Please vote, and post a response if there are any other topics you really feel need to be prohibited...I can't think of any at the moment myself.

Political discussions only if they are directly related to land use and motorcycle regulation.

Presidential election politics, abortion, guns (sad but true), religion, etc. have nothing to do with dual sporting.

I voted no on both. This is a forum board for discussions and personally I don't mind hearing other peoples "opinions" and It does give you an idea of the person you may be riding with one day. If you don't want to be involved in the discussion it is easy to avoid, you don't have to click on the topic.

I did not see what is - not allowed in the open discussion. So even tho I hate the political stuff. I just pass it by.If we ban it what's the point of having a open discussion.

I changed my mind...if people want to discuss this stuff, maybe they should be able to, but we should ask that they put in the title....POLITICAL DISCUSSION or RELIGIOUS, etc. This way if people want to stay away from it, they can.

Also, as someone else mentioned, we can have a separate forum for those type of topics only.

But first, let's see where the POLL goes.

One thing I noticed about these polls, is people will make a comment, but sometimes they don't VOTE in the POLL. Please VOTE....thanks !

Also, another answer option added to POLL.

Thanks !

The problem is that a civil political discussion can quickly devolve into flame baiting. The latest example was started and promoted by the OP.

I like the idea of a seperate area for off-off-topic stuff. I agree with Tree, it does give an insight into what other people's opinions are.

It won't change who I ride with (I will ride with anyone), because all of us should be on this board because of our love for riding. We all come from different backgrounds and have different ideas and values. Maybe we could even learn something from each other!

I was unclear exactly on option 3, I did vote. Freedom of expression is important so is the freedom to click on it or not. We can always rein someone in, like we do for flaming.

this...

as for anybody thinking they can "judge" what a person is like (as a riding partner)based on political or religious views, i totally disagree

+2. I really didn't want to get involved with this whole topic/issue but I think Jim brings up a good point and I am in agreement. Something like ADV's "Basement" where the subforum is clearly marked to contain "hot button" topics might be a good idea. I'd really prefer not to have the main forums turn into heated political or religious debates and I think having a "basement" type subforum (at the bottom of the page) might help clean up the main forums.

I voted Yes to 1 and 2 (to prohibit these "hot" topics from the main forums) but I also said Yes to 3 so that if somebody wants to "open that can of worms" they can do so over there.

I like SDAR. I like that its local, I like that it promotes responsible riding and I like that I actually ride with forum members. I think because of these things, any "basement" debates will remain more civil than ADV because well, we'll all see each other on the trail. Thanks Randy and Uncle Cameron for all the behind the scenes work you guys do, Ride On!

I appreciate and understand the intentions for keeping this a forum regarding adventure riding, after all, the name of the site is SDAR, and we are all here because we LOVE riding and hanging with fellow riders (regardless of their personal beliefs)... I, personally, am not opposed to a separate SDAR password protected forum, for controversial topics such as news, religion or whether or not you prefer Ford over Chevy LOL - keep it clean, polite, and respectful of others. ;)

Plus a pswd protected forum would clean things up a bit for the public view and possible new members. The sooner the better :smile_anim:

I say let it roll Randy ! I do like the idea of a Separate forum...... Like a God , Guns and Politics kind of thing. Enough former military and guys that got into Dual Sport because of the love of combining motorcycles and backpacking, hunting, and camping that sometimes the conversation goes into the outdoors, fishing, hunting and guns. A tremendous amount of passion right now out there because many people feel that this election is more than just a vote for a president, but for the soul of this country. We all have friends on both side of the aisle, we should keep it civil. This does give some serious insight on how guys think and after all I would still stop and help someone injured on the trail even if they are a Dirt Bag Liberal !! whistle.gif

I support and encourage civil and rational discussions with people for whom I have respect. I learn from other well-reasoned and thoughtful arguments, and fully support their discussion in a separate forum.

As is always the case, new members and lurkers will join our group if they feel welcomed and encouraged. Those same folks will leave, in a heartbeat, if the discussion becomes clearly irrational, aggressive, nasty and childish.

Just like sharing meals, I am very particular about the people with whom I ride. I don't share the idea that "it's just riding". If that were the case, we wouldn't spend any time on a club website. I enjoy the company of many members with whom I share values, even if our opinions differ. I'm sure there are many members that won't ride with me- that's fine. Probably because I'm too fast and graceful and make them feel bad.

Yes, a separate forum, yes, password protect it so the crazies don't scare off new, quality members.

p

PS "Freedom of Speech"or "censorship" is irrelevant here- this site is moderated and controlled by those that own it. Nobody is stopping you from going down to the local town square and spewing forth all the nastiness one's paranoid brain can dream up. This is a community, and we can decide what we can accept here- I'm confident (hopeful?) nobody would allow child porn or slasher pics here- same thing. Feel free to get your own site and discuss anything you like. But here, it's up to Randy.

I'm for the freedom of expression......

we live in a state that is WAAAAAY OVER REGULATED already......sure would hate to see SDAR add to the regulations

We are all different, but that can be what makes life and discussions interesting and enlightening...

some people just want to fight...whether about what motorcycle RULES....or what oil to run.....so of course politics and religion will be controversial....

I'm conservative both politically and religiously, but some of my dearest friends don't at all agree with my philosophies, yet we love each other and share many great times together.....
