Hot weather riding?

Recommended Posts

Is there anyplace at legal I can ride my dual sport near San Diego in the summer that  isn't way hot?

I'm not an early riser, so the 6am ride thing doesn't happen for me. Typically I just hang up my gear until late fall.

But are there any legal dirt rides of interest at altitude maybe? Something near Mt Laguna or Palomar? Heck, I might just go do some dirt roads up there...

Palomar Divide or Otay Mtn/Sycamore Canyon/Pink gate area. Still hot, but not as hot as McCain etc.

Santa Ysabel/ Black Canyon, Mesa Grande to 76. Gliderport to Anza all dirt. South on High Point/ Palomar Divide from Aguanga. Section between Warner Springs and Anza can get pretty rough (more fun) for a few days after a good thunderstorm. Rare for this route to be too hot; usually ride it late afternoon. 4 hr loop. Depending on the day, Jasper/ Culp/ Grapevine often OK... if you don't want to go all the way to Big Bear.

Big Bear is really the closest place that is cooler than anything in SD county.

I love to comment on the hot weather riding discussion. We ride enduro all year round. Wear light colors (helmet as well), use vented/mesh type gear, add a wetted cooler neck collar to your kit, carry lots of water or electrolytic drink with you (I use the 3L USWE pack). Sometimes I wear my KLIM cooler undergear jersey wetted. Normally I go bare under my Fly Racing chest guard with all the attachments.  Lightest protective gear as well, minimize weight and even for cooler weather allow for easy movement, don't be dressed for a jousting tournament. enjoy the heat! I have depended on Moose Sahara gear for years but lately due to a special deal and the quality of their product, I am super happy with FXR super lite well vented gear. It's like racing silk!
