Unfortunately before I could get anything done to this trailer, my 525 started knocking and bogging.

So, as projects and priorities go, the first step in trailer rehab is fixing my KTM

Oil filters and screen don't look great... I think that's the forbidden glitter I've read so much about

ooo that is gonna be expensive, might be worth looking for a new motor that runs vs full rebuild, if you dig into it make sure to check for crankshaft spreading.

Damn that's too bad. Hours/miles?

Dave Hopkins rebuilt my 07' 450 and i think there might be only one more doing RFS rebuilds. I loved my 525 and love my 450 but it would be tough deciding to rebuild them cost wise.

Give the roller to Tom and tell him to make it electric as a project.

I have a GSXR1000 engine sitting here just looking for a home!

Yeah, it might be cheaper to find a non plated donor bike?  Then you could swap the engine in and have lots of spares or sell off the rest to recoup some of the cost.

Just in case (I'm not associated), this shop is really talked about on KTMTalk for RFS engines.

Can you make a BMW 1150 motor work? I have a angel grinder and stick welder.

There’s a 2003 on FB marketplace for $1500 right now with $800 back fees.  Would make a good donor possibly?

for info look into replacing those paper filters with a micro stainless steel mesh filters. They are super durable and reusable after solvent cleaning.

example

PC RACING STAINLESS ULTRA OIL FILTER – Taco Moto Co.

used for years on all my 4 strokes for racing and trails. (PS all our aircraft filters (both Hyd and fuel sys) are this type.

Thanks for the link. Looks like they have a connecing rod kit for $180 and will rebuild my crank for $110. I also like that they're close by (LA). If I can get this bike going again for less than $500 I'll be stoked.

I'd love to get the engine completely gone through by a professional shop that knows the rfs, but I cannot justify dropping $2500-4k on this bike. I thought about buying a used cheap rfs as a donor, but then I'm taking another gamble on a 20 year old bike which could be on it's last legs

Ya'll are crazy with the motor swap ideas. The 525 is already more power than I'll ever need.

These are cool. I'll pick them up when we're all fixed up.

I only get one day every 2 weeks if I'm lucky to myself. I have to decide which project to work on or go riding, so this might be a slow build. But I plan on rebuilding the bike myself.

crank feels great. Piston got some wear, maybe ate some small metal pieces, but looks surprisingly nice. I've got a wosner piston on the way. And some ebay pre-owned rockers and cam and new gaskets too. I'll clean the bottom end out as well as I can, but won't be split the cases.

Valves look fantastic. I'm thinking/hoping this bike was recently rebuilt with that new crank, piston, and valves. Also, the internet says this rocker bearing failure is uncommon on RFS bikes. Do ya'll think I should replace the bearings on the pre-owned rockers? Or only replace them if they feel crunchy or loose?

I know someone else that had the same thing happen.  Maybe it’s not common, but you’re not the only one that’s been down that road.

you have it this far apart, only makes sense to replace what you can that is in your budget to give it the best change at longevity if you intend to keep it.

Now about that trailer........
