Just Got This Dropped Off to Me

Nice, eh ? Demo TE449 to use for a couple weeks at least. Taking it on the Dualies Dualsport ride this weekend.

Thanks to Paul at GP Motorcycles and Jeff Konicke (in photo) at Husqvarna for making this happen ! :good:

So where is the big improvement over my 79 Husky 390?

240lbs

Dual Ohlins Piggy Back shocks.

Plenty of fuel in the Vesco Desert tank.

Real leather Malcolm Smith tool bag.

Malcolm Smith skid plate.

No coolant to leak.

Original equipment Trelleborg front tire.

No compression release so it keeps you fit kick starting it.

32 years after it was made it will still give you a memorable ride.

(the fuel thing is tough on the husky's...though jonathan did pretty well at bar 10 with his new 450.....always nice to travel with "tanker" eiders too !)

there is a website that does comparisons, side by side of different bikes... it gives a good look at the numbers, without getting in to some of the primary reasons we ride bikes... feel, sound, fun, etc. but it DOES compare weight, height, HP, suspension travel, fuel capacity

So; I entered the 449, and the data came up... some nice numbers

but the database does not go back to 1979... I think my computer let out a chuckle... I called the IT department, and they said " that was before computers... is this work related?"

Don- I love busting your chops... mainly just because I'm a jerk

BUT: I really DO want to ride it some day... when I was riding in the 70s, I was just a kid, and suspension was an afterthought... frames and brakes too... what they DID do well then was motors. the motors seemed at least as good as most motorcycles today- I'm sure emissions had something to do with it, but I rode a CR500 years ago, and was AMAZED at the brutal power of that bike...

By comparison, my "modern bikes" seem to have tamer engines, but I LIKE tall seat heights... I LOVE 12 inches of suspension...I love a frame that I can;'t feel flexing (XT600 I had scared the bejeesus out of me with it's frame flex and fork flex)... I like hydraulic brakes that stop me well all day, and don't heat up or fade

but- for $905 vs. $7399... maybe I could relax my standards a little

The 79 Husky was one of the most expensive bikes of its day. It cost almost three times what my 79 Honda XL cost at the time. I still have both bikes. But did you notice my 2010 Green Sticker on the left front fork? How many bikes made today do you think will be sporting one 30 years from now?

Also, in 1979 I did not have:

a computer

a GPS

a calculator costing less than $200

a cell phone

a telephone answering machine

a CD player

a Sony Walkman audio casette player

a VCR

a Remote Control for my TV

a Cable TV Outlet in my house

I did have:

a slide rule

a 1978 Dodge Challenger with an 8 Track Player

a TV antennae on my roof

a 10' long bamboo pole I held between my toes for changing one of the 3 TV channels.

a Typewriter with an erasure and white out.

a chalk holder for writing on the blackboard when I lectured in my classes.

a 78 Honda XL350

a 78 Husky 390
