  1. Hey Big Mike, is everything going ok?  I am not sure I can make it out to the ride yet due to other obligations, but thought I would check-in to see how things are going.  Do you have enough helpers/volunteers for tomorrow? Are you scrambling to get things done today that I could help with down in the El Cajon area?  All the best.  John

  2. Hey Ken, You likely know I wasn't really joking about seriously considering a DR.  When you have a moment, could you please share your thoughts about Tim's bike I looked at Goofy's DR.  Looks a bit beat up, but maybe it has some pieces and parts that make it worthy if he gives a good deal....  Or, If you see one farkled on ADV or local that you know has been treated well, let me know.  I know my bike camping would be a challenge on either my DRZ or vstrom given where I really want to go, and you know I don't need to go fast, just steady and sure.  Chat soon.

  3. Happy Birthday Uncle!  John

  4. Hey goofy, I could use stands as the old tree stump I use is a bit unbalanced :)   But likely only if you are near by my house in La mesa El Cajon area.  Let me know.  Hope all is well. John

  5. Hey Goofy Footer, John here.  Ken (trophy Hunter) and I often chat about DR's (not DRZ) for longer camping trips.  My vstrom doesn't do offroad too well, and not yet ready to pull the plug for BMW, but Ken said you may have something to sell soon - possibly a bike.  I noticed that you are cleaning house, and as one reader made note, I hope you are well , and all things are going in a positive direction for you.  Let me know if you need to sell a bike, or if you are just gonna drop it on the market, either for me or one of my friends trying to get into the sport.  Cheers.

  6. Hey, I have seen a few hints about you owning a DR, like your old one?  have you posted pics?  If not, send me one or post one so I can be more jealous  - haha.   Hope all is well. John

Thanks.  If you can, document what you are doing so I can follow suit someday, unless......  I just go big with a f800, or go with the KTM 530, or simply keep riding my drz, as it did great on the BDR, but packing the drz for overnights is just a little too much for the drz to have comfortable fun.  Send a pic my way sometime. All the best!

  7. Hey Bob, John here.  If you have anytime to chat on the phone today about gpsmap78, basecamp, and following routes or tracks.... or in the next few days.... let me know (You can text me instead of using SDAR if you have a moment, if not, I will try to cross paths with you later, hope to see you soon)  All the best.  619-994-4464

Thanks John, had a pleasant weekend with family.  As it should be....

Just got my MoskoMoto Reckless 40L pannier system, and am planning to hit the Anza, idyllwild and Big Bear areas a lot this summer for some moto camping.  I'd like to post up a big bike ride like last year to Santa Rosa Mtn. a little earlier than last year, like late Aug. or something.

Have a good 4th of July,

Thanks Bob, I chuckled when I recently saw a reference to a new packing system, so I assumed you were getting a pannier system, but wasn't that for the smaller Husky?  or are you outfitting your big bike for camping this time (Tiger?).  Try to get to Hatch Utah, not too far away, as you can enter beautiful jeep roads to the west of Bryce Canyon, and west to the ski resort (cooler temps). See ya on the rails some time soon.  Cheers.

  9. Hey Mikey, great stuff on the 5150 write up, thanks!   I don't want to derail the flow so I thought I would send you a message instead of posting on the thread.  Can you share with me the distance that you were at when you were unable to make radio communication? although you guys were apart, it certainly seemed that you could have still been in radio contact with each other since that is one of the purposes of group radio riding... were all of you on similar radios?

I will be riding some BDR Colorado in a few weeks and I was wondering about how far apart you were that you guys couldn't reach each others radios (Rugged RH-5R radios, 5 watt?).   I might restrict my co-riders to stop for others earlier if the range really isn't very far. You know....  with super dust, a group of 4 can get quite spread. Thanks again.  John

We were using Rugged RH-5R radios or the Chinese Baofeng UV-5R equivalent.  I personally have the Rugged version. I have the long distance antenna installed also.

For some reason, my radio would not receive beyond 1/4 mile and was even worse in mountainous terrain. I even moved my radio into my backpack (versus tankbag) and had the antenna poking up over my shoulder to max out reception.  Didn't help.

We ended up having to relay messages from front to back and vice versa. As long as everybody knows to relay, it worked fine. LB's radio had problems transmitting.  We often could not hear him. I am not sure if that was a mic issue or a transmit issue as it was intermittent.

I personally am going to upgrade to a better radio.  It was problematic the entire trip when we got spread out and was the primary reason we got separated/me lost. Had I known what was going on back down the line, I would have stayed put and probably should have anyway.

My recommendation is that you do some test rides, spread out, and see what your working range is.

Thanks, I bought one today during one of those 2 hr. discount sales. It is actually my second one even though I havent used the first one yet as I wanted my gal to have one. I also did it so I could use the helmet kits from both in both of my helmets, dirt and road. And she could use the other radio in the truck or when we long distance hike.  Bummer to hear that it didn't work well as my earlier research and a few threads on SDAR make reference to it being a good set-up and able ito transmit a couple miles clearly. Please send info my way as you discover the hows and whys to your limited distance issue.  Glad you guys had a wild, yet safe outing, way to go.  All the best. John

  10. Good morning, John here. Just wondering if you ever hang in the san diego area and ever invite folks (or individuals) to cross paths with you in person to either purchase your product or teach them how to best use it (GPS and computer connectedness).  My first bribe - need a brew or a burger?  haha. If not, maybe you know a few of the SDAR folks that wouldn't mind guiding a newbie. Cheers.

I live in PB and I've got 10 acres of prime desert sand in Ocotillo Wells. I've met with a few map customers and SDAR members for rides. Within the next few weeks I'm going to start working on a series of videos to explain ways to use the map and how to read it. There are a lot of subjective decisions when I make the map and it would be helpful for users to understand the some of the reasoning behind it.

OK, thanks, I guess you are getting ready for the hot season. If you ever have any interest in showing a newbie things to consider, please let me know. I would buy the product, install on a macbook air, merge with Garmn Base Camp I think, and use on a Gpsmap 78 hand held unit.  All the best.  John

  11. Oh, we communicated best at this email   jhulzee@cox.net   or 619-994-4464 text or call.  Thanks

  12. Hey George, John here.  About a year plus ago, you went through my new to me drz (took off some lowering apparatus) and adjusted.  You said to get it back to you for a relook.  When might be a good time?  actually, for 2 drz's.  Thanks.  John

  13. Hey Brian, John here, from Windmill View.  I have been meaning to ask you to drop by sometime when headed to your dads for a couple reasons....  Now, another, the 2 bike Joe Hauler.  I will try to drop by to see it soon, or if you bring it to your dads....  or drop it by since you have dropped a tank bag over my fence before :)  . I picked up a Dodge Ram and have taken the camper from my 150 and put it onto the 2500.  You will likely have seen the trailers I use out back around my sideyard.  Also, I have a ham radio, and need a few pointers on how to best install pieces and parts... and also, have been thinking about buying a CZ79?  hmmm, maybe the wrong model name, but a 9 mm handgun (is it a decent 9mm?)  catch ya later. Thanks.
