In the market (soon) for a new dirtbike

Recommended Posts

Yeah, you and your pornographic memory there bikeslut...

Totally offtopic, but remember the other day you said you've never seen anyone you felt rode brazenly fast? Perhaps you meant within our group, but have you heard of a rider on youtube called ghostrider? That guy is PSYCHO to say the least. 315 KMPH Wheelie through traffic on a hyabusa turbo with 500hp...

Little bit of a hijack, but my original point, I THINK, was that SDAR guys ride within their limits... I haven't seen any cocky, stupid people from this club... fast, yes... but not even close to out of control.

Not to say some people don't crash B) cuz they do, but not because they were out of control... they're dirtbikes... stuff happens, y'know?

Hate to jump on the debate here, but have you tried both? I say borrow as many different bikes from people and see which one you like best.

I just rode CRF450X on Saturday..4 stroke..what a blast.

Then I rode my DRZ which is about twice as heavy and did technical trails...I loved it.

On Sunday my neighbor and I went to OW and I tried his 2 stroke yamaha 250..can't recall model - it was great...then I saw him LIFT it up on a bike stand...with his two hands..not roll, but LIFT..my jaw dropped.

All that being said I now probably have a good idea what is out there and can make a decision. If you are just guessing if this is okay or if that one is better you are wasting time

Ride them then decide. Just my 2 cents.

You can borrow my DRZ anytime you want (with the exception of Primm :D).

YZ400f? Any opinions? I've heard nothing but good things about it, and I found one for a grand!

How much heavier does it feel compared to a 250 f or 2009 450 f?

I'm trying to buy it, but no response from the seller...

99 400F, be careful as a top end job on a 4 stroke can run$2500. Same top end on a 2 stroke about $3-400.

So? Just maintain it.

Wil- I'm guessing his point is that the 400 is 10 years old...you can't maintain a bike in somebody elses possession

People are trying to help...

the 250f feels like a bicycle compared to the 400 all rev. the bottom end on the 400 is crazy as for the 09 i have no idea never worked on one. but my 99 400 has more bottom the the 06crf 450 but less top end and over rev. my xr is great all around ds. tractor power lighter than a 650. and i just did my top end for 200 bucks with valve job. the newer the bike the more it will cost to rebuild. my 06 yfz450 $2800 to rebuild!!!!!

I've got a 99 WR400F, there are a few of them in this group of crazies. I hate this bike, it always starts and rarely gives me issues. How am I supposed to get a new bike when this one keeps going? :)

Do some research, the early Yamaha four strokes are some of the most reliable ones made. There are some weak links, the carb slide likes to disintegrate and get ingested into the engine causing problems. The upper bearing on the rod is a bit small, they upgraded it on the 426 but I haven't heard many people have an issue with it on a 400. They are kind of top heavy compared to newer 450 four strokes, but not bad in my opinion. An auto-decompression cam will make it a piece of cake to start, although they are easy to start once you get the "routine" down.

What's the asking price? Top end is not going to cost $2500. You can get a piston and cylider kit with 420cc big bore for $450, head work may be more or less.

BS, Ohhhh, Ok. I thought they were still trying to convert me to a 2-stroke....Sorry!

Yeah, I've been doing a lot of research on it, and the only problems I've found is that the valving makes it harder to start, like you were saying, the bearings had to be upgraded in the 426. It's a first generation bike so it's going to have more problems than the 8th anf 9th generation...

Has no engine braking from what I've read so far, due to a short flywheel and similar compression ratio to a YZ250.

Tntmo, thanks for the heads up, 450$ is a great price for a 're-build' Asking price on this bike is 1,000. Owner finally called me back, said it won't start because it sat for 8 weeks. But hey, if it has compression, It's my gain, I play the whole, oh well maybe you should sell it cheaper because it won't start...and then take it home, clean out the carb+filters and have it running on the first kick in an hour (how I got my 650 for so cheap :) )

Thanks for the input guys, I've been watching CL for quite awhile...Nothing has been close to this cheap. It is an older bike, so I called yamaha, and they still have PLENTY of stock replacement parts for it.

Don't know who would say that, Yamaha 400's have plenty of engine braking. If you could pick it up for $600-$700 it would be a good deal. Worst case, part it out and break even. The carb can be complicated, lots of people try to clean them out and end up taking them back out to clean again. If you do get it take your time and do it right the first time.

Here's a runner for $999 in Vista.

yeah, that's the bike I was talking about. I think it'd be funny to buy it with 9 100$ bills and 99 ones....

Well thats good to hear, I love engine braking, very helpful on technical DHs...

Wil, I say go for it. It sounds like you might get a good deal. Keep us all up to date if you get it on what needed to get it running and what not. If you can do the work that is great, I think the $450 price is not for a rebuild but maybe just the parts. Good Luck.

My roommate has a '99 WR400 that we picked up for cheap. Went through the carb and we still have some jetting issues, but even without it being spot on, I really like the pull of the engine and the balance of the bike. All around it's a very fun bike.

Enjoy

Got a hold of the owner on the phone, he is a moron. Said he doesn't have a title, but his dad applied for one, and he'd sell it with a bill of sale...He also left a few details about the bike not being registered, broken wheels...

Well, It's back to looking! Will someone post/PM me if they find a 250f, 250r (two stroke), 450, 426, 200, 300 for sale under 1200...

Thanks.

Quick question, when did four strokes start getting red stickers? Is an 05 RM-Z 250 going to be red or green?

All the MX models whether they are 2 or 4 stroke 2003 and later are red sticker.
