tvscum 43 Posted March 26, 2014 KTM rider tried to walk his dirt bike over the train tracks this morning behind the Toys R Us at 1240 W. Morena Blvd. Train didn't stop and totalled the bike. Rider ran away before the cops got there. Trying to figure out where this guy was trying to end up. Not a lot of dirt track around there. What kind of KTM is that? Anybody we know? Riggerdan 147 Posted March 26, 2014 KTM rider tried to walk his dirt bike over the train tracks this morning….. I think that was the first mistake... don't know the area well maybe it was stolen? running away does not seem like a responsible reaction
Covered in Dust 163 Posted March 26, 2014 Well it looks to be a 05 or 06 450 or 525 with a Baja baja Designs front light and a IMS gas tank. I wonder if it was stolen. CiD
paulmbowers 236 Posted March 26, 2014 Looks like a pre-04 RFS bike, maybe a 520 or 450.

Dan Diego 40 Posted March 26, 2014 Normally, I'd pick the KTM in that match-up. Guess sometimes the train wins. But let's see a train compete in the Dakar...
paulmbowers 236 Posted March 26, 2014 They can carry a lot, but trains really suck in the deep sand.Sorta like my 990.
Covered in Dust 163 Posted March 26, 2014 Paul is right on the year, I thought it had a single header pipe but see the dual in the new picture which makes it an older model. CiD

Vacman 0 Posted March 26, 2014 It's still in better shape than PMB's old KTM. This wounds me so. Like a knife to my heart. Or, more specifically, VacMan's heart. Don't worry I'm giving it a new lease on life shortly. Waiting on the final pieces and then it will be like a phoenix rising from the ashes of long-term neglect! And then I'm selling it before the next problems pop up. On topic: Bike is almost certainly stolen. Walking it over tracks and then running away once it's destroyed? Bummer for the owner. Part of the issue with his difficulty rolling it had to be the fact that the rear wheel was missing...

Kevin Merlo 0 Posted March 27, 2014 I have some first-hand knowledge of this one...a shame it's a KTM! It was one of our Coaster trains that hit the bike this morning at about 6:40 am. I have the forward facing video from the locomotive. The thing was stuck and the guy was pushing on it until the last minute then jumped out of the way. It sure sounds like a stolen bike...sad. I'll post a still picture from the locomotive for you guys to see tomorrow!

Kevin Merlo 0 Posted March 27, 2014 I don't want to release the video because we have to maintain control of that, but here's a still photo from just before impact. The bike wasn't stolen, and I understand the guy was warned in the past about riding on railroad property.
Riggerdan 147 Posted March 27, 2014 Still strange order of events…? did he not see the train coming? how do you ride on RR tracks and not be able to get across them Maybe he was stuck and or recovering from a fall I'm sure he will think twice before doing that again? If he was warned then they know who he is…... Just curious what the charges are if he was caught? Trespassing? Reckless endangerment?
paulmbowers 236 Posted March 27, 2014 The railroads take a very narrow view of tresspassing on their right-of-way, and they should. Knuckleheads do this stuff all the time.MrsBowers once had Operation Lifesaver as a client (MANY years ago) and her job was to teach kids not to cross when the light are flashing, the arms are down and the bells are ringing.Because that's not enough for some people to know a train might be coming. It's worth mentioning that if the bike became lodged in the points of the switch, and the train was going toward the points of the switch, it could have derailed a train with a bunch of people in it. You may remember the guy in LA that parked his car on the tracks in front of a Metrolink train intending to commit suicide. He chickened out at the last minute, but the vehicle wedged under the train causing a nasty derailment that resulted in several fatalities. He was charged with murder as a result of those fatalities. There's another post on the AdvRider site about exploring the train tracks in Carrizo gorge...really a bad idea. I don't want to preach, but please keep you, your friends and family, and your bikes safe and just stay away from the tracks. Thanks,
