JohnnyAirtime 2 Posted January 11, 2011 .... you couldn't pay me enough http://www.liveleak....80365%26embed=1 I thought I had it and was about to apply for such work. Just past minute 4:00... I realized, I'd never even think about it. But at minute 4:30, it confirmed any thoughts of a job opportunity. And at minute 6:52... the "tricky" part, I definitely quit thinking I was manly and not scared of heights. I wonder how much it sways!!

dirt dame 561 Posted January 12, 2011 Yow! Some jobs aren't worth it, no matter what they pay. that looked like a pretty young pair of arms there. I bet there aren't very many middle aged climbers or any old climbers doing that job.

SDlineman 0 Posted January 12, 2011 I've been up towers maybe 200 ft. but nothing like that. It wouldn't scare me, but I don't think I've got the endurance to make it.

I'm not pole certified, but worked with AT&T for 8yrs as a PBX technician and had world of respect for those up high. I did climb a hundred something tower in Otay, off of a Sony building.... putting up a point to point antenna (to cross into Baja). ... crazy that video doesn't "get ya" scared. Does me!!! Zenosan 2 Posted January 12, 2011 WOW----got it. Not my kind of work. Hope they pay those guys a lot. I would worry about getting run over by a passing jet liner.

If you can work 100 feet in the air, you can do the same at 1500 feet. You've probably got about the same chance of surviving a fall from either height. I'm not saying I wouldn't a little nervous, but fear wouldn't keep me from climbing it and getting my work done.

PastaPilot 17 Posted January 12, 2011 I saw that a few years ago. It gave me the willies too. While in the Navy I used to climb to the top the ships mast to service the anemomoeters. It was a daunting task but I did look farward to it. It may not have been as high, only a 160 some feet from the water, but I bet the top of a ship mast swayed more than those antennas. The Navy had all kinds of safety policies that had to be met before we could climb the mast. Winds and waves had to be below a certain amount and we HAD to use safety lines for climbing. I tell ya getting up there on the top of a swaying mast, I didn't mind them one bit. Oh and Johnny, you won't have to worry about climbing a 1700' antenna. I am 95% certain there aren't any in California. Most of the transmission towers here are strategically placed on mountain tops. The taller ones that I know of in the central velley are only five or six hundred feet.
ADV Bum 205 Posted January 12, 2011 Climbing the tower would be exhausting. Not that bad as you have the safety, but still a unnerving. Now the "Free climb", your just out of your mind. I cannot believe they dont have a vertical pole to allow the safety line to slide up.
hoss314 0 Posted January 12, 2011 My hands and feet were pouring sweat! good thing the time clock wasn't at the top! Long climb to punch in.... If I was crazy enough to do that....I would parachute down
dirt dame 561 Posted January 12, 2011 If I was crazy enough to do that....I would parachute down It almost seems like parachuting down would be a relief after making that climb up.

Papa Smurf 0 Posted January 12, 2011 I've done rapelling and fast roping up to 90' out of helo's that was scaring and high enough for me. I'm scared of heights, so I would not even think about a job like that. I did what I had to do in the Marines, some of that stuff was a part of the job, not the actual job. I don't think I would take a job that required me to climb more than ten feet every day.

If I was crazy enough to do that....I would parachute down Although they are the tallest buildings in the world, transmission towers are not freestanding structures. They use cables called guy wires to keep them standing upright. The guy wires extend outward to keep the towers standing. B.A.S.E. jumpers love to jump from them but it is easily the most dangerous jump you can do as it is very easy to get tangled in the cables. It is also very easy to snag an airplane wing in them.
