Crawdaddy Mojave Rd. Ride

Recommended Posts

Haven't really given much thought to lodging locations.......open to suggestion.......somewhere in Barstow on Friday night and I was thinking we'd stay in Laughlin on Sat night (that's what originally prompted this ride......Randy posted a link to a motel in Laughlin offering "special" rates.....I'll call them).......once we have locations set everyone can call in to make their own reservations (pair up to shave costs)

Some rates in Barstow for 11/19:

Motel 6 $38

Days Inn $50

EconoLodge $57

Rodeway Inn $62

I'm off that entire week...sounds like I need to come up with something big bike 'ish' to follow that.

Usually it's the Ramada. Tripadvisor has it at $76 with advance purchase. It's decent, stayed there a couple times. The big advantage is its large dirt parking lot on the property.

If you're feeling lucky, try the Mexican place directly across the street. Ate there once, it was great- I won. Last time, however on the x15, I lost big time, started the ride the next day completely sleep deprived and dehydrated after spending much of the night in the bathroom.

So you gotta ask yourself- are you feeling lucky?coolio.gif

I emailed the Edgewater about the $39 rate for Sat in Laughlin.......but the "special" was conditioned on 10 rooms "double occupancy"......we probably won't have enough riders to pull that off......I'll see what I can work out with them......many of us would have no problem getting our own rooms for that rate which is what I put in the e-mail......

I'd encourage anyone thinking about riding the Mojave Rd. to buy "The Mojave Rd. Guide" by Dennis Casebier......the GPS tracks will contain several waypoints along the Mojave Rd. marking points of interest mentioned in the book.....we'll be blowing by most fairly quickly (long riding day at ~180 miles) but reading the book will still make the experience more meaningful......

You can buy it here: http://www.desertusa.com/web_cart/db/pages/5094.html

FYI - I'll also have an easy way from Barstow to Baker for anyone interested in bypassing the sand in the Mojave River Basin/water crossing in Afton Canyon in either direction......total daily mileage is similar but it's an easier ride (powerline north of 15) and you still get to see/ride the Mojave Rd. between Kelbaker Road and U.S. 95 (day one).....day two will also include the eastern section of Mojave Rd. between Needles Hwy and U.S. 95.

FYI(2) - As stated above, these will be two BIG mileage riding days regardless of path (~180 miles?) .......and the 8 miles of whoops between Marl Springs and Kelso Rd. will be part of the mix both days......no sweep riders/truck......long desolate ride.......so please do a self assessment and make sure your stamina/skill level/bike is up to the task........

Chris, what's the longest distance between gas? I'd only trust the Husky for about 110 miles. And where are you planning to stay Friday night in Barstow?

I fiddled with some tracks during the lunch hour......longest stretch between gas stops is between Baker and Laughlin (day 1).....Laughlin and Rasor Rd. (day 2).......plan on ~115 minimum or slightly more if you throw in a round trip to the Lava Tubes (~8.5 mile round trip) or a quick run over to Fort Piute (4 mile round trip) on either day.......hard to trim it any lower.....bring a bottle or, better yet, tell Wayno to carry it :coolio::lol:

We'll be heading north on Rasor Rd. and bypassing Soda Dry Lake on day 1 (gas in Baker)......once you leave Baker there will be ~14 miles of pavement via Kelbaker Rd. down to Mojave Rd.(running the bypass on day 1 because I’m not sure the path across the dry lake will even be open......if not, you’ll also travel this path on the way back......if it is open I have a track for you to ride across the lake on day 2 and you’ll gas up at Rasor Rd. rather than Baker)......the paved stretches on Yermo Rd./Kelbaker Rd. oughta help stretch your fuel range a bit if you’re easy on the throttle......likewise, we'll be running north a few miles on 95 and downhill/east about ~7 miles on 163 leading into Laughlin...... so that oughta help stretch your range a bit too ;)

What is the degree of difficulty on this ride?

Mostly big bike style ride?

Chris --does the BLM close the trail ( when it is wet ) on the dry lake or do you have to figure it out for yourself ?

I would rate the ride as intermediate and above simply because we'll be covering ~350-400 miles in two days, lot's of sand, and at least one significant water crossing......that said, big bikes/new riders won't have too much difficulty if they opt to take the easy way between Barstow and Baker........I haven't ridden down in Manx Wash/Mojave river basin in ~5 years(?) but I don't remember it being too tough or the water crossing being too deep......

I think I'll ride my Adventure bike.........it goes ANYWHERE

I know for a fact there's a posted sign indicating open or closed by Kelbaker Rd. (east end of lake) .......and that's the only direction you'll be approaching it from since the first day of the ride bypasses the lake......

EDIT - Dates are now SET - 11/20-21 - Please post up if you're "in" by mid Oct so we have a head

count for motel reservations on Friday/Sat....

So Chris, should we be booking rooms now or are you trying to get some code or discount offer? I'm just wondering when and where I should be booking.

We're all set for Laughlin.......just waiting on the contract from the Edgewater.......once I get the contract they'll assign a SDAR code for everyone to call in against.......all we have to do is book 10 rooms (minimum) to get the $39 rate on Sat night the 20th (they were willing to let go of the double occupancy requirement)......we'll easily hit that as I'd imagine a lot of folks may opt for a single room at that rate.....

I requested the Sedona Tower at the Edgewater (based on recommendation.....nicer joint than CO. Belle)........I also requested coned off/close parking for ~20 bikes......we'll see...

I'll look over the input on Barstow, contact hotels, see what sorta deal I can swing, and let everyone know....

Just an FYI - I'm a +1. Turns out my pitcrew will be coming along also (I think he was afraid I would get left out there in the middle of nowhere - I am very directionally challenged  ) Shouldn't affect any room reservations, though....

Ok, with regards to Barstow, I have us set up Friday night 11/19 at the Motel 6......I went with this location because it's literally right on the exit road out of town (North Yucca Avenue) and they have no problem with trucks being left in their parking lot until Sunday afternoon.

Not swanky by any means but that's OK (with me) :dead: .......I'm just looking for a bed/shower.......I'll send out GPS Tracks beforehand.......feel free to stay elsewhere/leave at your leisure, but this will be ground zero on Sat morning......

"I'LL" BE RIDING AWAY FROM THE MOTEL 6 PARKING LOT AT 7AM ON SATURDAY THE 20th

Confirmation code is 128241 when you call in with your VISA # - rate is $34.19 + tax per room.....please call in ASAP......I spoke with "Vern"......told him we'd have a minimum of 8 rooms.....I already booked a room......pair up or just book your own room (at ~$38/room in both Barstow and Laughlin you may want to just get your own room each night to ensure a good night's sleep ;) )

Motel 6-Barstow

150 N Yucca Ave

Barstow, CA 92311

760-256-1752

Directions

15 to E. Main Street (left)

E. Main Street to N. Yucca Ave. (right)

I'll post up the details on Laughlin as soon as I have the contract/confirmation code

Oh- do you think we can book a massage at the Motel 6 in advance, and will there be a grope rate?

I will be filled with knowlije from Gary's motoventures training the weekend before, so I can make the ride. I have a little trailer that I can truck the DRZ up on and ride the bike from there to there. DirtDiva is about as fast as I wanna be, so I'll follow her and PCrew,

See you there!

Laughlin Lodging:

Edgewater Hotel and Casino

2020 S Casino Dr

Laughlin, NV 89029

1 800 677 4837

Just sent back the signed contract for the Edgewater Casino.....please call in promptly because we need to have 10 rooms booked (minimum) by 11/7 ........any unbooked rooms will be dropped on 11/7 and any rooms booked after 11/7 will be charged at the “regular hotel prevailing rate” ......which is probably pretty high on a Saturday.......

Ask for booking against "SD Adventure Riders Group" :good::friends::drinks: ........ rate is $39/room + tax........includes breakfast buffet on Sunday (not sure what time that starts.....hopefully it's some 24hr Casino thing because you'll want to get an early start on Sunday too since you’ll have a long ride followed by a long drive back to SD.......unless you opt to stay at the Motel 6 in Barstow again......I'm sure they'll have rooms so you can delay that decision and see how you feel when you arrive in Barstow late Sunday afternoon ;) )

Any fence walkers that join the party after 11/7 will likely need to pay the prevailing rate and may not get a trip through the breakfast buffet thrown in the deal.....

So make a decision you slackers! :big_boss:

Remember, “If you’re not in.....you’re OUT!”......no whiners :crying_anim02:

Chris might want to chime in on this one also. I did some of it on my 950 a few years back. It was a long ride. Some of us bailed to the hyway and some stuck it out. Some parts are good and some sucked. But that is up to the rider---so give it a shot.
