sandiegoland 0 Posted July 17, 2008 I rode to the accident scene this morning just to check out the approach, visibility, etc… (I’ll comment more on that later perhaps) and saw some people sitting at the scene amongst some flowers and poster board mounted at the corner traffic pole. I came back around and stopped to sit with them for a moment. It was his daughter and several of her close friends. I could only tell her that I represented hundreds of fellow riders across the world who would give their deepest sympathies in person if they were anywhere within reach… and told her of the many connections he made with people far and near… The joy of motorcycling was just the tip of iceberg with what many of you would have shared in common with this man. A Navy veteran, an engineer, a professional photographer and videographer, just to name a few experiences in his life… and what a wonderful family he brought to be… he shared a close relationship with his children who will miss him dearly. SD_Frontier 0 Posted July 17, 2008 i hope to have quite a few riders out tomorrow night. if this is the case, we will need some help. police escorts maybe? does anyone have any contacts to make this happen?
graydog 0 Posted July 17, 2008 I heard about the incident on the way home from Corral Canyon today and put the pieces together when I read the post. Maybe we could put a marker on the Kernan that we sponser....if we do something as a riders group for the family or to honor him is it possible to mass e-mail all members to be sure those who don't read the forum often don't get left out? Maybe we could share the loss with some of the other forums that many of us read. carl

sandiegoland 0 Posted July 17, 2008 Some intersections have traffic lights for a reason. When a neighborhood feeder intersects with a higher speed mutli-lane main road you have to pretty much count on vehicles not darting out unexpectedly. This is the southbound approach dsherod took on Linda Vista. The speed limit is 35 MPH. Cars on eastbound Kramer waiting to go straight or turn left have a solid white line to stay behind that is to the right of the yellow crosswalk you see on the right. The landscaping and telecommunication cabinets block your view of any vehicles waiting, let alone approaching the intersection from Kramer: Do you see the car waiting on the right? There was one there when I took this photo! As you are about to cross the intersection you can finally see the solid white line which waiting vehicles must stay behind (solid white line on the right behind the yellow crosswalk: Conversely, this is the view the car on Kramer would have of approaching southbound traffic on Linda Vista (if they crept up cautiously): If a vehicle inches ahead over the line, they should be able to see more: Now see how cautiously this lady turning right is easing out? She even has the right of way, but still takes a pretty good look before turning right: It should be noted that this lady came back to talk with me briefly and offer her condolences to the family. She explained how she was hit and spun around at this intersection by someone running a red light from Linda Vista (opposite situation as with dsherod). I know these photos point out a visibility problem, but I hope that doesn't come across as excusing the driver in any way. In my viewpoint it only reinforces the absolute necessity that the traffic signal is obeyed. With traffic on Kramer essentially hidden from view, it is imperative that they wait for the correct signal to cross, even then (as that lady above pointed out to me) with extreme caution. KTMrad 513 Posted July 18, 2008 I have not been on the board for a few days, and just found out about this sad news when SanDiegoLand called me to let me know......thanks Craig. My sincere condolonces to Dennis's friends and family. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but will attend the Friday night ride for him. SD Frontier, if there's anything else I or we can do to help, please PM me. Godspeed Dennis
rwynant 0 Posted July 18, 2008 On behalf of the Sunday Social Club ( SSC ) please pass all our condolences on to Dennis' family. I'll be on the Friday Evening Ride, and I am sure 6 or 7 of the SSC would also be there, although they are on a road trip to the MotoGP in NorCal. I grew up in LV, and feel a connection to this for some reason.....My mom told me when I went by last evening that there had been a fatal bike accident there. Channel 10 online this morning did not have as much detail as the NBC article... Sad days Godspeed Dennis, R.I.P.

Memorial services are on Monday at 6pm at the Hilton La Jolla next to Torrey Pines. i dont have the full details, but everyone is invited. I visited with Dennis' family yesterday and they do intend to post the details and send out an official invite.

Aaron all, i cant express, in words, the flood of emotions i felt when i visited with Dennis' daughter and family yesterday. Desiree, his daughter, gave me a big hug and i could tell how grateful she was even though she uttered no words. i'm glad she will be able to meet some of you tonight. some of you have asked if there was anyway you could help. really, i dont know how to answer that. this memorial ride sure is a good way. i'd like to thank you all in advance (even those that cant make it...you will be with us in spirit). i'll bring a card for everyone to sign so that we can present it to the family. see y'all tonight Paul
