3-15-08 Desert riding

Recommended Posts

I am going to ride the desert this Saturday. I had such a good time on day 2 of the dash, that I have the urge to ride most of it again.

Meet at the Stagecoach Trails Campground across the road from the start of Pinion Mtn. trail.

Meet at 8:00 am ready to ride at 8:30. If it takes you longer than 1/2 hr. to get ready (like it does me) please show up earlier.

33 03'07.00" N 116 25' 28.00" W This is 4 miles South West of the intersection of highways S2/78.

Approx. 45 miles to first gas, 55 miles to 2nd gas from 1st. 45 miles last leg.

All skill levels welcome, our pace will be as fast as the slowest rider (no one left behind).

There will be some sand (deep ass sand. Just ask the DD stunt coordinator Sand Iegoland  ), and some rocky technical sections. The technical sections are few, and if you are not comfortable riding them your could have some one else take you bike through.

We will ride Truckhaven, see some wildflowers, do the squeeze and the drop.

There are plenty of bailout points along the way.

The ride can be done on a bigger adventure bike but must be an advanced rider to do it.

Post up, or PM me if you are going. :o Ken

I assume you are referring to Tarantula Wash? Sand is not sand. There are many types. This one is called [censored]

I don't have my extra 2" of risers in yet. It would be an another exercise in futility for me. Have to pass... :o

2" risers that should get your bars high enough to keep the clutch and brake levers up out of the sand while riding Tarantula Wash, because it looked pretty funny with just the mirrors sticking up out of the sand.:lol::lol: Ken

hey ken did you consider parking at one of the camp spots in blair valley? I think its close to pinyon mountain trail (the squeeze drop trail). I parked there a few months ago and did oriflame/rodriquiz.

I know I would rather drive to there and park rather than drive east of where we are riding then back east to get the truck then back again to go home.

I got new (to me) supercharged tacoma thats dying go dirtbiking.

That campground is called stagecoach off of S-2 , 50 yds away from the Pinyon dirt rd. Call them to see if you could park there. This campground is also where we staged Desert Dash 2.

+1... last time there, I parked at Blair... free parking, lightly patrolled by Rangers, and real close to Pinyon Mountain Road... plus you can run over and check out the petroglyphs/morteros near the South homestead...

There was a ride on Jan 24th starting Pinion Mnt. trail (Dirt Dame, Hondapilot, Bum) and I think these guys parked by the trailhead. It looks as good size on the pictures... There is large dirt to park on east side of S2 1/4 mile north off 78 and on west side of S2 may be 5-6 miles south off 78.

Yup plenty of parking at the trailhead, but if the campground doesn't mind parking there and they have a store for beverages after....why not park there.

I may see you there. I'll know by Friday.

The way we are doing the route, we will plan on stopping in Borrego Springs for lunch. I usually don't like to stop and eat lunch while riding, but it will just be too long of a day without it. Ken

I am a maybe for this ride. Gas prices may be forcing me into early retirement. Diesel above $4.00 WTF! Highest price, but least refined.

Make up your mind on the place and time and I'll be there. I've never ridden the squeeze or heart attack hill and always wanted to.

The Red Earth Casino is having an off road event with live bands off of S22 this weekend

The first post was edited at 1:00 PM today 3-12. The meeting place was changed, it won't change again. Read the first post, all the info you need is there. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

We will be doing most of the riding in Anza Borrego State Park. To be legal for this ride, you will need to be on a plated bike, with a spark arrester installed. I have been checked in the park and they looked for blinkers and mirrors. Ken

what do they do if you don't have a mirror?

By the way, my buddy and I are most likely going to join you guys and then camp in blair valley or somewhere close by in the park. I've got a bunch of firewood and food + beverage if anyone else wants to join us for camping let me know.

I don't know, 3 of us got pulled over and we all had mirrors. I didn't ask what would happen if we didn't. Ken

I just finished some work on my bike and noticed my chain slider has reached it's service limit. If I can find one tomorrow I'll be riding on Saturday. If not I may be looking for a usable patch for it so I can ride on Saturday. ^_^
