Camping Gear

Recommended Posts

I want to get some bike packing equipment.

Starting with bags. I've got this really nice rack. Pro Moto Billet

What kind of bags would work good with this?

Just a 350. Probably only need to carry stuff for 1 or 2 nights max

Thanks

It really depends on your camping gear. If it's cold you have to carry more stuff. Most guys with KTMs go with giant loop bags. They don't seem to be big enough for everything and that's where your rack will come in handy. I run dirt bags on my husky and there awesome but need an external frame. Pretty sure the don't work on the orange bikes due to the lack of subframe. My advice is to try to avoid a bunch of different bags all bungeed on if you can avoid it. Those guys seem to spend most of there time frustrated trying to keep everything from shifting around.

I've ran the giant loop great basin and misc wolfman bags with decent success.

current setup is this http://www.moskomoto.com/collections/all/products/reckless-40l-system

works really well for 1-2 night stuff but you really have to picky on ur gear and use the smallest tent/pad and bag possible they have a 80l kit but too big for a small bike. My 40l with backpack with clothes works for me and actually fits more thank giantloop great basin at 60l

I have the same rack on my EXC 350. I use it mostly for the KTM rear fender tool bag...to keep tubes, pump, spoons, small parts, etc. for shorter rides and Baja. (See below) The Giant Loop Coyote bag also works well on a 350, but is not waterproof, so if you buy it also buy the dry pods.

Good stuff, thanks! please keep it coming.

What do you guys know / think about these:

Wolfman E15, 22 liters, too small? http://wolfmanluggage.com/products/e-12-saddle-bags

Wolfman Beta Plus, 45 liters, too big? top heavy? http://wolfmanluggage.com/products/beta-plus-rear-bag

Giant Loop Great basin seems like to the go to for the Giant Loop products. Is that because the other one (Coyote) is too small?

That Mosko looks like a very nice design

Yeah, I didn't see anything in the Dirtbagz line that would work well with the 2012 KTM EXC-F. Nice bags though.

I use the GL Great Basin for longer rides. It's a pretty frickin' good system.

I use a smaller DirtBagz bag strapped to my rack (like yours) for day rides. Mainly just tire tools and first aid stuff.

For overnighters and brief Baja sojourns I have some waterproof Ortleib side bags.

Bagstr,

Is that a Giant Loop Mojave and a Giant Loop Columbia?

Amgems,

Rogue dry bag and Mojavi. The Rogue 17ltr carries tent, sleep pad, chair, ground cloth and bed roll. Left Mojavi is tools and first aid. Right is hand pump and spare parts plus 2ltr water bag. On camp trips, I add another Wolfman zipper bag across the small Giant Loop bag on the rear rack. ( 21" tub ). The Wolfman carries clothes and dry food in zip top plastic bags.

Others prefer the larger Coyote. But, I note they still need a second bag at the rear. My preference is multiple access points. This system stays put with the help of the ROK elastic straps.

The photo shows the smaller straps I typically use on the second bag. One inch are used on the Rogue bag.

Good Luck

amgems - don't know where you're located but you're welcome to come by and look at the R-80 and WM Beta plus some cheapies I have. bp came by and decided on the R-40 and he's not that far away, nor is Bagster. Maybe a quick "bring your luggage" trial is in order....

Again, Great stuff. Thanks a bunch!

I watched a few videos online that really give me a good idea of how these things look and work. Thanks for the invite to check 'em out, but I think the videos, and all the info above, give me a lot to go on. One video has a few familiar faces https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js8IURhON6s

I'm really like that Mosko 40l. http://youtu.be/n4Nn-y3E0rw and http://youtu.be/DJg-u0t7vBE

I pack very light and think that would work nice. In combination with my Zac Speed Dakar http://www.zacspeed.com/12site/usa/2012-dakar.shtml I should be able to carry all I'd need.

I used to bike pack some 40 or more years ago. Just used to throw this big honkin' back pack on and go. I could kinda rest it on the seat to take some of the weight off when on smooth stuff, But, boy things sure are a lot nicer now with the new equipment out there.

Yeah 40l is awesome and you can remove the 10l top bag and put in a 20 or 25l drysack in its place to get like 50l or so. Like i said if your gonna buy the reckless 40l your welcome to come check it out first

Do you guys use compression sacks for tent and or sleeping bag?

Yes and no with my old bags like the giant loop i did because it was just a bag that didnt compress but problem with compression sacks it doesnt effectively use space just a bunch of balls dont use up all space. With new system i push sleeping bag into bottom and seperate tent rain fly and poles easier to pack then use compression sacks for clothes and misc and it uses up all the space better plus my new bags are effectively a big compression sack so fits nice

I have several waterproof compression sacks that I carry for my sleeping bag and assorted gear. Not so much for the compression but for the WP aspect.

I'm a Giant Loop guy......I use the Coyote for longer trips and the Mojavi bags for overnight jaunts and day rides.......I have the E10 bags from Wolfman but never use'em......I can swing you a deal if interested......also have some big 40L Ortlieb bags that I haven't used in years.....

Like Bagstr said, access can be a pain in the ass with the GL bags.......so I usually also carry a Wolfman dry bag on top of either the Coyote or Mojavi with misc. "stuff" I may want to get at quickly/easily......I put my tent, sleeping bag, chair, and misc. "stuff" in there......

I don't really give a sh*t that my tent is too damn big......I like a bit of space to stretch out.........but I know I need to drop the $ on a good/SMALL sleeping bag because my Big Agnus Hog just takes up too much space.....
