KTM vs. DRZ + YZ

Recommended Posts

I've done Encinitas to Ramona or Palomar plenty of times on my WR, gotta agree with Vacman your butt is probably the limiting factor.

For me the limiting factor was always, "How much will it impact my fun?"

Assuming the "fun" part is the dirt (After all...why else would one buy a dirt bike?) then the ride to the trails is just a commute. For me, 50 miles to get the to the trails would cannibalize my time, energy, and motivation to ride hard out there. Then, you've got a long haul home to look forward to as well.

My fun was impacted enough to buy a truck. Now I listen to music, talk on the phone, and generally relax during the drive so I can ride hard when I'm fresh, and then truck it home feeling completely spent!

To each his own. Or, "your mileage may vary," as the cool kids say. =)

Thanks again everyone. The comments on 60MPH DRZ are good to hear. On a side note...went to the SUpercross last night...always fun to watch. Dungey looks like he's the one to beat again this year. Cooper Webb is awesome....oh to be 20 again and ride like a madman. :)

Over the past 6-7 years I have been going back and forth on plated bikes and straight stickered bikes, and a few in between. I tried the do it all bike thing both ways....taking an MX bike (2007 ktm 450XC) and making it more long haul dual sport capable and the other way, 2001 XR650R and trying to make it more nimble and track friendly....neither worked very well where it was never intended. Spent a lot of money to end up with something that ended up tolerable in another discipline, and worse in the disipline it was designed for. in between a few plated ATKs, a few other MX and XC type bikes.

if it were me, Get 2 bikes. YZs are plentiful and cheap. And pick up a plated bike strictly for dual sport. Those RFS bikes are bullet proof, just get the one that suits your needs. FYI 06-07 450XC are a short stroke SX type motor with a hybrid 6 speed, and I believe it is the same with the MXC. I got about 4-5k miles in 2 top ends and the other owner got a little less. The EXC motors are long strokers with a good wide ratio tranny and typically last much much longer, you don't scream them to get into the power like you do the SX type. I saw a lot of 525s getting 10,15, and 20k miles a top end.

I think I may have figured it out:

1. DRZ400 (plated) - For longer rides, desert rides, rides with a material amount of street riding, keeping up with bigger bikes, multi-day rides, etc.

2. TE250/WR250F/CR250X (plated) - For McCain, Corral, an occasional track day, single track, and generally shorter rides.

3. DRZ110 - Just because I love it!

So now I'm on the lookout to fill the second slot. A small displacement plated trail bike! Looking to spend under $3k.

Grazie!

See, I told you. Buy them all. Ride them all. More bikes = MORE FUN & money.

There is no "one bike does it all". Two will get you close. For my type of riding (90% dirt) the two bikes I have now get me the closest. The 500 has enough grunt to handle transfer sections (street) and single - track, while the 250 fx is a blast on the track as well as the Dez!

Well, after riding Lark with KenS and Dylan this past weekend I had enough! It was time for me to commit to a real single track bike. After reading everything I possibly could, watching every video possible, riding at least 5 different bikes, and studying Craigslist like it was my job...I landed right where I started.

I picked up a green sticker 2001 YZ 250 this week. It's fully dialed for single track riding, clean as can be, complete suspension build for my exact weight, all the other goodies included, and cost me $2k flat. Also, it's scary fast. At least for me.

So I've got my DRZ for dual sport and my YZ for anything that doesn't require a plate. Hell yeah. I'm comin' to get you Kenny!

BP619...in retrospect your bike would have been a great buy a few months back! But luckily I was able to find another just as nice after chasing my tail for a bit.

Thanks guys!

I don't know how to post pictures here. Do I have to host them on an outside site first?
