There is also this little Comet that claims 1/4 wave on 146 and 1/2 wave on 446. There's problems with that math, but we're beyond that. https://www.gigaparts.com/comet-antennas-sbb-1nmo.html

Comet makes good stuff. Might be worth a try.

Bagstr 291 Posted February 1, 2018 5mm, ring terminal - attached to metal belt clip tapped hole 5mm tapped connection to sub frame which is bolted to steel frame Solderless Terminal What we have here is and experiment. You have heard of those I would imagine. Hypothesis, Test, Conclusion. Hypothesis - Some sort of Ground Plain would aid the Handheld Transceiver ( HT ) increase range Test - Although not the 3ft square metal roof minimum, my thought was the metal bike frame could have impact. Conclusion - After testing in the field, in my opinion there was no impact ( negative or positive ) on the quality of range or clarity of audio. Field Note: Out in the serpentine canyons of the Dez, once Van moved out of site and a few corners distant, the audio quality diminished per normal. Thank goodness, as I don't need more cabling to manage. Note to Self - Study how and when to adjust the squelch function.
Reximus 10 Posted February 3, 2018 Bags, I have heard dialogue of people attaching an equal length radiator (antenna) on their handheld, changing it from di to bipole antenna. The other option is to look up a j pole antenna. A lot of our guys use them in AK. To be hard to find a creosote Bush tall enough but maybe you could use an extendable device like a tent pole. lunchb0x 0 Posted February 4, 2018 Not trying to derail this conversation too much, but I'm curious to see if anyone has tried the other "non" UV5r Boafeng HT? Particularly the UV-82HP. I'm intrigued with the dual band monitoring capabilitity and it looks like it will work with the Rugged Radio / PCI harnesses.
royboyz 36 Posted February 4, 2018 I don't know a whole lot about the technical aspects of radios but I have one of the Boaefeng 7 watt radios with a high gain antenna and helmet kit and it seems to work good but the scan is super slow on it and now they have a 10 watt https://shop.bajaracinggear.net/brg-10-portable-10-watt-race-radio.html

I noticed it says the chargers have EU plugs. I don't really need the chargers anyway but you can probably buy a EU to US adapter. We'll see how this works out.
