KTMrad 516 Posted July 27, 2011 "Be Prepared is the Boy Scout motto".......and a good one. Always be prepared for the worst when riding....especially when riding by yourself. This sign sums it up....photo I took while riding in an old mining town outside Vegas.......

KTMrad 516 Posted July 27, 2011 Knowing how to use a compass is good too. I always have a compass with me. Knowing what failures your bike tends to have is good too, so you can carry certain spares with you. Spare levers....brake, clutch, rear brake and shift lever are musts on longer trips. Spare fuses, knowing where your fuses are. Check your wheel bearings and your spokes (make sure tight and none broken) before a long trip. Check for loose bolts and fasteners often. JB Weld...yes, but make sure it's the quick setting type, there are 2 types. I always carry duct tape....a full roll is too much, so I strip some off a regular roll, and wrap it around a large bolt, this way I can carry just enough. Also, the duct tape at Lowes, Home Depot and hardware stores is the cheap stuff...the best duct tape is available at AC Wholesale Supply Houses.

paulmbowers 236 Posted July 28, 2011 the best duct tape is available at AC Wholesale Supply Houses. I beg to differ. Oh, may I please differ? Would it be alright to differ? Best duct tape in the world is not duct tape at all, but: Gaffer Tape Here's a link for you: http://www.tapemonster.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=
carguy 1 Posted July 28, 2011 Communication is very high on the list. Ever see the movie 127 Hours?? A way to contact someone for help if all else fails. Telling someone where you are going and expected time of return. Riding with a buddy so you can help each other out and enjoy the fun with someone. My favorite, WATER/FOOD, enough for a few days if stranded is always great.
Riggerdan 147 Posted July 28, 2011 I always carry duct tape....a full roll is too much, so I strip some off a regular roll, and wrap it around a large bolt, this way I can carry just enough. Great idea.. I take about 3' or 4' of fluorescent GAFF tape and wrap it on a fat tip magic marker in addition to about 5' or 6' of electrical tape and some friction tape - possibly some reflective tape - great combo and the ability to leave an ( analog ) message as well - light weight and compact I use gaff at work tons of it ( pro gaff ) is my preference.... comes in many bright fluorescent colors as well - U-Line is a good source have about 50 rolls in the garage if anyone is interested needless to say, Orange is my favorite color.............. Travace 0 Posted July 28, 2011 i neat tip ive seen for carrying your duct tape is to take 2 to 4 inch strips of duct tape and put them on your fender leaving a quarter of a inch or so space between each layer so its easy to peel each individual strip off. paulmbowers 236 Posted July 28, 2011 I fold mine- take it off the roll and fold it on itself for several layers. Lies flat, no problem. if it's good tape, like shur-tape. Or, in a pinch, pro-gaff.
blind_in_1_ear 0 Posted July 28, 2011 blind agrees with the "differ"er in the back...and Riggerdan too! other part i find with gaffer's tape leaves less adhesive after removal... duct tape leaves a little of the gunk behind, i find...but yeah, X2 for gaffer's tape ... *completely useless info alert*--read no further if you don't have the "need to know" OCD-- heck, if you got this far , i appreciate it! ok so i was wondering since i've seen/used a possessive '(*ie:gaffer's)if it was "right" ..i went a-wunderin'... wikipedia says....Gaffer tape, gaffer's tape, gaff tape or gaffa tape are all acceptable...TMYK
