Third Noob Overnight Riding/Camping Event

Event details

The ride will start at Main Street Coffee in Ramona on Saturday, November 16th 2024.

Address is:  680 Main St, Ramona, CA 92065

Ride will start at 2:00 PM....show up early to converse, etc.  EDIT: Start time moved to 1:30 to allow for a bit more sunshine at the end due to the time change I forgot about.

Arrive ready to go, fuel tanks full, water, snacks etc.  There will be a stop less than ten miles from the campsite for gas/food/beverages/water/etc.   Little to no cell phone service at the campground! If you need to check in with anyone, do it at the gas stop.

We will head out of town, turn onto Magnolia which shortly thereafter turns into Black Canyon Rd.  This is a gravel road for about 11 miles.  It has some narrow sections with blind curves and no guard rails but it's pretty basic stuff.  At the end of Black Canyon Rd, we will turn left onto Mesa Grande to enjoy some twisty blacktop. This is a noob event so we won't be going fast, just a relaxing pace.

We will go past  Josie's Hideout and then turn left (north) onto Hwy 79 into Warner Springs.  There is a gas station in Warner Springs that has several selections of cold beverages, ice, candy bars, chips, etc.   They have been able to set up some great sausage sandwiches for us the past two years so if people are interested in this I need a count ahead of time so I can call them to make sure they have enough ready for us.  You can also bring your cooking gear set and practice using that if you prefer.  It's all up to you.

A couple miles past the gas station, right turn onto Lost Valley Road and it's about seven miles of twisty/narrow/rough pavement to Indian Flats Campground.

The campground has a couple of toilets, picnic tables and fire rings in each space.  NO RUNNING WATER.  It's $12 per space + $5 per extra vehicle.  I have camped with two motorcycles per space on all kinds of campgrounds and can't recall being charged an extra vehicle space, but it probably makes sense to try to get two adjoining spaces if available and give the forest service some money.  It would be nice if everyone who comes along brings a five and a few ones so we can put money in the box and continue to support our local campgrounds.

40 miles total from the coffee shop to the camp ground.  It took me about 1.5 hours on the street bike, I stopped to take a few pictures and to talk to the people in the gas station and buy a beer to enjoy at the campsite.  Sunset is just about 6:00 pm on the 16th, group rides usually end up being a bit slower and pictures are always nice.  I don't want anyone setting up in the dark, so getting started on time is important.

Here's a GPS track that I lifted from DSM8, hopefully it works.

What’s the camp fire situation? I plan on having the wifey bring some firewood. Anything else I should have her tote up?

Yes, if anyone is coming in with four wheels please bring some firewood. I’m considering taking my van up there but I’m not sure yet.

Hope we see y’all out there.

Looking forward to blowing the dust off my camping gear and hanging with a few Moto friends. Saturday night might bring a steak for the campfire.
Sunday I’ll ride to Anza. One of local favorite tracks and get a burrito. May go back through the camp site. Might stay on pavement from Anza to SD. Any one wanting to Sunday ride with me is welcome.

Good point Zubb, on Sunday you can just pack up and go home or go do more exploring.

Warner Springs forecast for Saturday night is lows in the 30's, so pack accordingly.

I’ll likely throw the bike on the back of the Jeep and hitch a ride back with my wife on Sunday. 30degrees? Brrrr. Someone say steak? I will bring a few Yellow fin steaks to share. Do we have a headcount? Who else is riding up from Ramona?

There are a few other people interested on Facebook.  My buddy Justin said he’s coming and bringing a friend, @PaulyPickles might go along with his BIL.
Bring your thermals for sleeping comfortably!

I'm also driving up in my pickup truck. Hey Mo, I'll have to come by Thursday or Friday to pick up some wood from you....or early Saturday morning.

I love sleeping in the cold temps. Feet tend to get cold first so I’ll pack the heavy wool socks to sleep in. And merino top and bottom for sleeping.

Hi All, I recently moved to SD (couple weeks ago) and would like to come on this trip. I ride a 690 Enduro and have decent(ish) experience off road. Cool if I tag along for this ride? Looking forward to meeting you all.

Yep, feel free to join in.  The ride is very basic, just enough to get some dirt and some street.  Nice to get out and camp with some like minded individuals.  See you there!

Still on for tomorrow.  Overnight lows in the 30’s, but it’s good practice because the weather is one of many things that are out of our control during a trip.
If I’m expecting cold weather I bring a silk sleeping bag liner.  It packs down smaller than the size of a tennis ball, adds a good amount of warmth.  Don’t forget a beanie/head covering.
