In search of tracks

Recommended Posts

I have a good friend who is moving to SLC, Utah but wants to ride from SD to his new home with as much offroad as possible.

We had thrown together a few options which include doing most of the CDR or maybe a Grand Canyon route. The real problem is we want to be challenged everyday (think "blue" trails with some "black" trails included - NOT fireroad/pavment riding unless needed) Everything I have looked at on paper maps and the GPS leaves us "slabbing" it out way more than we want AND we still don't get to hit any of the really cool stuff like the 5MOH in Utah (No way we would be able to complete the whole thing, we want to atleast get to the first "wall climb")

Basically if anyone wants to join us, we would love to have you, the goal is to ride our of SoCal between Mid-May or Early June.

We really need some planning support, either GPS Tracks or routes from paper maps.

As always, thanks.

David

I don't know if Adam's travels would help, but bounce around his site. I can offer rescue (bike and rider hauling) from SLC in the form of my Dad, an SUV and trailer. I'll watch this for planning....wish I had the VAC time as I was just thinking this'd be a fun way to go visit.

David I'm trying to put a ride together around that time from Escondido to Lake Havasu and then Sadona and then around the Grand Canyon. I've put together most of the ride off road so maybe you can start your ride with us and then break off around the GC.

There are some tracks in this file that run between Baker to the west and Hanksville to the North:

http://www.dualsportmaps.com/?link=100096 .......Probably not very technical......

Likewise, most of the tracks I have between Vegas to the west and Brianhead to the NE aren't very technical.......how many days are you setting aside to make the trip? I would also suggest checking out GPSKevin's "Utah Roulette Files" for some ideas/tracks: http://sites.google.com/site/gpskevin/adventurerides

I can tell you from experience that you wouldn't want to ride the Red Trail or 5MOH with camping gear/bags on your bikes.......you want your bikes to be "skinny and light" on those trails (so, if you do incorporate that into your trip, stage/hide the bags up top and loop back to get'em ;) )

This is my thought:

San Diego to Peach Springs AZ:

Then use this track from Peach Springs to Page:

Then Page to SLC UT:

That doesn't get you all the way to SLC, but it's close. Have to figure out that last little bit. From the Strawberry Reservoir, it's about 70 miles into SLC. Could wake up late that day and make it a lazy ride into town.

This might help with getting some tracks started from the Strawberry Reservoir to SLC:

I've ridden most of these tracks thru Utah and usually the stuff above 9000' is still snowy in early June. The Skyline track for sure will be impassible but there are plenty of trails that stay lower on the mountains. National Geographic Trails Illustrated Maps are a good source for Utah Trails. There is also a DVD available with maps of Utah trails at www.stateparks.utah.gov or 1 800 ohvride. Utah mud is vicious stuff so I'd check with some locals before going up in those mountains. UTMA might be of some help.
