bikeslut 1 Posted January 2, 2014 Look for the "seam"...most have one; the trip wires run under those Try putting the side stand down You can beat it in court if you have to...I've done it Wait for a cycle-worth, then proceed when safe

If you look at the seam, you'll see it forms a loop, usually square because they use a target saw to make it (when retrofitting) and those saws don't make good circles. It's the loop that is the sensor area, not just the wire. Ride over and stop in the center of the loop. Then wait a cycle or two and ride through.
Sneeker 29 Posted January 2, 2014 This is an 250cc issue all the time, not enough metal. Ride over and push the crosswalk button. Not ideal in heavy traffic or left turns but can be done if you're daring.

I've had more success with the kickstand right ON the seam The DRZ is high and fairly light.I've learned some tricks The klr triggers signals in the next lane

Honda90 0 Posted January 3, 2014 Thanks guys! So it's magnetic?
tsr 0 Posted January 3, 2014 A LEO I spoke with about this said there is no set number of cycles needed to be waited through. He also said that running the light is not legal, but added that if the light is "malfunctioning," what is one to do? I had to deal with a "malfunctioning" light just a few hours ago on my V-Strom !!!
paulmbowers 236 Posted January 3, 2014 Thanks guys! So it's magnetic? Yeah- big coil that senses steel. Ok, technically, it's inductance. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/car-driving-safety/safety-regulatory-devices/question234.htm

KE6UPI 0 Posted January 3, 2014 OK California Law. I looked it up, but good luck. I'm going to write this down and check with CHP. So the light is malfunctioning if you bike doesn't detect you. (21450.0() Running a red light is OK if the light is malfunctioning. (21800.0(d.2)) 21450.5. (a) A traffic-actuated signal is an official traffic control signal, as specified in Section 445, that displays one or more of its indications in response to the presence of traffic detected by mechanical, visual, electrical, or other means. ( Upon the first placement of a traffic-actuated signal or replacement of the loop detector of a traffic-actuated signal, the traffic-actuated signal shall, to the extent feasible and in conformance with professional traffic engineering practice, be installed and maintained so as to detect lawful bicycle or motorcycle traffic on the roadway. © Cities, counties, and cities and counties shall not be required to comply with the provisions contained in subdivision (B)/> until the Department of Transportation, in consultation with these entities, has established uniform standards, specifications, and guidelines for the detection of bicycles and motorcycles by traffic-actuated signals and related signal timing. (d) This section shall remain in effect only until January 1, 2018, and as of that date is repealed, unless a later enacted statute, that is enacted before January 1, 2018, deletes or extends that date. 21800. (a) The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway. ( (1) When two vehicles enter an intersection from different highways at the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on his or her immediate right, except that the driver of any vehicle on a terminating highway shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle on the intersecting continuing highway. (2) For the purposes of this section, "terminating highway" means a highway which intersects, but does not continue beyond the intersection, with another highway which does continue beyond the intersection. © When two vehicles enter an intersection from different highways at the same time and the intersection is controlled from all directions by stop signs, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on his or her immediate right. (d) (1) The driver of any vehicle approaching an intersection which has official traffic control signals that are inoperative shall stop at the intersection, and may proceed with caution when it is safe to do so. (2) When two vehicles enter an intersection from different highways at the same time, and the official traffic control signals for the intersection are inoperative, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on his or her immediate right, except that the driver of any vehicle on a terminating highway shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle on the intersecting continuing highway. (e) This section does not apply to any of the following: (1) Any intersection controlled by an official traffic control signal or yield right-of-way sign. (2) Any intersection controlled by stop signs from less than all directions. (3) When vehicles are approaching each other from opposite directions and the driver of one of the vehicles intends to make, or is making, a left turn. carguy 1 Posted January 3, 2014 Most agencies are changing to proximity sensors because of so many issues with the magnetic loops. Each agency is required to ensure the loop pick up motor vehicles. Some locations also have loops for bicycles too. If the location that is not working for you is a usual location you use you should consider contacting the public works department and requesting them to repair the loop to detect motorcycles. I had a training session with CHP and they recommend that you make a right turn and look for a safe place to u-turn not run it. They will write you up for running a red. Or you can try all the goofy ideas with scrap metal to trigger the loop assuming it is working at all. Another new rage for the midnight recycle-rs is to steel the copper in traffic loops and street lights, it is worth $$$$$$$. They have found a few BBQed to the poles. :torch:/>
Honda90 0 Posted January 3, 2014 Good to know. I had wondered why no one talks about this. The light by my house is a no right turn on red. So I'm still stuck. Today I ran it. I am paranoid to sit and wonder if someone might come from behind and run me over. I am generally paranoid on the road. Always relieved to make it back to the yard. TdubLady 1 Posted June 3, 2014 I asked CHP about this-my little bike and I have gotten stuck a couple of times at lights. I was told wait a reasonable rotation, then proceed with caution. And then he said if you're in a rural area and can see all is safe, just go. Also, I learned that as long as your wheels stop moving, it is NOT mandatory to put your feet on the ground to qualify as a "complete" stop. (I thought that was cool to know)

(I thought that was cool to know) But while you are waiting a "reasonable rotation" you have to sit there and worry about cars coming from behind. I hate that. Plus, if it didn't get you the first time, it's not going to pick you up the next cycle either. The light nearest my house works going east, but not west. Since I know this I try to time traffic so a car triggers it just before I get there. I have had to run it before.
