The U-boat commander has made our motel reservations. We are excited!

Sweet - In keeping with the newly established tradition, we'll have Wayne ride through the water crossing at Afton Canyon first :coolio::lol:

Great, so now I'm slightly paranoid about how much gear to bring. To tell the truth, it seemed like an "out and back" so I hadn't really put that much thought into it. With dozens of long sport touring trips across the Alps for 7 or 8 days(including camping) I've suffered thru most kinds of weather and everything from soft luggage that did work to the stuff that committed suicide at 100mph and all manner of hard luggage, tank bags you could barely see over to the kitchen sink types that carried some NASA approved multiple backup of all needed items.

The little tank bag from Wolf and my little fender mount should be enough for some flips, shirt, shorts, t-brush, meds, patch kit, tools, and a hat.

I've seen what the GS crowd has done with Touratech and the farkle enhancement program by loading down a perfectly fine bike and think I will avoid that level of packing.

As a contact back to the route, I'll be available to drive up early Friday and spend the night. I currently have a smallish trailer(4x8) that will hold just my bike. If you are interested, I can get a slightly larger trailer from Base for about $30 and put 2 bikes on it(yers and mine) then we could carpool. I will be returning on Monday after what I'm sure will be a nice long Sunday night sleep. I'm in Fallbrook, so you could ride over on Friday, load up and carpool up. Let me know if you are interested, as I would like to save some $$. Or... I could throw my little DRZ on your truck and share the gas money with you, same schedule.

See you on the trail!

Bingo! ;)

It's just an out and back.....less is more......all you need to carry on your bike and/or in a backpack (besides std stuff like tubes/tools/etc.) is something to walk around in Sat night (think flip flops not shoes), your wallet, and a toothbrush.....then you'll put the same riding clothes back on Sunday and return to Barstow.......leave clean clothes in your trucks in Barstow.....

I'll be living out of my saddlebags til Wed so I'll have a bit more.......but not much more......

Saw the Diva yesterday got the finger wag :thumbsdown_anim: so I made my reservations last night and I am booked for Barstow(Fri/Sun) and Laughlin :thumbsup_anim:

OTOH, My wife could possibly be the designated chase vehicle if needed. She is off that weekend, and could bring stuff and meet at designated watering/fuel places on the main roads. Any interest?

As long as everyone is prepared to cover ~115 miles AFTER Baker on the way over, and between Laughlin/Rasor Rd. and/or Baker on the way back, we shouldn't need a chase vehicle......OTOH, some folks may appreciate lightening the load off their backs with a change of clothes and it would be handy to have a truck "on call"........best spot for a truck to "sit" either day with gas and/or snacks, etc. would be the intersection of Kelso-Cima Rd. and Mojave Rd.

N35 10 34.4 W115 30 32.4

To get there you take 15 to Cima Rd. and head south ~22 miles......the The Mojave Rd. Monument pictured in the first post is on the right.....

100_1148.jpg

So your call, NOT necessary but certainly wouldn't turn down the offer......I would hope folks would be there between 12-1pm both days.....

So Dirt Diva is out?

Fuel Range

Day 1:

Barstow to Baker via either std track or ADV track = ~80 miles

Baker to Laughlin = ~115

Daily total = ~195

Day 2:

Laughlin to Baker = ~110

Laughlin to Rasor Rd./15fwy ("if" Soda Dry lake is open) = ~120 miles

Baker to Barstow = ~80 miles

Rasor Rd to Barstow = ~65 miles

Daily total = ~200 miles

Daily totals do NOT include recommended/short side trips off Mojave Rd. to Lava Tubes (~8.5 mile round trip) or Ft. Piute (~4 mile round trip).......I was thinking some folks might want to check out the Lava Tubes on the way over Sat and check out the remains of Ft. Piute on the way back Sunday......optional tracks/waypoints will be included in GPS file.....

Ride in small groups to make time/eat up miles...... ;)

Updated first post with this info......

NO!!! You can't get rid of me that easy - JimBob was just referencing my "gentle reminder" yesterday to make his room reservation - which apparently he did :good: - didn't know I could be so compelling - :big_boss:

Bruce and I are still IN! (Scared but in  )

:good:

(Scared but in  )

NO need to be scared/intimidated  .....this isn't a hard ride in terms of terrain (IMHO)......but it is a long ride if you're not accustomed to big mileage days.......my advice is too consider taking the Adventure Track over to Baker.....it'll save you some time/energy with PLENTY of "good/scenic stuff" remaining on Mojave Rd./Christmas Tree Pass into Laughlin......

Remember, first and foremost, it's not about "enduring" the ride, it's all about "enjoying" the ride/scenery..... ;)

You have the option of riding through Afton Canyon/Mojave River basin on the way back into Barstow on Day 2 if you don't feel satisfied/worked after Day 1

Huh.

120 miles.

Probably make it using the small tank.

Probably.

Maybe.

Damn close.

Heck no, I'm not taking the "girl route" :P: That's the part I'm most looking forward to :D

Nervous cause I've never ridden my DS bike in the sand (however, I do ride Glamis with knobbies on my dirtbike). That will change this weekend though - planning to ride the Pinyon and Fish Creek areas, for the first time, Friday and Sunday. I'm guessing that might be similar to the Barstow to Baker terrain - Yes?? No?? - Anybody??

Just saw your bike is a 310 - perfect! (Nice!).....you've ridden the X in the dunes?..... and recently rode ~190 miles in a day?..... - sounds like you're more than ready! Good plan to play in Fish Creek!

FYI - The Laughlin Edgewater just replied to an e-mail I sent them regarding our breakfast on Sunday.......the Sunday "Brunch" will be available beginning at 6am on Sunday so everyone can load up with food/coffee before we split on Sunday morning (the brunch is included in the group package/rate)......."I" consider any 6am meal to be "breakfast" not "brunch" so I was concerned they may not have it available until later in the morning......then again, it's a casino  .......you can probably order a steak and baked potato at 6am :lol:

Well technically to be a brunch, it has to have mimosas and bloody marys.

I'd encourage anyone thinking about riding the Mojave Rd. to buy "The Mojave Rd. Guide" by Dennis Casebier......the GPS tracks will contain several waypoints along the Mojave Rd. marking points of interest mentioned in the book.....we'll be blowing by most fairly quickly (long riding day at ~180 miles) but reading the book will still make the experience more meaningful......

You can buy it here: http://www.desertusa.com/web_cart/db/pages/5094.html

I broke out the Guidebook again last night for a memory refresher......I've been editing many significant waypoints to correlate with the most recent edition (4th) of the Mojave Rd. Guidebook – Each "Mile Marker" (MM) waypoint along our GPS Track will now have (1) Mile Marker distance from CO. river on east end, (2) reference to the specific page number on which a Map can be found in the guidebook showing that particular Waypoint, (3) elevation data for that particular waypoint (I know, I'm a geek, but I enjoy this stuff  ).

So, once again, I'd encourage all of you to order the Guidebook and read it before we ride.......or bring it along for occasional reference......it will make the journey so much more interesting for you if you know the history of the road you're traveling on and imagine what it must've been like back in the day.....

As previously stated, we'll be on and off the road a bit on day one.......but on day 2 we'll leave the casino, ride to the edge of the CO. river directly across from the ruins of Fort Mojave (Waypoint set), and stay true to the ~140 stretch of Mojave Rd. between the CO. River to the east and and Camp Cady to the west (except when we detour for gas......provided Soda Dry Lake is "dry/passable" for the return trip)
