Another day not spent riding 06/23/09

Recommended Posts

After Jeff and I went out on a dualsport ride on Cedar Creek trail, we decided to take a hike to Cedar Creek falls before the weather got really hot (and possibly no more water was running in the creek). So we hopped into the Jeepy and drove out Boulder Creek road to the staging area and moseyed down for a look-see. It was still pretty warm out on the trail and there wasn't too much water flowing, so the falls was a mere trickle. Still it was very scenic and we saw lots of lizards and a very fast snake.

A camera shy horned lizard.

Mildred Falls is dry.

Heck if I know what this guy is. Maybe a Whiptail. He was about a foot long.

A Side Blotched lizard in the shade.

Li'l sand lizard.

A view of the valley and the old road. Wish we could ride down here.

The trail down to the creek was steep and rocky.

A tiny tad....

that turns into a teeny frog, truly thumbnail sized.

Cattails and reeds in the pool.

Weirdo plants.

Pretty flowers....or weeds.

Some shots of the falls back in the spring of 1992, which was the last time I hiked down there.

Thanks.

These shots were taken with a Kodak C613 as are most on this website. I also use a Nikon SLR D40 and a Kodak Z1465 IS. The shots from 1992 were taken with a Minolta SRT101, a veritable tank of a 35 mm camera, which is still ready for duty to this very day, but won't probably ever see any more action. <_<

Jeff used a Cannon which he recently got, to take the picture of me hopping down the rocks.

Mimi, the rode that you referenced that you wish you could still ride. This road will take you all the way to the back side of Vejas Casino on Vejas Grade Road-the gate at the bottom where the dirt turns into pavement. There is also an old Indian Cemetary out there. At least that is what I have heard! <_<

I rode my Elefant down that dirt road/trail a few years ago to the bottom near Cedar Creek Falls. The trail get pretty narrow at a few spots with a nice dropoff where it washed out. When I got to the bottom, didn't know which way to go and it had signs saying "Private Property - Helix Water Authority", so I headed back up to the top the way I came.

Nice Pics Mimi !!

Back in 1992, the first time I hiked down there, there was a flimsy opened gate just down the trail from where hikers park their cars and there were ATVs on that road that day. Back in 2002, I tried to drive my Jeep down the same road, but there had been a large steep pile of dirt built up at the trail head to stop vehicles (probably because the road is unmaintained and considered too unsafe for vehicle passage). It didn't stop my Jeep of course, but as you pointed out, a big wash out stopped me from making it all the way down. Now the road has a big, sturdy gate at the top with a horse gate on the side. I don't think that they mean to let any vehicles down there anymore. <_< The trail is in pretty bad shape; perfect for a midsized dualsport bike. :tease:

Yep, I have heard that there is a residence at the bottom of the hill past the signs. The water goes to El Capitan Reservoir. The Ghostriderz are working on access to this area, as there is a way to get a day pass for bikes-Stay tuned for details!

I read in my Afoot And Afield in San Diego County hiking book that all the land below the falls belongs to Lake El Cap. They orginally planned to build a taller dam that if there was enough rain, the water could have backed up to about the water fall pool.

Go Ghostriderz!
