Salton Sea and Bradshaw Trail

Recommended Posts

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

The plan is to meet somewhere convenient, then head out towards the Salton Sea and ride the Bradshaw trial (route courtesy of The BMW Gost Riders). We'll check out whatever else we have time for around the area, then rack out at a cheap motel in an undisclosed location saturday night and ride back to San Diego on sunday. And of coarse, there is the option to make the trek back west on saturday evening. We'll figure out all the details as the date gets closer. Your input and help with planning this ride is welcomed and appreciated.

Sound like fun??

So who's in ??? :blum3:

Looks good for the BMW Ghost Riders(Geist Uberholt). The overnight motel is a great idea, as It will be a long and fun ride. Also, food is scarce in that part of the country. It would be nice to eat and relax instead of having to ride back to San Diego. We are in for two days!

Awesome ! We'll need to figure out where to meet up. I'll be riding out from Ocean Beach early Saturday morning. We need a rally point and time to group up for the Bradshaw Trail ride. I'm checking it out in Mapsource/Google Earth, and here's what I've got so far. It looks like it goes almost all the way to the Colorado River!

If I have it right, the Bradshaw runs between Interstate 10 and Hwy 78. Mileage is about 60 miles one way.

Shown here is from Hwy 78/Hwy 86 to the end of the trail. About 120 miles one way.

Here's a look at the start @ Interstate 10.

A few trail highlight that we'll probably pass through along the way.

Be advised that these are only preliminary estimations, as the specifics of our route will be planned and decided with the knowledge and expertise of the BMW Ghost Riders. Specifics and mileage requirements to be announced.

Kevin, now that I'm remembering, you were talking about hitting it from the east side of the Salton Sea, not the west side as shown above, right?

I'm in pending my work schedule, so I'll have to get back to you on that. If I can make it, i'll be trucking the bike out to the start.

Another overnighter cool!! I'm concerned that this ride might be all fire road but I'm still interested and I would be trucking my bike out.

Correct Troy. We will pick up the trail about 10 miles south of Mecca on the East Side of the Salton Sea. I will get with the Ghost Rider GPS Tech to get the specifics. So it would be best to go up the east side from Calipatria.

This trail is NOT A FIRE ROAD. It is a nice challenging ride with a little of everything.

Last time we rode out there, we met at the Golden Acorn Casino for fuel and food, then headed out I-8 to Plaster City, by the Blue Angels Airbase, then back country to Mecca. Nice rural ride. How does that sound????

Hey Pyro,

The route on your map has a long section along I-10 that isn't necessary. You can get in the dirt right by Mecca.

Here's the route I took:

I can give you a tracklog if you like.

pyroCAM will be active. I plan to hit the trigger when we enter the dirt east of the sea. If you want to keep yourself off youTUBE, don't ride in front of me.(

little SDAR classic is now aproaching 10,000 hits)

Thank you friends, it looks like our plan is starting to get some meat on it's bones!

So here's the run-down so far:

We meet up at the Golden Acorn early saturday morning Dec. 1. Then we ride out for a pavement run past Plaster City to the east side of the Salton Sea. Next we'll pick up the Ghost Riders' Bradshaw route east going into the dirt towards Arizona. Saturday night's destination will be one of the Best Western's in beautiful Blythe, California - right on the banks of the Colorado River. ( http://www.blytheareachamberofcommerce.com/ ) After that, all we have to decide on is what to do sunday . . . wake up, eat some breakfast, and ride the route in reverse?

For our riders that want to truck/trailer their street legal motorcycles to the east side of the sea, we'll need to set up a secondary check-point & meeting time to follow-up the Golden Acorn rally point. So what do you think? Sounds like a blast huh? :(:D:crazy:

Looks good. We can ride back a different route from Bythe. I know where there is a "Alien Rock Formation", then on to Boardsmanville for lunch-hit the Glamis Sand Dunes on the way back to San Diego or wherever.

Here's a ride report from ADVrider that might give you an idea of some of the terrain in the area, though it's not be the same exact route:

Bradshaw Bomb Run 2007

Their actual route: map

Cool thread - thanks.....

Wow, thats a power packed thread, thanks ! Well if that is any indication of what's in store on this ride, we're in for a bomb-ass bradshaw bomber run for sure! I think I would stay away from those bomb casings, even if most of them seem to be filled with concrete.

I'm off to do the thanksgiving thing, and lots of you are due to head out on your thanksgiving week adventures. Happy trails to all ! I'll chime back in next week as we start to finalize the plan for this great ride. Happy SDAR Turkey Dayz To All ! :)

We need to determine the meeting time at Golden Acorn this Saturday morning. Kevin, what do you think is a good time? I'm guessing somewhere between 8 and 9:00AM ? You make the call and we'll be there.

From there I am roughly estimating the highway mileage to Westmorland at 65-75 miles. We can top off our tanks there, unless our route coordinators have a better stop in mind. I seem to remember an AM/PM or 7-11 on HWY-78 in Westmorland. Then we go north-east toward the dirt portion of the ride which will encompass the Bradshaw Trail and more, finishing near Blythe to find hotel/food. I looked on the internet and found 3 Best Western motels in the Blythe area. I'm not sure if we'll need reservations but I will check into that. If there is anything I am forgetting, please chime in.

See ya'll soon!
