I've had my odometers quit working twice on organized dual-sport rides but have never had my GPS quit working so I wouldn't say it's rare...

I say run both - both have merits and having a backup system is always good...

This is just laziness. GPS tracks are so easy to do even a caveman can do it (freaking ride and download the tracks to clean up on a computer when you get home) - rollchart actually takes effort. The organizers are just plain lazy...

I'm totally up for this, but being that I ride a 20th century bike that only has a roll chart holder I'd have to be in a group with GPS.
