Newb alert! Newb alert!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, just wanted to drop in and introduce myself.

I just bought a new bike and i'm looking for anyone intersested in riding with a total newbtard. I rode a lot when I was a kid on 2 stroke YZ's but it's been 20 years or so since I have ridden, until lately. I live in Oceanside and can ride every Saturday and also some weekdays in the late afternoon if work permits.

I have an 08 WR 250R that seems to suit me just fine. I've just been riding it around the neighborhood to break it in(only 75 miles on the odometer so far) but looking to hit up some trucktrails or fire roads with someone who can show me some easy rides in North County.

I lurked on this forum for months before buying my bike and everyone here seems totally cool. I'm glad I joined such a great forum! Thanks

Welcome aboard, fellow North County member. Not too many trails (especially newbie friendly) around your neck of the woods, but there are dirt road and fire roads around Ramona and Palomar Mountain that would suit you just fine. In fact, the ride we took last Saturday, would have been perfect for you, except for Hixon trail. See you on the trails soon.

Thanks Mimi, I figured there wouldn't be many trails in my neck of the woods but how about De Luz or Tenaja Truck trail for a newb? I have seen photos of rides in that area that look fun. Or Nate Harrison?

Well, Nate Harrison is on the front side of Palomar and Palomar Divide/Highpoint is on the back side. Tenaja is a nice ride too. Down to the south, there's Boulder Creek, Deerpark, Thing Valley road. Out at the desert, you can ride Grapevine, Jasper trail, etc. Down by Campo and Tecate there are a lot of fire roads and also out east of Otay. Plenty of good stuff.

Welcome Woodrow. Not too much up here in North County as far as off road goes, but enough to get started on. Keep an eye our for rides posted by darylhunter, he is a most excellent tour guide of the local riding areas.

From my experience, the key to really enjoying this sport is mainly staying healthy enough to be able to ride. I have broke, twisted, cracked, ripped, torn, stretched, and impacted various parts of my anatomy. Luckily I was wearing good quality protective gear an am able to still hit the trails.

Don't ride over your head. Some of the rides that we do, may have some faster riders, don't try to keep up with anyone else, ride at your own pace, don't worry about them, concentrate on your riding, they will wait.

Taking the dirt class is an excellent idea if you can do it. Carguy is the guy to talk to about it, you can PM him.

Find a riding buddy or 2 with similar abilities and likes. Some guys like to enjoy the view, stop often and take lots of pics, some like to ride difficult stuff at a quick pace and seldom stop so they can get as much riding in as possible, but most are inbetween. Ride as often as you can, the skills will come back quickly. Look forward to riding with you soon. :) Ken

WR250 in O-Side... sounds familiar... Jason?

Like others have said, unless you have a truck, not a lot of opportunities real close.

motoring out to East County or the desert on a 250 might be a bit of a stretch, but can be done.

Any ride you want to join, but are unsure of the skill level; just ask... like you said, most of the people here are very cool, and will steer you in the right direction.

Welcome to the site; see you on a ride soon

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Sounds like I will be loading the bike up to get to some of the better trails. I have a shell on my truck so I used a hitch mounted hauler to get my bike home from the dealer and was sweating the whole way! It just looks a little sketchy seeing it rocking on the hauler but I'm sure alot of members are using them with no problems.

Bikeslut, I did notice there is another member who rides the same bike that lives in Oceanside too but I'm not the same person.

Joliet, you're right about staying healthy. That's why I'm looking more for the mellow trails and riders. I shattered my ankle when I was younger on my YZ and had a couple surgeries to fix it along with knee surgery and shoulder/collarbone issues as well. That's why I stopped riding for years and just stuck with surfing. I can't even explain how great it feels getting back on a bike though. Just gonna take it slow at first.

Cheers,

Woodrow

I use a Joehauler, made locally by Joe his self up here in San Marcos. Mine has that snugging device built in to it that locks it down pretty tightly into the receiver, so there is hardly any swaying motion at all. Never had any problems with it, except for dragging in dips and whoop de doos, and it got bent at a gas station pump when some clown in an F350 didn't notice that I had it hooked up with no bike on it, and he accidentally ran over it with his gigantic front wheel when he was leaving. <_<

Always ride at your comfortable pace and don't let anybody pressure you into doing otherwise. Everybody has different speeds and styles of riding. :D

I borrowed the hauler from a friend and don't see a logo of the company who made it on it, it does look well made and very similar to a Joehauler. Has anyone used the add a bike hauler? I like the idea of not needing any straps.

Welcome to the group, I've heard that the new WR250 is a pretty decent bike. See ya on the trail.

Thanks! I love the bike so far. I did tons of research before buying it and the bike got great reviews and seemed well suited for the type of riding I want to do. I also like the maintenance schedule and fuel injection. The only bummer would be the 2 gal. tank but the bike gets 70 MPG though.

I think he is hinting at me (Jason) and the fact that we should probably hookup both being noobs, from oceanside, riding the same bike :friends:

Think I have about 3,000 miles on mine now. I "only" get 60mpg but thats doing 70+ on the freeway and my bike has some mods.

I'd like to do some dirt/gravel road exploration out Palomar or Tenaja Truck trail etc. I have a GPS but havent gone off that way on my own.

Hey Jason, we should go ride together sometime soon. I wish I had more hours on my bike than I do. I went on vacation for 2 weeks a couple days after I bought it and a busy weekend last week. I still have the dealer tags on it and less than 100 miles. I will be getting some new boots and pants this weekend and then i'm all set to go ride!!!

What mods have you done? I'm waiting to break the bike in before doing any major mods but I will be getting a new FMF pipe and programmer soon as well as some new nobbies, probably some Dunlop 606's. I did get rid of that blob of a tailight/plate assembly and put on the DRC edge kit with 601 blinkers front and back, some Acerbis rally pro handguards and i'm waiting on some custom shroud graphics before putting on my black plastics.

Palomar or Tenaja sounds good to me possibly for next Saturday.

Woodrow

Next Sunday the 9th I am taking the bike up to LA to go to Hungry Valley OVRA/Gorman with my father in law and the wife's quad.

I do 60 miles a day on the bike because I work in Del Mar and use it for commuting.

I have K&N Filter, Power Commander, 46T rear sprocket, some airbox mod, charcoal canister gone, skidplate, handguards, dirt bagz, GPS, windscreen (which I remove for offroad)

Things I am most interested in doing right now are new tires (the TW301/302s have been mostly fine especially for street/gravel riding and really werent bad when I went on Kernan with the guys here)

Bigger fuel tank which isn't out yet and a seat pad or new seat for more long term comfort.

I highly recommend the 46/47t rear sprocket. I feel I have more usable highway power and because the bike likes RPMs it helps it in the slow stuff. Check out the Yamaha Dual Sport forum on Thumpertalk also for a lot of good information
