padu 353 Posted January 10, 2022 Hey guys, Not sure if this has been asked here before. Does anybody have a map of trails for McCain? The closest I've found is this area map: https://www.desertusa.com/mccain/oct_mcain2.html The trails are numbered (see below), and I wonder if there's a more detailed map with the corresponding numbers? dirt dame 589 Posted January 11, 2022 That map link shows the legal routes in the area, which is about 9 miles long. The construction of power lines and windmills has chopped a lot of those trails up with their access roads, so some of the trails don't have signage where they end up sort of zig zagging across access easements. There are also some limited access roads that extend beyond the OHV boundries.
Bp619 110 Posted January 12, 2022 Yeah maps are worthless there just get lost and use the windmills to get you back to truck hard to get lost there it's like a big rectangle with a road or fence on east and west
padu 353 Posted January 12, 2022 I've been there a couple times. I was just wodering about the trail numbers - if someone had the trouble to stake those to the ground, there must be a map somewhere no? Some pictures I took this weekend using the drone: https://padu.smugmug.com/Places/McCain-Valley-Camping/i-Gt7rb46/A https://padu.smugmug.com/Places/McCain-Valley-Camping/i-4T4brdn/A https://padu.smugmug.com/Places/McCain-Valley-Camping/i-Whs8tXM/A

padu 353 Posted January 13, 2022 Yes! I want to redo that photo when someone is actually there, so you can have a sense of scale.
paulmbowers 236 Posted January 14, 2022 Somebody liked it so much they drilled and bolted all the way up so people would forever know and worship their massive climbing prowess. <<< Sarcasm Sheesh.

It used to be a pretty popular climbing spot in the 80s. I would ride up there and watch people climb up and repel down. One time, I watched as three guys prepared to come down. The first two checked their lines and zipped smoothly down. The third guy gave his line a test, hopped over the edge and plummeted all the way to the ground. Somehow, he managed to avoid serious injury, but it was pretty scary to watch.
