danrider 5 Posted January 12, 2015 They both are quality built bikes. If you are going to stay in the dirt with a big bike the KTM in my own opinion is the way to go, It is 80 pounds lighter and that is huge in the dirt. But the BMW 1200 will always be the granddaddy of the Adventure bike. You are lucky if you own either one. Great bikes. Trust me doing really hard stuff on these bikes is no fun. They are a handful and you will get really overheated fast when picking them up several times after falling on some crap. That being said some guys never fall, not in my case. Suspenders 43 Posted January 12, 2015 On the money. Desert dash not a problem on the 990 but on the BMW Not fun anymore. Put a five hundred mile road day on them and you will wish you had that BMW. Especially the seat! BMW is a road bike that can handle dirt although a bit out of its element. KTM is a dirt bike that can handle road although a bit out of its element. EddieEarl 6 Posted January 13, 2015 BMW is a road bike that can handle dirt although a bit out of its element. KTM is a dirt bike that can handle road although a bit out of its element. That is exactly the summary I've heard on these two bikes ... That's why I bought the 500 EXC ... it owns the dirt and is still legally allowed to drive on the road.
