Southern Sierra Adventure Route first week in September 2012

This is a week long or so ride in the first week in September. Starting in Bakersfield

we start on dirt fairly quickly and start climbing up to the foot hills on Rancheria Rd to Alta Sierra.

We then head into Sequoia National Monument from there via the Portuguese Pass trail.

Once in Sequoia National Monument after a stop at the trail of 100 Giants its back

on dirt through the monument on Windy Gap Trail and Solo Peak road to Camp Nelson.

We take back dirt roads through the monument stopping at Camp Nelson and then back

on dirt on Redwood Rd following to the 190 to fill up gas in Springville.

We follow the 190 around the foot hills winding through oak woodlands and

grassy hills and then picking up dirt again on Whitney Peak Rd. We follow

this until we connect on the 198 at Lake Kaweah.

Filling up on gas at Three Rivers we head up to higher elevations enjoying the

twisties through the Kaweah river valley on the 198 into Sequoia National Park.

Not far after entering the park we'll stop at Crystal Cave for a little adventure.

We head through Sequoia National Park on the Generals highway until we get

to 40 mile Rd and cut off on dirt to Hume Lake. Now in Kings Canyon National

Park we follow 40 Mile Rd until we get to the 180.This is a scenic 21 mile

back loop getting us off main route into the back country of the park.

Only on the 180 for a few miles we turn off on Millwood Rd and get back on dirt.

We follow Millwood Rd for about 50 miles enjoying the back country.

Toward the end of this extended dirt track we'll come to McKinley Grove of the giant sequoia.

We get back on the hard top following Dinkey Creek Rd toward Shaver Lake. We'll gas up at

Shaver Lake and enjoy the scenery and replenish our food stocks.

After Shaver lake we follow the 168 turning off on to Acorn Rd. From here we'll

be taking multiple small paved and dirt roads winding through the back country

of Sequoia National Forest headed toward Yosemite National Park.These include

Sugarloaf Rd, Italian Bar Rd, Mammoth Rd and others. This takes us over and by Redinger

Lake and in places gives awesome views of the high country and peaceful meadows.

This will eventually drop us off onto the 41 and from there its onto Yosemite Valley.

Of course Yosemite Valley is not a rush job I'm sure we'll want to soak it in and take our time

before existing and taking the route over the Sierras to the eastern side.

Once we decide to head out we'll start heading east on the 120 over the

mountains through Tioga pass and enjoying completely awesome scenery!!

Once we are over Tiaoga Pass to the other side we'll head north a bit and head out

on a dirt loop near Monolake to explore Bodie ghost town. Bodie was a mining town

that boomed in the 1880s and was finally abandoned after a fire in the 1930's.

Its now a state park.

After Bodie we head south to Mono Lake and onto the 395 taking the June Lake loop.

It looks tiny on the map but its a 16 mile scenic loop that eventually drops us back onto the 395.

Back on the 395 we head south again until we turn off to Devils Post Pile National Monument.

Then south through Bishop on the 395 in the longest stretch of hard top on the route

all the way to Pearsonville to fill up and head west back up into the hills and an

interesting twisty mountain road called Nine Mile Rd that takes us from the

desert floor up through Joshua trees, Pinyons and finally Jeffery Pines. We

turn off here back on dirt taking a route called the Chimney Peak Bypass.

This heads through the mountains toward Lake Isabella.

The Chimney Peak Bypass connects with the 178 and heads into Lake Isebella. After Lake

Isebella we head south through Bodfish and then turn back to dirt on Piute Mountain Rd.

This is about a 25 mile section of dirt heading through the foot hills and high desert

of Pinyon Pine.

We finish on the 58 slabbing back to Bakersfield shake hands and head our different directions.

We'll camping all the way no hotels etc. The idea is to make this fun and cheap

with lots of interesting back dirt roads.I'm riding two up with my son so i'm not

interested in extreme speed . For comms bring a FRS/GMRS compatible headset. If

you don't have one Midland has a GMRS headset with a push to talk handle bar button for around 30 bucks.Connect it to a Midland radio which are real cheap

and you have comms just route the wires and speakers behind your helmet pads.

My son and I will be using Midland BT2 Bluetooth headsets connected to an FRS/GMRS radio.

You'll need spare tubs, tire change kit, tools, tent, cook stove, cookware,

tent, sleeping bag, sleeping bag pad and what everelse you want to bring.

Your invited if not a jerk can be a team rider and no drugs. I don't want

my 11 year old around that.I don't expect a very large group

for a week ride I'd be happy if just a few of use rode the route.

starts in San Diego we're I'll be starting but for simplicity sake we can

meet up in Bakersfield.

I added Crystal Cave to the route. It was right along the track.

That place looks Sweet. I had never heard of it, thanks for posting it. I cant make the trip but if you want info on hot springs by mammoth and bridgeport shoot me a pm.

Is there anything out in the wild open or are they commercial? I found a Google Earth KML for hot springs but they only had the position not any useful info.

Its a popular spot. I camped there for a few days, last year.

I added the in list to the main post. We have one support vehicle thanks to SOCAL Froaders a local 4X4 club and maybe a second one. A friend is checking work for the dates.

The ride planning is maturing and has participants on bikes and 4X4's from multiple sites to include Facebook, Meetup, Christian Adv and of course this site. So everyone can discuss the ride with out going through me as a conduit i created a Facebook discussion page.

The route also will still need tweaking as one of the riders discovered that Portuguese Pass was washed out this winter.

Heck yes!! I just mounted a GSXR muffler on the klr with a sparky arrestor for this trip and it works great! Much quieter than the Staintune.
