Big Bike ride and camping trip May 5th and 6th

Recommended Posts

Sounds great, probably a good idea, I like it.

I was not looking forward to the late ride home on the first route.

This also works better for anyone that wants to "Park N Ride" (leave your truck/trailer at my place and ride) since it is a looped ride.

Ok found us a campground. Turns out Lake Hemet campground does not like motorcyclists:( Just a mile away there's Hurkey Creek campground. They have a group site for 160 bucks. Assuming we have 40 riders that sign up thats only 4 dollars a rider!! They don't mind the bikes either. Anyone want to volunteer to front the 160? We'll have our own restrooms picnic tables and can set up the tents how we want.

You'll notice by the map we'll be on the opposite side of the creek from everyone else!!

Here's a youtube video about Idyllwild. A bit cheezey but gives you the idea if you've never been there.

Motorcycles allowed in site 1-7 only, no more than six occupants and two vehicles per site, according to this brochure on Hurkey Creek. Looks like all the motocycle sites are taken too.

EDIT: Sorry, i missed the note about the group sites. I assume those are okay for motorcycles?

We haven't made the reservations but yes called them and they said all three group sites are open. The two vehicle per site according to the lady on the phone is overlooked for motorcycles. Not that it matters for us at the group site. Blake said he'll pay for a group site next week. We need $160 for one night at the group site. If we have 40 riders thats only 4 bucks a piece :)

Note: Yes they are cool with 40 or so motorcycles rolling in on the 5th :)

So i got a call today from Lake Hemet and guy asked if i was looking to make reservations. I told him that a girl told me that they weren't very motorcycle friendly. He said yes thats true. He recommended Hurkey Creek :)

WHAT THE HELL!?!?!?!?! I just leave for a few days to go riding in Ocotillo Wells and I come back to this?!?!?!

Just messing with you all. I really don't care where we camp as long as we get left alone like last time. I was wondering myself if day 2 wasn't a bit ambitious. I don't care where we go or what roads we take as long as we have a good time like last time.

Can we move the start date to tomorrow?

Just tried but they were closed - will call Monday when I get back from Warped. Did you talk to anyone in particular?

Its probably time to discuss the next scouting trip I would like to ride from Anza to Idyllwild following the May 5 and 6th route using Bautista - 6S16 with a side trip down Thomas Mountain Rd and then to Rouse Hill Rd, Bee Canyon to San Jacinto TT to Idyllwild. Then return from Anza by Cooper Cienega TT to Puenta La Cruz Rd to Lost Creek Rd. Anyone want to propose a date for the scout? As always you don't need to participate in the camping weekend ride to participate in one of the scouting rides.

For clarity, the route doesn't include Table Mountain TT. Table Top is the one that's gated/locked.

Bautista - 6S16 - 6S18 - Rouse Hill - Bee Canyon - San Jacinto TT

I'll join as long as it's not 28-April. That's the date of the Low Cal 250.

You are correct that should read Thomas Mountain. We want to make sure that we can ride Thomas Mountain Rd down to Hurkey Creek Camp Ground.I edited the post.

If you get up into Idyllwild, there are a couple of out-and-back trails listed on the motor vehicle use map that are pretty scenic (at least they were 30 years ago!). May Valley Rd. (5S21) and S. Ridge Trail (5S11 to 5S11B).

Houston.... we have a problem....just called and she said the group sites are booked. Individual sites can only have two vehicles each including motorcycles. They like to have motorcycles in spots 1-12 but enough are not available. I did leave a message with the head Ranger Rick to see if they can make an exception but don't hold your breath, it's always about money.

There are enough (30+) small sites in close proximity to each other available according to the reservation system on page 2. It's $20 for a site and a $7 reservation fee, no fee discount for multiple reservations. So $13.50 per head if splitting a site so we will need to make our own reservations at this point.

I double checked and motorcycles are allowed at all sites.

Any other ideas?

hey you guys wouldnt have room for a semi-noob on a klr would you?

Unless your name is Charles Manson I believe this is an open ride. Just be able to camp if you are planning on it and ride safe. There will be easy to medium difficult type trails but since your on a Klr you won't have to be a Gaston Rahier.....bonus if you know who he was...:king:

This could require a bit of a route adjustment but can you try Los Coyotes Indian Reservation campground?

http://www.loscoyotes.info/

Maybe we could take over Thomas Mtn campground? We would need Adventures passes but other than that its free.

Toolbox springs?

Santa Rosa Peak?

Pinyon Flats?

The Thomas Mountain or Ramona Campground(on Thomas Mtn with a dry pit head) would be perfect.

I THINK (???) there are yellow post campsites at the top of Thomas Mtn, but wouldn't want you to rely on that.

You guys are on bikes , just pick a spot. Why even be in a campground? What is the advantage, neighbors, stinky porta potties, chopped up tables, rangers? Just find a nice spot off the beaten trail and camp, leave nothing but tracks and erase all evidence possible that you were there.

Just my opinion.

Fire rings are good for drinking and telling lies around and shitters are good for well....shitting. We don't doing anything that will bother a Ranger anyway.

Update: John from Riverside Parks is looking into why all 3 group sites at Hurkey Creek booked up since last Thursday - he thinks maybe they pulled em for maintenance and is going to get back to me. We still have the option to go there in individual sites.

Thanks for the update please keep us posted becasue if we need the individual site we need to have Roger send out a mass email.
