Just a quick update. As of today we have 5 riders for this trip to Mike's. I suspect some more will be added and some will drop off. Our route will be compadre to the ranch, cut east and up to Laguna Hanson and Ramona's for fuel, down the mountain and out to Jamau, Valle Trinidad for lunch and up the front way to Mike's.

Lots and lots of dirt!

Hmmm... dry.gif (I've not been to Mike's for a long time)... where you guys parking and departing from? And have you reserved your beds at Mike's yet?

We'll be leaving from the closest secured parking lot from the border, it's about 50 yards from the Tecate crossing on the right side of the highway. I'll be calling Mike's later today or tomorrow to make the reservations.

if it's "open invite" ... I'll keep it on the back burner. I'm not sure I can be gone for both days just yet (after being gone last week/weekend for the Baja500).

I hope you can make it Dave, and if you do make it after completing the ride you're on now, you get an immediate pass into the Hardcore Hall of Fame!

I'll be home Wednesday around mid day.

Count me in, unless Lyn wants to do something this weekend.

I talked to Mike on Tuesday and made the reservations. Saturday should be a fun night at the Sky Ranch as Mike said he already had 51 reservations before ours. Unwinding around the pool with a beer in hand before, and after dinner, is always a good time at Mike's.

Can't wait!

SOOO!!!! HOW WAS THE RIDE????

Well, let's see... I guess the answer to this question depends on when, and who you ask. Here is how I expect each rider would answer the question.

Likely answers while taking a break in a completely isolated Baja meadow:

Bruce - This trail reminds me of the Desert Dash ride.

Dave - This beats the hell out of taking Compadre.

Eric - How can I manage to return here next weekend?

Mark - I'm glad I put knobbies on the KLR 650, but I wish I had a lighter bike.

Likely answers while taking a break at Laguna Hanson:

Bruce - Way too much sand for me, I'm really glad that's over.

Dave - Now that the easy part is over, what's next?

Eric - If I could convince my dad to celebrate Father's Day on Thursday, I could return to Baja on Friday.

Mark - Why is my odometer only registering 70 miles? I feel like we've traveled 1500!

Likely answers while taking a break at a taco stand in Ojos Negros:

post-14267-068817800 1308189757_thumb.jp

Bruce - I can't watch this, I need to pull my jersey over my eyes.

Dave - Oh wow, I think I can see his ankle swelling through his boot!

Eric - I wonder if Mark is going to eat his last two tacos?

Mark - You have to be kidding Eric, you want me to smile for this ****ing photo?

* Mark had an off just south of Rancho Ramona and injured his right ankle. At the taco stand in Ojos we knew Mark was hurting, but we didn't know to what extent. Immediately after his crash he was able to walk on the ankle, so we held out hope that it wasn't too bad. Mark (wisely) decided to end his trip at Ojos and Bruce stepped up and escorted him back to Tecate and assisted him with loading up. Dave and myself continued to Mike's Sky Ranch, where we stayed Saturday night.

Likely answers on Sunday morning in Valle Trinidad:

post-14267-018277900 1308190526_thumb.jp

Dave - This really sucks!

Eric - I told Dave to stop pinning it in every straight away. Looks like I'm riding home alone!

For $150 a Valle-T local loaded up Dave and his bike and drove them back to the Tecate border, and I completed the remainder of the ride solo. When I arrived home Sunday night I would learn that Mark had indeed broken his ankle. The break was bad enough that it required surgery, which he underwent this afternoon. Mark is a warrior by any measure. With a severely broken ankle he rode from Rancho Ramona, to Ojos, to Ensenada, to Tecate, and then drove his truck to San Diego. I wish Mark the very best and hope he has a speedy recovery.

Wow -your typical Baja trip. Glad everything worked out.

Dave is that the same bike you blew up on the cabo trip ?

Nope. This was th WR.

It is torn down now. Fairly certain the crank breather had a factory defect...it is welded shut where it connects to the motor. Bike started pudding oil due to a blown gasket due to no breathing.

I think this was really a matter of time thing.

I stayed at El Coyote in November and the place is great. I ended up there on accident with a few guys from Chicago and there were about 8 hunters. Dinner was the hunt of the day and soooooo good. I would go back. Perfect place to take your family.
