DR650 Starter Clutch Assy Help

Recommended Posts

Howdy all,

First off, Happy Thanksgiving

I picked up a '99 for $400 from a loady that runs but has a broken case mounting for the gear between the starter and flywheel:

Loady told me that previous owner had it welded but didn't install a torque limiter gear like other years have. Apparently the 99's came with just a regular gear instead of the torque limiter gear and this is a weak spot on this particular year. Is he right?

It's not weldable anymore by the looks of it and I'd like to know if the only way to fix it is to split the case and get another left side from Ebay?

I new buying it that it might be a "parting out" bike but was curious what fixing it might cost? Thanks for any input.

I'm not familiar with the DR650, but I'd have to say that you'd need new cases. I would not recommend just getting one side, they are matched at the factory and the bearing/shaft holes are bored as a set. Anyway, $400 is a good deal no matter what. Is there a kick start available for the DR650?

Late 98 to early 99 did not have a torgue limiter on the starter. When the bike shuts down, it kicks back sometimes....and what you have happens.

I'd bounce around the DR specific sites and ask/research. Don't know much about the problem other than it's a fix if you have the 99. Other than the pre-2003 not having a metal cylinder base gasket....no changes from '96 to current.

If you part it out....I'll take the wheels.

.....and no, no kicker avail.....well, cost prohibitive anyway.

Looking at ebay you can either get a set of cases for couple hundred, or newer engine for 1,000 best offer. Does not sound bad either way.
