If you take hwy 2 five or so miles south from Tecate there is a trail that brings you the back way to Rancho Santa Veronica which eliminates the hwy 3 part. The problem you will have is the trail from Laguna Hanson to KC memorial area has a gate that is sometimes locked.

Assuming big bike by your screen name. I can forward tracks on Monday.

You guessed right. I'm on a 990. Plenty of Mex experience, but this is my first time not trailering down. If you can send tracks that would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tecate- Old Compadre trail - Laguna hanson- Ochos negros- Lake diablo- mikes. I did this years ago with out GPS. Dont know the condition today.
