dislocated knee

Recommended Posts

last week up in Wrightwood on desert front road I biffed it in a silt bed. Since I was in the top of 3rd I hit and slid pretty far. That hit banged my knee up a little but I could stand and walk after a few min of rolling around in the silt. I decided it was best to continue on ,about a mile down the road witch might I add was some of the funnest rock garden ive ever rode, I came to a stop by a rock about 18-24 in tall and stuck out me right foot and pop went the knee and down I went under the drz again. After one friend rode my bike to a spot where I could ride, him and my little bro carried to the drz and off we went.Hwy 2 to 138 to 15s to searia back to the truck.X ray was clean so a week later I can finally get to the SDAR family and ask, does anybody know some rehab tips, what is the best knee guard, is there a knee guard to protect against a dislocation or just hits. Also what are some easy ways to learn about anatomy and how our body's really work. The doc says that by doing exactly the motion I was doing it would have happened no matter what, he called it perfect alignment. I almost forgot to say how cool it was riding by the tracks in the Cajon pass, the Mormon rocks are awesome. The forest road that goes by lost lake is closed so I couldn't check that out,all in all was a great day riding till the ride to the ER.

As a frequent dislocator, all I can suggest is follows Dr's orders but trust yourself

I DIDN'T get the knee and shoulder operated on like they suggested, but I InSISTED they operate on the wrist (which, when they finally opened it up, agreed with me)

I'll finally get the knee surgery probably, based on some lingering problems, but the shoulder has been ok...sometimes, once you dislocate, it pops out easier after that

There are a bunch of different high-speed moto knee braces out there - all of them super spendy. I've seen shop displays where they claim that you can get them covered by med insurance with a RX - the EVS models, I think. As they're sold individually, I'm guessing that would mean that med insurance would only cover getting one for the bad knee, because why would insurance pay $500 to prevent having to cover $10k worth of surgery on the good knee...

Bummer. But at least youre ok.

The knee is a special joint. Seems to be more important these days than in days past. but prolly cause i hurt mine and Found out that I wasn’t invincible like I had thought I was up to my thirties when I first damaged my knee surfing. Tore two ligaments and my meniscus. Had orthoscopic surgery on the knees and it took a few years to recover?

The knee can’t be dislocated. It’s not a ball and socket type joint. You basically have four main ligaments and in-between the joints you have the meniscus acting as a cushion. Then the knee cap in front for protection/kneeling and what not. Your ligaments and muscles hold the knee together and the tighter the better. Once you tear something it gets all loose and swells when aggravated. Get an MRI because a X-Ray won’t show the damage. It took me a month to get my MRI because the ins co and the doctors try to save money. I was told I sprain my knee for thirty days until the swelling wouldn’t subside

Keep the knee healthy and it works well. I take Glucosamine-Chondroitin regularly as well as ride my Cycle-cross bike almost daily. The G-C adds lube to the knee and the cycling keeps the joint and its associates strong and tight.

Motion is lotion. Work it out and make it strong again.

Scuba man is correct in saying that some med INS will pay for the knee braces. And the work well. Sometimes they want the Doc to write a prescription. I had an custom aluminum one when I first had the surgery.

I wear the Thor simple braces/knee braces and they are very comfortable. I could and should buy a better one…….But someday I’m sure I will.

Heal up, work it out and slow for silt……..hope you recover quick.

At first the knee braces are a bother , YOU need to make sure they fit YOUR knees.

They will put different strain then usual .

Now I feel naked with out.

Unfortunately I too have had knee issues and for me it is very important to keep the associated muscles conditioned because as Slaugo said it keeps everything together. I have no ACL in my left knee at all so keeping my hamstrings and quads tight are a necessity. If you have decent insurance, get a round of sports based physical therapy. Your Dr. should have no problem prescribing this at no cost to you. PT works wonders these days and they will teach you about how your knee works and how to keep it in shape. As far as braces go, don't waste your $$$$ on anything off the shelf that is not fitted to your leg. They make a plaster cast, (some are doing a 3D scan of your leg instead of a cast) and build the brace to you. My CTI braces are excellent, but there are others out there too. Your Dr. should again have no problem prescribing the braces, my insurance paid for them no questions asked. I had both of my knees scoped a few years ago and luckily they are healthy again but I am really careful putting my feet down while riding, I do a lot of feet on the pegs cornering! Good luck hope you get healed up....

I've torn ligaments in my knee and I agree with Slaugo's post.

Go to an orthopaedic surgeon who knows what he's doing.

Here's a recommendation:

Synergy Specialists

Tal S. David M.D.

3444 Kearny Villa Road

San Diego CA 92123

858-571-9500

Dr. David worked on my knee a few years ago and I highly recommend him. He'll diagnose your problem, fix it, and have you back to 100% in less than 8 months. Another doctor at Synergy is Dr. Maywood who used to be the NE Patriots team doctor so I'm sure he's a great orthopaedic surgeon too. I've never met him though so I can't personally recommend him.

I wouldn't go with an orthopaedic surgeon just because the ER referred you. They just refer you to whoever's at the top of their list. I've gone that route and wasn't happy with the results.

On a remote mountainside in Idaho when I was 52 I had a similar problem. I heard that popping noise, tore my ACL MCL Pcl and meniscus had to be life flighted out. I had two ligaments replaced one reattached did one year of hard therapy, Along with a lot of hiking and mountain biking, and was on the bike again. If you need surgery, get the surgery, do the rehab it will be good as new. I now wear CTI Carbon fiber braces on both knees for the last 10 years, can't ride without them.
