5 minutes ago, whynowthen said:It was good to meet you by accident yesterday. I am the guy on the Beta with the wife on the other Beta.
nice pics!
Good to see you as well. Nice to see a couple out riding dirt bikes. Hope to see you guys around more often.

Turned out to be a good ride. I thought I was late leaving the coast a little after 5 pm. I got to the top of the mountain around 6:20.
I had redone the front tire / tubliss system yesterday trying to get it to seal properly. It worked out well. I should of lowered the rear pressure more (next time).
I mounted the go pro and figured I would try it out going up the mountain.
Hmberg showed up. He was with someone else, but it turned out to be a couple that were locals that ran up the mountain. Another local rider showed by chance later as well.
It was a nice sunset!
Nice to see new faces.

Nice write up and pics Udo. Picking that bike is probably a b*%ch. I went down the other night on the 500 and picking it up is so easy compared to the 990. You have inspired me. I think I will have to do a shorter big bike over night locally.
Thank you

Sounds like an adventure for sure. Nice to have people with good attitudes to go through it with. Seems like you were very prepared. I do notice one thing you need to add to your gear, a CAMERA! I was telling my wife yesterday about the ride I went on a week a go with people I did not know. At the meeting point some people did not want to shake hands as they were scared of the VIrus. All that hesitation went out the window when we were helping each other up, through and over obstacles.
Good luck with the charging system. I have read that the older KTM's charging system was weak and needed to be upgraded.
Thank you for the write up. Glad it all worked out!

It was a fun ride. We were to meet at Pamo rd and Santa Ysabel truck trail at 3:00. Derek showed a little after I got there. We waited until 3:30 for anyone running late.
We headed up Santa Ysabel to Mesa Truck trail then Mesa Grande.. We headed over to Palomar and headed up.
A little to much talking at this point. Sun was heading down and I had stated that we would try to make it to Black Mtn for the 2fer Tues. We pushed it on the way back trying to make it. We made it to the Black Mtn truck trail and Santa Ysabel junction as the sun was going down. We did not see anyone and I was determined to head up and see if anyone was up top Black Mtn for the sunset. Black Mtn Truck trail is actually a decently long trail. I was very glad I had done some work on the bike. I had installed new tires with tubliss that was hooking up with the trail pretty well. I also contacted Konflict suspension and discussed what they had done to the bike and how to adjust it for the riding I was doing. Much more plush.
I made it just in time to see the last of the sunset. No one else was there.
Derek showed a little while later.
I was excited to head back down. I had never ridden the bike at night. The lights on the bike are great. I did not know what to expect as they are not the brightest PRO lights from baja designs, but they were bright. Little did I know that would get me in trouble later on the way home.
We split ways in Ramona and I headed down San Pasqual Valley to Del Dios. As I am on Del Dios I was playing with the lights trying to get used to the lights High beam/ low beam or both. As cars would come I would dim the spot as I should. The previous owner had changed out the lights and also changed out the light switch. He changed to a smaller unit and the selector is very sensitive from on setting to another. In the canyons of Del Dios a care was coming at me so lowered the lights. When the car passed I went to put the lights back up, but I ended turning them completely off. Now I am traveling down the canyons at 65 mph in total darkness. No cars coming to see the road. BLACK! Deprivation tank BLACK! I am trying to find the switch to turn the lights on. A few seconds go by and I cannot find the switch or get the lights to come on. Traveling at 65 mph you are covering some distance every second and I was traveling down the road with a guard rail/ canyon on one side and a mountain on the other. I hit the back brake. Back brake is locking up and skidding. I have to abandon looking for the lights and concentrate on staying upright and hoping to stop before I hit something. I feather the front brake and rear brake. As the bike is fish tailing I could feel it between my legs. It was the only feeling I had to know that the bike was upright and not tipping. All that was running through my mind is " this is going to hurt!".
As the bike was slowing down I put down my feet so I could feel if the bike was tipping. When the bike was almost stopped it came to a stop against the curb. My foot hit the curb and I ended up setting the bike down as gently rolled into the ditch. It was quite the challenge to be thrown into. I was a little rattled after words. It was kind of sad that after wards while the bike was laying there a couple cars came by they did not even stop. I get a call from my wife as I am getting ready to take off from the side of the road. "You have been in the same spot for a long time, are you OK?" The tracking on the phone can be a good thing sometimes.

We will try to stop at Black Mountain Truck trail on the way back for a Two Fer Sunset.
-
I was going to meet you guys up there. The camp ground is still and hour plus away from my house up there so I am going to get some more stuff done around here. Have fun.
-
Short notice guys. I had to bail on another ride so I want to get out local and try out some work I have done on the small bike. I will be meeting at Santa Ysabel trail and Pamo Rd at 3:00. We plan on hitting Palomar and coming back.

Nice Udo. When I went last week the lookout was closed. I really wanted to go up there. I am surprised the group did not go up. I will have to go back with the lookout now being open. Also I would like to run some of the trails/ roads in the park before people take it over again.
Thanks for posting

Went up to a ride on Mt San Jacinto. We were to start down at Cranston fire station and ride up to Idyllwild for lunch and then return. 6 riders showed.
Jeremy ktm 690
Blair Husq 310
Tyson 450l
Andy ktm 500
Mark Harley 800
Myself ktm 500
As we started up the mountain I was really surprised at all the shooting that was taking place right of the trail. Many people shooting into these little canyons. Beginning trail in Bee Canyon was an easy ride up. Had to get through all the people and jeeps. We then planned to go up a Black Diamond jeep trail. As we stopped and looked up I was surprised at the climb of the trail. From our intel it was a climb at the beginning. Pictures never show the real steepness of the trail.
If you lose momentum your done.
Jeremy went back down and cleared with clear trail and momentum.
We took a break after getting through that section.
We thought that was it. NO. It was a constant hill climb full of sections like or worse. Each section had a certain challenge. I had no traction. The bike was set up for HIgh Speed desert racing, not trail climbs. I would lose traction on the 2 ft wide line and then slide into a bike sized rut or hole. Then you are stuck half way up in sand trying to climb out a hole on the incline. I had not ridden a small bike in a few years, so my skills and fitness were not were they should of been. Flipped the bike over my head several times.
Action shot on different trail later in the day. On the way back from a look out.
We then headed up to Idyllwild for lunch. It was full of tourists. Lots of bikes of all kinds. Seemed they were having some type of fair. We got some stuff from the market and took over a closed business patio and had lunch.
After lunch we headed back down a easy decent trail back to the vehicles.
We did a little over 70 miles on the day.
All in all it was a great ride. Great group of guys. Big shout out to Blair and Mark who helped me through the tough stuff.

I am going to ride wed the 17th on the small bike. I would like to start early 8/9 am. Seeing who would be interested in riding. There has been interest in doing the Black Mtn so I will start there. I am open to riding area. I am open to doing some exploring. Just looking to ride. Anyone interested?

Dressed and ready to go. I took it out for a short off road break in ride. Getting ready for a longer ride tomorrow. Threw it around in the dirt. Such a difference from the 990. I have not ridden a small bike in so long. I do have a new seat coming, but this is the way it will be set up most of the time.

Maybe next week. My 500 is almost ready. I have a bunch of other business that needs to get done until then. I will definitely be looking to do some week day riding in the future.

I added the taller risers that came with the bike and redid the cockpit to fit me. Super comfortable now sitting and standing. Added the kickstand and rear rack. Took the bike out for a short motor break in run up and down the coast showing off some of its new habitat. It is really responsive. Had to be careful with throttle as the front end did not want to stay down.
New seat on the way. Tubliss to replace the inserts. New skid plate will be installed when I change the oil from break in. Getting close!

Clutch cover and Ignition cover guards?

What are your opinions about installing Clutch and/ or Ignition cover guards?
I see the upside of protection.
The only downside I can think of would be heat retention, but it cannot be that much.
