  1. I had the Hepco Becker crash / side bars with Hepco Becker center stand too. I always feel weird calling them "crash" bars. Here is the Adventure Moto Stuff shop bike with the side bars, skid plate, center stand setup and much more on it.
  2. Nice report. Huge dl650 fan here so I love seeing them in reports. I had one and loved it. FWIW I ran the HB tip-over bars and ADV Moto stuff skid plate which I found to be a great combo. Not sure if either is still available though this was In 07? Beside tires by far the BEST upgrade I made was Protaper atv high bars. It made the bike feel like a big dirt bike giving me so much more control and made riding on the pegs a dream, night and day difference. Very responsive, initially almost twitchy compared to the stock bend. Stock wires and cables work with these bars too. Love the milk crate too... is it Touratech
  3. Truman, In the future I'd be up for one a ride like you suggested starting on Tenaja TT unfortunately this Saturday is just too short of a notice for me. I have a DR 650 and live in Carlsbad. I'm not an expert rider so I'd probably be a bit slower than you. Slabbing a ways isn't a big deal for me and I'm down for all but the super gnarly single track that bring significant consequences . Unfortunately I don't have a truck or trailer. If you get out this weekend have a great ride.
  4. Cool write up and pics. Looks like you had a great ride and I’m always stoked to see a DL getting it done. Nice! I too shifted from weekend rides to half day rides since having a child. It’s all good.
  5. Good question. I’ll try to keep this short and not boring. Yeah.. Sensitive habitat… Often times this is posted by the county or city which comes from a recommendation found in the Conclusion section of a biological survey performed on this area by a private consulting company for the municipality. This typically is decided by the plant community or the occurrence of “sensitive” or “listed” (threatened, endanger or species of special concern) species observed in the area. Or it could be this as already pointed out.. http://www.ovrp.org/trailmap.php Or it could be… I’ve never rode at this exact spot but this trailhead head seems very exposed to a large neighborhood with many people who may or may not dig the idea of plated and sometimes loud dirt bikes parading through and riding off road? This could trigger complaints. I’m confident all in SDAR are responsible, stay on trails, tread lightly etc., etc. Unfortunately we are un-liked simply for what we enjoy even though we follow ethical practices. We all know this. I often equate off-roading to hunting in the way it’s disliked by those who have no clue but are simply preprogramed to oppose it. Perhaps keeping a low profile would help? Not blaming or pointing any fingers or trying to give anyone a hard time just thinking out loud. Or… I could be and am probably WAY off on all accounts. What do I know? I didn’t even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!
  6. Perfect. Now you can share it, and anyone with a stand alone GPS, or a GPX viewer app on their phone can easily use it. Yep - I just wish I could attach to these posts in this forum. I guess for now a PM will do. Great info. Thanks for putting these pieces together for us!
  7. that motionX looks neat. I just looked briefly at their website. I like how it geo references any photos you take and records the stats of the route (GPX) too. One thing that appears to be unique about the OsmAnd system is that it has GPX /route capture and display technology as-well-as street driving directions to addresses and locations. I.e. Starbucks locations for the GS guys and KTM dealerships for the orange guys. I kid fellas.... I kid. Any phone is likely to be able to run Google Maps, which is infinitely better for trips to "hard park" your ride in front of the local 'bucks. MotionX is a far better GPS tool IMO, and by downloading offline tiles and storing tracks in google drive, you never have to worry about space. I totally agree google maps is probably more comprehensive and all around better for street driving directions but you have to have cell service for it to work right?? As you all can tell I'm late to the smart phone scene and am still amazed at all the apps you can get for them. I got to check out an overview for motionx, wow it looks way cool. I've got a couple questions... You can download base map data "tiles" and store them local on the device to run it offline without cell coverage correct? You can share a map of a route you record and the map has hotlinks to photos linked located at their correct location on the map, what file type is the map graphic? is it a PDF fancy jpeg? do they make motionx for android? Thanks everybody for the great information.

  9. one thousand pardons if this info has already been covered on this site... OPTIMIZE YOUR ANDROID SMARTPHONE FOR DUAL SPORT RIDING https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC7qEh1TuXU I came across this youtube tutorial on how to make your android phone into a fully functional GPS and tool for dual sport riding including down loading all software and gpx files and creating gpx files. I do not have any of these apps so I can’t speak their performance but they look handy. This video is long but covers the installation and tutorials of the following apps. There are shortcuts in the description to each app in the video. Here are the main apps he goes over. If anyone knows these apps or has something to add on this topic I encourage you to speak up (I know you all are a shy bunch). OsmAnd – GPS software. To me it looks like this apps combines the functionality (recording and loading GPX files) of a handheld i.e. Garmin with the functionality of an car GPS being able to pride driving directions to addresses and destinations. http://osmand.net/ Everytrail Pro – Track you routes (GPX) and allows you to geo reference any photos or notes to that location along the route. It also records stats of the route. Trips need to be viewed at everytrail.com http://www.everytrail.com/android Ulysse Speedometer Pro - $1.99 Speedometer app, speed, multiple trip meter, compass etc. http://ulysse-speedometer-pro.soft112.com/ Flashlight – flashlight app, emergency flashers, etc. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devuni.flashlight&hl=en
  10. I had a great time on this ride. Thanks to 350thumper for organizing it, the sweepers for helping out and cool folks who took the time to take and post pictures and videos. The route was perfect I absolutely enjoyed it and meeting new folks. This was my first SDAR ride and 3rd time I’ve had my new to me Dr650 off hard surface roads. I was happy with my performance. I didn’t wipeout!! I hope to make more of SDAR rides in the future. Cheers,
  11. I really wanted to attend this but had a scheduling conflict. This event looks awesome! I can’t think of anything more Americana than flat tracking at the fairgrounds. Does anyone know of any flat track driving schools or workshops around? Thanks, Nick
  12. Unless something unforeseen pops up I'll be attending this ride. I'm really looking forward to meeting and riding with SDAR folks. Nick
  13. Howdy all, I’d like to do this ride but have a few questions. How many hours will this ride take? Half day, all day, into the night? Just need an idea before I go in front of the parole board. I’m also curious about the temps. I currently have a Cortech textile riding jacket which has ok ventilation at best. Road riding in this jacket has been fine at higher temps but I have not tested it DS riding in warmer weather yet. I'm still very new to DS riding. Nick

Thanks Bill, 9k on your 2014.....NOW Dats what I'm talkin bout! Will do. I'd also be totally down for checking out those spots in the future. If interested I'll be selling a Corbin seat in perfect shape. I'd like a lower one. yes. This ride looks great for me. I'll post on that thread soon. As for the civility conversation.... I now see what happens when complements are thrown around here.... they are quickly followed-up with poo flinging... Awesome. I love this place!
