I was right there last week. I recognize that wooden box thingy on the ground. I was surprised at how green it is up there.

Very cool. Still one of my favorite stretches of road. I used to camp out there and ride/explore on my old Honda 90 in the mid-seventies. The commercial mining operation was still going. The entrance was right there where the spring water runs across the (now) paved road. I checked out every spur on that road. There was one road (now pipe-fenced off) that led back to an old homesite complete with an old rusted out 30's vintage pickup truck. There were cattle in those days (some longhorns) as well as goats at one point. Someone was running some kind of experiment using goats for fire protection I think. Right where you go left off the pavement and drop down into Deer Park it was like parting the red sea through a massive heard of mini-goats. Pretty cool. We used to peer into the windows of the old rock cabin in Deer Park and wonder who it belonged to and why it was abandoned. It's no longer there. Indian Potrero trail runs by the old cabin site. As a 15-year-old, I rode it up into Cuyamaca State Park and all the way to 79. Also rode the PCT through much of the Lagunas. Most times we (my buddy and I) had no idea where we were. We just knew how to get back to our base camp north of Pine Valley where our parents had dropped us off. Are these mines along the same drainage as the tar paper shack? Here is an old hole just off of the main road.

I have an oval (as opposed to round) head. Just did a bunch of research this week and found that in my price range (cheap as possible) there is only one oval DS helmet - the LS2 MX453. I just ordered a hi-viz yellow one from Amazon; I'm awaiting delivery. Fingers crossed. Supposedly it is fiberglass instead of plastic and a bunch of Dakar riders have used it in the past 3 years. I bought the Acerbis Koerta from Amazon for 140 (It's more like 170 now). As you can tell from the photo, I am into seriously high-end gear. (I have since painted the armor hi-viz yellow - because my kids were running out of things for which to mock me. The jokes about the Costco jeans and even the reflective stickers no longer faze me.) Cheap-skateitude notwithstanding, I have fallen a few times and it has saved my hide (literally). I usually do a backwards high-side after losing up hill momentum (and then losing the high speed reverse steering contest). I have had two issues. 1) Heat. I got sick at Corral in 100 degree temps. I was not drinking enough. 2) I had some stitching fail at the shoulder armor. Amazon offered to replace, but I was headed to Eastern Sierras, so I just stitched it up. The heat issue works in your favor when it's cold. With a thin fleece underneath and a light windbreaker overtop, you can ride some pretty cold stuff. My neighbor turned his patella into 80/20 hamburger one rainy night on the Texas Street onramp to I-8. My brother bought himself a shoulder operation in a .02MPH quad tip over. Those kinds of things have made me a firm believer in armor (and handguards). Next I plan to try motorcycle boots.

We rode Kernan both ways about 3 weeks ago. I think the rocks are multiplying. I was exhausted to start, and by the time we met the rest of our group at the campground, my quads were done. So I did another 30 miles in the canyon, then back up Kernan - some of my ugliest riding ever. Encountered a couple sets of quads towing each other on Bear Valley. They didn't seem to care much about keeping to the right. I never ride on weekends.

He left his gear (which appeared brand new) on the trail?? Maybe to climb a peak for cell service? Hmmm. Guess he could have fallen or been attacked by a cat or snake. Seems bad guys would have taken his gear. My buddy was just telling me how awesome the BP trackers are. If they can't find him, he's probably not there. Plus they should have a record of his phone activity.

Agh. This was my chance to ride with you guys. We are going to Corral instead. Majority rules.

Looks like about 7 miles from Pio Pico. Look for a bunker on the right, just after that turn right on the old driveway. You'll see 4 or 5 boulders lined up to keep cars out. Along the way, you'll also see a small sign on the right that says "bunkers."

Launched from Pio Pico and did about 42 miles. Got pretty close to the border. Talked with some nice BP dudes. Rode like a spaz. Crashed in a backwards-slidey-highside-in-the-rocks. My armor protected me (for the most part). My bike made it through a ton of rocks even though I could not pick a decent line. Saw San Clemente and Catalina Islands. Got a rear flat (fix-a-flat gave out). My 606 made it back to the truck flat. Had lots of fun. Middle Son also took a spill.

Unbelievable. This would be such a cool sport to get little kids started on.

Where'd you guys start? Looks awesome.

This looks awesome. But it reminded me of a question I have every time I watch a BDR or Touratech video: Why do these guys never sit down?
