  1. Pioneer mail is on the east side of Sunrise. If you look on Google maps it looks like the driveway and parking lot are actually on the same old road that the viewpoint is on; so if you were to continue past the barricade up top where you took the photo, it would dump you out in pioneer mail. (I wonder if that's legal.)
  2. I couldn't quite tell how bad it was down in there, the gate was closed. It definitely skirted the perimeter, but I don't recall it being really burnt right at the parking area. They weren't letting anyone stop along the road, and most of the parking areas were taped off or still full of trucks from the fire crews mopping up. Looking again at your photo from Kwaymii Pt. (sp?) it looks like you can see the entrance to Pioneer Mail; it does look like it is gone. Before I got my bike I would drop my boys off in Pine Valley, spend the day at Laguna campground, then pick them up at Pioneer Mail when they were done riding. Fun times. I hate fire.
  3. Good ride! Is Pioneer Mail toast?

    Doohoohuude!!! Mucho, much, many righteousness!!
  5. Saw on FB that USFS says Pine Creek, Deer Park, etc., is still closed due to the fire. Wanted to ride up that way and check out Laguna. Glad they got control of it; love it up there.
  6. That is my dream ride. Awesome. Thanks for posting that!

  13. Dream trip!! Thanks again for posting these pics and video.
  14. Hi Mimi, Then you know the trail. That photo was at the end of the trail. I am afraid of heights, so edging along that rock-strewn ledge was pretty sketchy. We basically tractor crawled the whole way. I got stabbed by a few Yuccas because I tried to hug the inside rather than risk falling down the mountain, but it was worth it. Showed my wife the GoPro vid when we got home; that fisheye setting makes it look like you are on Everest. She did not dig it. Found another mine online today; ready to go back.
  15. In the mid 1970's my buddy and I camped in Pine Valley and rode all over Noble Canyon and Mt. Laguna. (As kids we did not know that that PCT and Cuyamaca Rancho State Park were off limits, so we really covered some territory). At that time there was still a mining operation as well as cattle in the canyon. Mining in Pine Valley Yesterday my boys and I located my old campsite as well as three retired gold mines. We spent 5 hours and only covered 36 miles. Great fun.
  16. WOW!! This is incredible; thanks so much for posting!

    My Riding Buddies

Well, Ben got into solo fingerstyle at about age 13 (Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmmanuel). That guitar case with the "fragile" stickers was given to Ben by Tommy when they met back in 2005. Then later at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society convention they were introduced to Gypsy Jazz and Franco American Swing (Django Reinhardt). So they do a lot of old swing and pop tunes from the 1930-40s. Plus Ben knows a ton of Chet stuff and he's written 40 or 50 fingerstyle tunes. Ben has some older videos on Youtube; you can Google Ben Owens guitar. Don't think he has uploaded any recent stuff. (He just finished a Master's degree). Ben rides an XR250L, Jameson (rhythm) an XR200r, and Joseph (drums) a TTR250. It's been a fun ride. Jamming with Tommy. Solo On the street with Mark O'Connor.

    Ground Squirrel Infestation

This thread reminded me to set my squirrel trap. We were on the way down to the field when Mona spotted this guy; he was too far from home base. He did manage to get in one good lick - a small puncture just below her right eye. I gobbed it with Neosporin. She is a great dog; two days ago she alerted us to a homeless guy camped at the back of the field. He had taken the liberty of dismantling and painting an old bicycle which had been leaning against our equipment shed. Mona stood her ground and barked until a family member came. Man's best friend.

    Ground Squirrel Infestation

I planted six Mulberry trees one spring and learned the hard way that young squirrels love to eat the leaves and tender shoots. Found this baby online and trapped 120 in one summer. A guy in Lakeside sells a cheap, Chinese knockoff - don't be fooled. http://www.thetrapmaker.com/bfoxtrappic.htm#blackfox
  23. I really do need to find a solution for my turn signal problem. This particular design wants to vibrate loose. Blue thread locker just ate this one alive. My bike has no battery so I'm not sure if I can run LED's. Is there a slick, cheap solution?

    Loctite Melts Plastic

So, how long have you been with NASA? Thanks. I never would have thought of that. Based on your idea I did something similar but way less cool. Hope it lasts a few paychecks! And I moved it out of the kick zone.
