  1. i was talking with a couple car guys, and they both said if the plugs are getting a bit more electricity, they make a better spark?

If the stator is failing, the bike will run like crap until it kills the battery and then it won’t run at all.  So, maybe?

i know all about the stator, don't you remember my panicked call to you during our nocal trip last year?

    thanks for the replies.

  2. I replaced my stock, shunt-type r/r with an aftermarket, series type. I test rode this afternoon and I’d swear it felt like it had a little more ooomph (I think I spelled that right). My question is, am I imagining things, or can improved electrics make the bike a bit livelier?

Having all of the other riders just leave says a lot about that group. Those are not the type of people I would want to ride with!

that part struck me as odd also. with friends like those...

Ha ha...you should see what it's like for me when I'm on my work bike. People will start to wave at me, then realize I'm a motor cop, and pull their hand back really quick and try to act cool like no way are they waving at a motor cop.

i've done that... do you wave back when working?

    best regards,

    johnnyg

  5. i'll wave to most everyone, but i always take it back when it's a scooter... and waving in corners is fun!

  6. thanks for the replies... like tom said, it's gonna be a one-time use kinda thing. i'll prolly just end up buying one, so keep your eyes peeled for a flywheel tool up for sale in a week or two.

    best regards,

  7. hi all,

i'm hoping someone here has an lc4 flywheel puller in their toolbox i could use to replace the starter sprag on my '03 640. your choice of beverage (within reason, of course... i'm not prepared to buy someone a bottle of '61 chateau le fit) and my undying gratitude will be your reward.

Oh, one of the things we were BSing about was having a top of the mountain BBQ at sunset next month.  Between four or five of us we could bring a small BBQ, charcoal, hot dogs, buns, condiments, beverages, etc.  What does the collective think of this idea?  I've been considering it for quite a while, but don't want to make it happen unless we get a bit larger turnout.  I will pick a date and make a post, if it looks good it's going to happen!

that's a great idea, any chance it could be on a wed thru sun evening? i'd be in...

    best regards,

Gophers look similar to rattlesnakes (and get mistaken for them often) so they are usually pretty recognizable.  Rosy's are native (and protected) but not often seen.  They are a very docile snake and are not prone to biting.

Mom and Dad used to buy me snakes for Christmas presents when I was young (starting around 10 yo) and although I have not had any for many years they still intrigue me.  If my guess is right you saw something kinda special!  Good for you for letting it mosey along!

bruce, i'll be honest, they give me the willies... i love seeing them, but i never feel the need to hold a wild one. i have held a captive ball python, and was really comfortable with it. i guess i don't know how to "read" a snake's movements to feel confident enough to handle a larger wild specimen, even though they're non-venomous. i prolly watch too many youtube fail videos.

Yes, keep the anger in check.  Don't let some A**hole steal your joy.  Get his plate if you can but it's usually quite easy to maneuver far far away from idiots like that.

kelly, i typically don't let wacky people disrupt my life... i'm all too aware who would lose in a car/bike battle. disengage as quickly as is safely possible.

  10. i've never been to otay mountain, so today was the day! not too many photos, but you all know what it looks like.

i made my way from encinitas through poway to 67 to lakeside. i didn't have it mapped but i knew the general direction... sure enough, there's otay lakes rd! huzzah! i asked the lady in the convenience store at the bottom of the dirt road (at the entrance to the pio pico campground) if they had any maps of the area, but they didn't. she told me that going east from doghouse junction was gated, so i followed the road south and west and ended at the juvenile lock-up. as i continued south from dh junction, i took the first couple of left hand spurs... the second one was a little pucker-y going down the back side to the turn-around. going back up was fun -- pick clean lines and don't lose momentum.

    saw a pretty snake.

i had an encounter on 805 in chula vista on my way back north. i never engage people who want to "race", and i'm happy to let others "win" if it gives me space between me and that guy in the american muscle/pimped four-banger/giant diesel pickup/euro bling vehicle. i do try to move forward through traffic though, and do so without causing others to alter their course or speed. a merging bmw x-series crossed 3 lanes into my lane, while i was even with the rear side door. i braked and swerved, dropping behind him by a few car-lengths and calming my anger. at the next inch-worming of traffic i began to split and he pinches over to the right to close the gap on me. my anger was checked when i realized the level of his aggression. a gap opened and i moved from behind him and over two lanes to the right and pass the group he's slowing with. i moved forward through a few more clusters of cars to put some distance between us, and kept a keen eye on my mirrors for the next few miles. be safe out there.

    best regards,

I have nothing to add about the status of the trail, but it sounds like a fun trip and I have been wanting to check it out.

tom, thanks for the response... you'll be getting a text within the next month or so...

I've ridden Bradshaw a few times and it is always smooth and graded. Easy to get going pretty fast and then have a sharp turn appear out of now where. There may be some small sections of soft stuff, but nothing to worry about. I've only ridden small stretches of The Mohave Trail, so not much help there. I have heard that there are some long stretches of deep sand. You will likely get better, more detailed info from the folks here.

amgems, thanks for chiming in... it's great to get whatever info you can share about the routes.

The last time I was on Bradshaw 6 weeks ago, the west end of it that is down in the actual wash was a mess from all the Razors. We had several miles of axle deep washboard (razor bumps) that will shake the fillings out of your teeth. It's horrible, but probably dooable for an intermediate rider on a tiger with decent tires. Mojave Trail should be no trouble for you with exception to the west end in Afton Canyon where it can be very soft with several miles of Sand. The other question mark are the water crossings west of Afton Canyon. The last time I went through the one nearest the campground it went over my seat, time before that it was nearly dry. I've had to wade across that crossing more than once to rescue drowned bikes. I would call the NPS to find out if the trail closure on the east end near the fort has been lifted since it washed out last season. Great route overall, have fun!

thanks for the detailed info hotrod, i'll check out the areas you mentioned in google earth to figure out a work-around.

I sold my place in parker last year but I use to ride there via the bradshaw at least 30 times. the  beginning has rocks and very soft sand but after that your ok. done it on a klr, super ten, dl 1000  think youll be ok

thanks for the vote of confidence alyeska...

i appreciate all y'all's input. i'm itching to go burn some gas.

  12. hi all,

i ride a girly tiger ('06 955i) and would like to make a 3-4 day camping loop, going east on the bradshaw trail, then returning on mojave road. how sandy/technical are these roads? tires are mitas e07's, i'd consider myself an intermediate-lite rider, and i prefer moving to dabbing.

any other unpaved-but-a-stock-rav4-could-do-it route suggestions are welcome.

    best regards,

    john

Yup, always closed but never locked. It is a PUBLIC road. There are a couple land owners that like to make it LOOKED like it's a locked gate so that people that don't know better, are intimidated to enter and just go away. I have talked to the guy that owns the house and big property just passed the second gate a couple of times. He has always been polite and interesting to talk to. His father homesteaded the property many years ago.

lb, thanks for the info, especially the last bit. mum's the word!

  14. hi all,

all this week, i've been like a kid in detention, forlornly looking out the window at his friends on the playground. i have tried to make my schedule work to go on this excursion with you, but it's just not happening for me. i'll just have to watch from a distance, hearing your peals of joy and laughter, and turn slowly back to my tasks, dejectedly cursing my plight...

i hope you all have a great trip, keep the rubber side down.

    best regards,

    johnnyg
