  3. gotta love them hipsters - great video! that backpack looks bomber. quick chrome bag story: i once used a friend's chrome messenger bag while riding my fj1200. i went to adjust my jacket zipper and inadvertently hit the strap buckle release (they use auto seatbelt buckles). the waist strap was still attached around me, but the two halves of the shoulder strap flopped down on either side of the bike behind me, dangerously close to the chain and rear wheel. i stopped quickly and safely, but that made me pucker for sure. ride safe y'all! johnnyg
  4. hope you all had a fun ride... i had to work. thomas mountain is one of my favorite areas to ride. post up pics if you got any!

    Highway Dirt Bikes Mirrors

i put the hdb guards/mirrors on my 640adv after breaking a stock mirror off in a crash... the mounting hardware of the mirror has a shallow ball/socket-type interface, and in combination with the hinging part of the mirror and the pivoting around the mounting bolt, there's a good amount of adjustability. also, the mirror surface is slightly convex, for a wider area reflected, but not so much that things become unrecognizable. the mirrors stay where you put them and the guards are really stout. all in all, it's a great set-up. i hope this helps. regards, johnnyg
  11. thanks for letting me tag along for a bit... it's nice to be back on the bike.
  12. like the title says, ramona-anza and on toward idylwild, trying to ride as much dirt as possible. packards at 7, stands up by 7:30. i'd like to ride it as an out and back, so my turnaround point is wherever i am at 11:30-noon. having trouble getting tracks into my garmin, so i'll be winging it with paper maps. post up if interested, otherwise i'll skip the packards stop. happy new year! johnnyg
  13. having trouble loading photos, so this rr might seem a bit bland... we had 7 riders for our little outing -- sean, dave, loren, ryan, arnie, eric, and me (sorry i don't remember respective screen names). big thanks to arnie for leading, both the navigation and pace. we left packards at 7:30, headed out black cyn to mesa grande, past the hideout to warner springs to ride lost valley/puerta la cruz/cooper cienega to anza. we were at a gas/rest stop in anza by 11:30, where a few of the crew decided to slab it home. we all rode out to the bautista rd trailhead, where the group split. eric, loren and myself continued on up to rouse ridge, south over thomas mtn, and back out to 74 to 371 to anza again. from there, we reversed our tracks -- cooper cienega/puerta la cruz/lost valley, warner springs. eric and loren continued on 79 to santa ysabel, and i took mesa grande/black cyn back to ramona, stopped for an ice cream, then down the hill to encinitas. my garmin read 231 miles, 6:36 ride time. thanks to everyone who participated, i had a really fun ride and i hope you did too! regards, johnnyg p.s. - i'll keep working on posting the photos...
  14. vanjoosten, it's a go. see you at packard's at 7.

    any collectors out there?

i wish i had the ca$h to throw around... http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/mcy/4271126594.html
  16. arnie, that was my planned route, minus palomar divide... i'm not married to that plan though if time allows for an alternate return route. will you be joining in? trophyhunter, thanks for your input... i've never ridden lost valley/puerta la cruz/cooper cienega, so i'm stoked to ride something new. lurkers, my riding style is slow-ish, but steady (i'm on a '03 640 adv) and i'm hoping to cover some miles to help me get back into riding shape. my ultimate goal for riding this route is to be able to ride all of the bee canyon area too, lunch in idylwild, then retrace my tracks to go home -- i like the high dirt/slab ratio! thanks for your interest... hope to see you tomorrow! regards, johnnyg

  20. i'd be happy to help out wherever needed.
  21. hi all, i have an '03 640adv with almost 30k mi on it. on my last ride, my hydraulic clutch began fading as my ride went on (of course it started when i was the furthest from home). at first it seemed to happen only at higher speeds (>50mph), and would feel normal after i slowed -- but then the fade returned, eventually at any speed. i got onto i-8w from s-2, to get myself home with the fewest number of shifts possible, and near the top of the climb my motor cut out and my rear wheel locked up. at 70mph. i pulled the clutch lever, but to no avail. i skidded over to the breakdown lane (it's an impressive distance, btw -- look for the skid mark if you get out that way), checked my shorts, and got the bike into neutral and... it wouldn't start. turned over fine, but wouldn't catch. pushed it the last bit uphill and over to coast down to the jacumba exit where i waited for my wife to pick me up. i inspected the bike at home and took note of a few things: -- oil on the motor around where the clutch cable enters the gearbox (rh side, above sprocket); -- oil under the crank case, along the seam, just enough to hold dirt; -- oil weeping around the shift lever/kick start shaft where it enters the gearbox; -- when i cycle the kick starter a few times (slowly), i'm not sure i'm getting enough resistance (compression), though i believe i can feel when it's at the compression stroke. i'm not certain b/c i never use the kick start and haven't developed an accurate feel for it. i suppose i could compare cycling the kickstart with the decomp lever pulled vs not pulled (will try that tomorrow). my initial thoughts are that gearbox trouble and engine trouble are two separate issues... but i'm new to this and wouldn't be surprised if i'm overlooking something. i would like to repair the bike myself, if possible, but am stumped at exactly where to begin the engine diagnosis. i know i need to check for spark and fuel delivery, but after that... what? is it possible i ruined my motor? when it turns over, i don't hear any new noises joining the usual racket that happens with an lc4, but as i mentioned, my experience is limited... does anyone out there have any insights they can offer regarding these bikes, with this mileage, and these symptoms (or any combination thereof)? i sure hope i didn't kill my bike -- i'm kinda worried! thanks in advance, johnnyg
