Adventure Bike Truth: Marketing vs Reality
tntmo replied to Goofy Footer's topic in What Bike to Ride
I thought that looked like a familiar video. First comment I saw was some idiot named "Tom's Tinkering and Adventures" going on about selling a Super Tenere for a KTM 690. -
Flat Track Has Jumps! Who Knew?

TT is similar to flat track, but like Mimi said it has differences. I’ve never been to one. Would be cool, On Any Sunday vibes. -

I have gone to a few of those events, good to give back a bit. Hopefully next time we get more SDAR representation. -
How KTM came to rule the off road scene
tntmo replied to tntmo's topic in Articles, Movies, Videos, DS/ ADV Related
Yes, and I had the WR which had a heavier flywheel....probably helped with the flameout issues? If I had kept the TE and gone through the engine, a counter balancer would have been a no brainer. I suppose it saved a few ounces and added .5 horsepower, all about the spec sheets at some point. I did a lot of riding on my Husky, the close ratio transmission was probably my biggest issue, it was likely a better woods bike than a desert machine but being a dual sport it should have had a wide ratio. I'm interested to see the changes over the next decade or two. -

I had a 99 WR400F that seemed to be the exact opposite of everything you said. It started 1-2 kicks cold, one kick when hot. Never had the hot stall/flameout (my TE450 was terrible for that) and was a super reliable machine. I got caught up in everyone else having electric start/FI bikes and got the Husky 450....it was a pretty good bike but had lots of annoying things about it that didn't work for me, even though I kept the bike several years and it never left me stranded. Vibration, close ratio gearbox, oil leaking everywhere, at least it ran pretty good. I had a 2006 WR450F at the same time, it also was a great bike and was lighter than the Husky. Not sure where your "weighed a ton" remark is coming from? Sure am glad the roots were laid down for all this current golden age of motorcycling we're living in. The irony is not lost on me about our complaints about these amazing machines. First world problems, indeed! -

The four stroke is most of the two wheel off road scene now. They are probably leading the remaining two stroke scene as well, I think Yamaha is the only Japanese 250 2T remaining? -
I love the ADVrider Cannonball threads, where people cross the USA on pre 1933 motorcycles.

A sub three hour marathon is very respectable, I may be able to do it if I changed my diet of beer, ice cream and candy and also trained. Sounds like something that I will never do. I’ve never ridden a motorcycle older than 1960’s models. Would like to take a spin on one of those early models.

I did tell family members that I was going to try to visit again this year, and I have come in second place in the local 5k three times.....I need to beat that guy!

Might be a fun event to go watch the auction live? I'll only bring a small portion of my personal fortune along, can't buy too many bikes.

I have motorcycles that I paid less for! -
I could model it like the Green Weenie above, but don't know that I can pull it off as nicely.

I have a silk liner for my bag, I use it when it’s really hot as a thin blanket or when it’s really cold to add warmth. Low 20’s is the coldest I’ve camped.

That's golden about losing the foot peg in Death Valley, the reason I mentioned it is because one of our group did the exact same thing during the Noob's Rally! On many bikes you can remove the shift shaft from the right hand side after removing the clutch and assorted items. Not all bikes are set up like that, I don't thing I have messed with a KLR transmission but I'm available to take a look if you want. And to the topic of this thread, definitely see about the REI "parking lot sale" if they still do that. My wife picked up so much good stuff at the one she went to about ten years ago that I still haven't even used some of it...but we obviously needed it!

And foot peg bolts.
-
I will see if they are available on Kodi.

Justin has it. I’m sure if he decides to pass it along I will be first on the list.

DR350 is an underrated bike, old school compared to the new bikes but more than capable of any BDR or dual sport event. I have owned several, never know if my old DR435 may come back?

Just pay your man servant to kick start it while you look down upon him through your monocle. -

Sure is nice to have that kick starter. I have had FI issues in the past, but have definitely had more battery issues. -
I think it would be nice to have some spares, build the best bike you can and keep whatever is worth holding on to. Wheels and such? Sell parts, they always get more than an entire bike does. I would love to put a XR250 style engine in a modern chassis, that 450 would be a good candidate.
