Second Annual Noob Overnight Dual Sport Camping Trip: Nov 4-5
tntmo replied to tntmo's topic in Informal Local Rides & Who's Going Riding!
I will have to see if they can set some aside for us again if we get enough interest. I’m probably going to try out the Touratech aluminum boxes I snagged for my 690. -
I like the old KLR, it has some common issues but after you get it sorted it can take you around the world. And yes, if it breaks down you can fix it with a rock and then eat a trail hot dog! Welcome to the group, see ya on the trail.

I was thinking if anyone was interested in going but not riding, we could get a spot. Firewood transport is good too. -

I’m also not against anyone riding 500 miles of single track and then showing up at camp, doesn’t matter to me. Just trying to get the band back together. -

Same route, very Noob friendly. I use map and compass, if anyone wants a GPX file I’m not the guy for that. -

Ahhh, I knew something else was going on! Well, my weekend dates are pretty booked so it was this one or none. I’m sure we’ll get a few people. Have fun at the rally. -

The date for the ride/event is in the thread title and in the body of the first post. I linked last years ride as an example, guess that fooled a couple of you. I guess it's pretty easy to get confused, it's a common state I'm in. 😁 -

That’s good too, join in for the ride. Sunday can be more exploring too, going north from the camp site is some good stuff that can take you up to Idylwild, Thomas Mountain, etc. -

I could bring my Trail 90, Team Small CC’s! -
I paid a bit of attention to the auction. No bargains, that's for sure!

I just saw your motorcycle on the base. I helped stand up The Magicians.

Cool bike, I don't know if we have any other Pan America owners here but we have plenty of big bike owners and rides that are big bike capable. Welcome to the group, see ya on the trail.

Gortex Jacket or Cordura with Rain Suit
tntmo replied to Goofy Footer's topic in Personal & Riding Gear
If I had a bomb strapped to my genitals that was set off by rain water and had to choose between riding 500 rainy miles in a GoreTex suit or a motorcycle rain suit (my current one is Nelson Rigg) I'd first of all question why I had a bomb strapped to my genitals. Then I'd put on the Nelson Rigg rain suit and stay dry from rain water. I've ridden thousands of miles wearing both kinds of setups. For light rain or a short ride the Gore Tex stuff works fine. If you're riding in heavy rain for days and don't want rain to soak through, the only thing that has worked for me is a decent rain suit. Unfortunately, this is not a fantasy world so nothing is perfect. Breathable fabric will eventually breath in the wrong direction and water will get through. Non breathable fabric won't let sweat out so you're going to be damp from that. Best option for staying dry? Stay home and watch motorcycle videos. Yeah....I'd go with either of the other choices. -
My buddy had his front wheel fail with this setup on his Africa Twin after about 5000 miles. Could have been bad prep, could have been anything.

Registration of Small Displacement Dirt Bikes for OHV, BLM & State Parks (Green Stickers vs Plates)
tntmo replied to Koonzee's topic in Open Discussion
I have had rangers check registration at Ocotillo Wells, but only because other members of my party were bringing attention to themselves. But yes, all small bikes are supposed to have it. 17 years…it may be out of the system. If the seller is cooperative you could go to a registration place together to check? There is also OHV riding areas on BLM land in Painted Gorge, Plaster City, Superstition, etc. Less crowded/crazy than OW but no facilities like the bathrooms, shade structures, trash cans, etc -
I've been retired almost six years, I love naps!

All I saw were some awesome motorcycles riding that waterfall trail, not a Starbucks in sight. Sorry, buddy. So far the score is Ninja 250ADV - 1, GermanSnob 1250 - 0.
-
The video just proves that my idea has merit. The Ninja 250 is very likely going to dominate the off road scene soon.

990, so fuel injection? Can you hear the fuel pump cycling when you turn the key on? My simple test is to remove the air filter, spray some carburetor cleaner in the throttle body and see if it fires up for a second. If it does, pretty much guarantees that it’s a fuel system issue. Message me if you want, I can get it going for you.

I have a belt sander, could just do some foot adjustments?

I don't have any experience with this particular bolt, but I hate to say this: Paul Bowers is right. A thread chaser will work great in this situation. If you have a tap, it can be used to clean threads but a thread chaser is the best tool. Even an old bolt that has had a hacksaw run across the threads works awesome if you're into farm solutions. I think the nut over the end of the threads sounds like a pretty good way to help protect the threads. The Helicoil vs TimeSert debate is not necessary yet. One is not really better than the other, they both have their time and place. Helicoils are used extensively throughout aviation, which tells me that they are trusted in extreme situations.

You'd have to take a cylinder off as well, and it would still be considered a big bike at that point.
