  1. It's been 3.5 years since the last time. I've been itching to get up there and ride it again. I'd like to make a plan for April or early May. Not many intermediate riders could do this one. Advanced and above singletrack riders apply within.

    The Rincon Trail Itch

I haven't been on, or started, my bike since March. It's too hot in the lowlands now. I'll follow up again later this summer for a ride in Sept or Oct.
  3. At the riding clinic the question was posed to Graham Jarvis and he explained you can't get the feel and control you need to be competitive with an auto clutch, but then he continued that he'd never used one. I think I read or saw another comment from a different top pro to the same effect.
  4. The mix up was a little annoying. Billy Bolt and Graham do look strikingly similar and I think they mixed those two the most. The other was Jonny Walker and Cody Webb who are KTM teammates. Maybe next year they'll put bigger numbers on the plates. It was a good race. Nice seeing the new winner on the podium and Graham coming back. Maybe next year we'll see Cody up top.
  5. Perfect. I was looking for something to do on my Oakland layover.

  7. Here's my comment message if anyone would want to copy and paste. Only 5 more days to submit comments. Dear Secretary Zinke,Regarding the public lands designations up for review the closest to me is the Giant Sequoia Monument. There are many reasons why the 327,769 acre Giant Sequoia Monument Proclamation was a bad idea. A few examples of why I believe this to be;-It eliminated many forms of recreation such as motorized trail riding and snowmobiling. Sugarloaf Village was a historic winter recreation area surrounded by snowmobile trails. Sugarloaf Village is entirely enclosed in the monument area. The designation immediately closed all the trails and deestroyed the property values of the houses in the village. There are no longer business open in the village. Only empty stores. There was no public process or Congressional approval. The 327,769 acre area is far larger than needed to protect the Giant Sequoia Groves. The Giant Sequoia should have and need to be protected. However, an area nearly half the size of Rhode Island does not.It eliminated much needed active management to reduce fuels and promote forest health thereby putting the Giant Sequoia Groves, the forest, and local homeowners and business at risk of catastrophic fire. Historic wildfire management practices have left the western forests unhealthy and full of fuel. We now need to remove to manage the forest to prevent the small routine wildfires from descimating the entire forest, including the Giant Sequioas the monument designation was intended to protect. Please consider these reasons for all or any of the areas up for review. Public lands should be open for the public to enjoy. Thank you for your consideration,

Run It or Replace It ?

I don't see cord showing. Why even ask?
  10. Good fun. I just got an email from Motoventures that they're selling off some of the older bikes. There's an older Sherco that is tempting me. I don't ride any of my bikes enough so I have to resist.

Maybe if we point the finger say, this is what happens when you close the land and riding areas. We used to stay in the deserts and mountains but you closed it. Give us the boondocks and we'll leave the cities.

    The Rincon Trail Itch

I caught a Facebook conversation and it sounds like a crew with chainsaws is heading up Rincon this weekend. That means next weekend might be time to attack.
  13. Build it, enjoy it, share it with your buddies. I'd enjoy practing on it at Corral or McCain.

Hi Don! Good to hear from you again. I'll get in touch the next time I'm thinking about a road trip. I heard that the Greenhorns North of 155 will be closed until next year. That last fire up there really scorched Portuguese Pass. We may have to do Piute trips this summer.

Yeah. Maybe pair that up with another visit to Flagstaff.
  18. I won't buy one, but glad to see they are finally coming to market. http://racerxonline.com/2017/03/15/fuel-injected-ktm-two-strokes-coming-in-2018 KTM just dropped an emissions-friendly bomb in a press release today, stating that fuel-injection technology is ready for two-strokes, and the 2018 250EXC and 300EXC bikes will come equipped with it. Yes, the EXC bikes represent KTM's enduro range, so no word yet on how this would impact the 250SX two-stroke motocross bike, but it still represents a major step forward for the pre-mix motors. Well, actually, the new Transfer Port Injection (TPI) eliminates the need for pre-mixing of gas and oil altogether. More importantly, it drastically reduces emissions and fuel consumption. This is key because in some global markets, KTM still sells street-legal 250 and 300 two-stroke dual sports, and this new EFI unit allows those bikes to meet the very strict Euro 4 emission standards. Over here, two-strokes don't qualify as road legal already, but some states, like California, do require emissions testing to be legal for use on public off-road land. That only impacts a select part of the U.S. dirt bike market, but we have to believe the technology holds major potential benefits in a wide variety of ways. Today's press release says more information will be available during the bike's worldwide launch on May 15. In an recent interview with Europe's Enduro21.com magazine, Joachim Sauer, the KTM product marketing manager, says the bikes have been tuned to perform in a manner similar to a carbureted bike, but testing has confirmed that they respond crisply, without hesitation, and of course without any need for jetting changes. You can read the full PR below: KTM is pleased to mark a major global milestone by announcing that it will unveil the world’s first serial production fuel injection 2-stroke Enduro machines at an official launch this coming May. The KTM 250 EXC TPI and KTM 300 EXC TPI models will be introduced to the global market as part of the model year 2018 lineup, while the 250 XC-W TPI model will be introduced to the U.S. and Canadian markets. The Austrian manufacturer is well-known for its revolutionary advancements in technology and now the game-changer is finally here with 2-stroke fuel injection Enduro models being launched as part of the 2018 EXC range. With KTM’s unwavering commitment to being at the very forefront of offroad motorcycle sport, in which the orange brand has achieved many championship wins over the years, the latest, exciting development in technology has come to fruition. It has been no secret that KTM’s Research and Development department in Mattighofen, Austria has been developing this technology, which offers considerable benefits over carbureted models including drastically reduced fuel consumption while also no-longer having the need to pre-mix fuel or alter the machines’ jetting. Not only that, the new 2-stroke TPI models offer a completely new experience in terms of power delivery and rideability, which once again demonstrates KTM’s commitment to its offroad roots, continuing on from the all-new generation of Enduro machines released last year. As market leaders in this segment, KTM believes the new 2-stroke fuel injection technology, known as TPI (Transfer Port Injection), is revolutionary. More information will be available during the international media launch, which begins on May 15, 2017. “This is an incredibly exciting development for KTM. We have been developing 2-stroke fuel injection for some time, and our goal was to create competitive motorcycles with all the benefits of fuel injection, while fitting into our READY TO RACE mantra. There has been extensive testing and considerations for our Research and Development team to take into account during this process, so we are very motivated by this next step and world first in technology, as we take a major step forward in this segment. We are certainly looking forward to unveiling the new 2018 KTM 250 EXC TPI and KTM 300 EXC TPI machines in May. In Europe the bikes will arrive at the dealer floors in early summer. In the USA and Canada, the new 2018 KTM 250 XC-W TPI will be available in very limited quantities in late fall,” said Joachim Sauer, KTM Product Marketing Manager.

I've got my eye on a HI Power Cycles Typhoon. I might buy one with the money I didn't have to pay in taxes.
  25. As part of my Beach to River ride we rode from Calexico to Yuma on mostly dirt roads. From Calexico headed east on Birch Rd; Birch will curve off to the Northeast, stay straight east on the farm road until you get to the canal. Follow the canal southeast to Anza Rd. Cross the canal and then get bank on the canal road and ride the north side of the canal until you get to the hydro dam with the houses (you're following on Google maps right?). From there take the power line road until Gordon Well area. Get lunch at Duner's Diner. Then ride the north side of the canal or edge of the dunes to Ogilby Rd. Cross Ogilby and pick up the power line Rd again. That will take you to Sidewinder Rd where you'll cross I-8 and get gas.
