FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AMA Racing Vintage National Dirt Track Championship Series will kick off during Bike Week

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to announce that the AMA Racing Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series is set to kick off during Daytona Beach Bike Week, March 5-8.

"Bike Week is a great location to start our second year of national championship series competition in vintage dirt track," said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. "The history of the AMA's involvement in the sport dates to the original factory Class-A racing in the 1920s and really took off during the Class-C production-based format that continues today.

"The AMA is excited to continue to recognize the dirt-track vintage racing community on the national stage," Bromley added.

The AMA Racing Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series recognizes national champions in period-correct classes that reflect the storied history of AMA dirt-track competition. Class winners are honored at the AMA Racing Championship Banquet, which recognizes national champions in all amateur racing disciplines.

Class rules and equipment regulations, updated and improved for 2011, are available at AMARacing.com > National Championship Series > AMA Racing Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series. The full series schedule is below.

Vintage racing expert Don Miller, owner of MetroRacing.com, is the technical advisor of the AMA Racing Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series. Miller said that his goal is to field motorcycles that capture the nostalgia of the past amid the excitement of a modern meet, while avoiding non-traditional modifications that violate the spirit of vintage competition.

"Year two as the AMA vintage dirt track technical advisor is on its way, and I couldn't be more excited," Miller said. "The series fared well for its first year and can do nothing but gain speed. Attendees and enthusiasts gave us some good feedback, and the rules were adjusted so every one can come out and race with us. Season two is going to be great!"

The first four rounds of the 2011 AMA Racing Vintage National Dirt Track Championship Series run in conjunction with the AMA Racing Winter Dirt Track National Championship Series, which features amateur dirt-track racing on modern motorcycles. The fifth round of the AMA Racing Winter Dirt Track National Championship Series, a TT event held at Ocala Micro Speedway in Ocala, Fla., on March 9, will not include the vintage series.

Following Bike Week, the 14-round series travels through Wisconsin, New York, Ohio and Illinois before the finale in Cuddebackville, N.Y., on Sept. 17.
