Beezzz 6 Posted May 20, 2011 The cottonwood trees (only) were covered in caterpillar nests. The caterpillars striped the trees of ALL of their leaves on some trees. There was an invasion of millions covering every surface of our tent and campground. The floor of the valley had caterpillars every 6 feet and they were on a mission to climb anything and nest. They nested 100 per night on the exterior of our tent. They nested on our bikes and truck. Some made the trip back to SD unnoticed in the grooves of the motorcycle tires and truck suspension. Once nested, they cocooned over night. Riding on Hwy 9 east out of the south park through tunnels. Climbers were on the cliff wall on right side when we drove by.
