  1. I'm sure ShocknAwe will post pictures and video but here's an overview from my perspective. My son-in-law and I found the day use area thanks to BS's directions and discovered it was a bit cooler than expected. We arrived early so a quick trip around an unfamiliar area was in order.

The variety of topography and surfaces made the initial ride and all day interesting. From hard pack to sandy banked switchbacks combined with moderate elevation changes kept the entertainment value up. We met Shock and neighbor Rachel and took the Wounded Knee outer loop while Todd was offloading. Rachel was on her fourth trip to the dirt (ever) on a newly purchased Yamaha XT225. A great bike for her and she improved all day. Very friendly and happy to be in the sun, on the dirt.

Shock & I traded sweep throughout the day with lead changing hands as well. No mishaps and nothing but smiles at the end. Successful in my book.

Brian (Son-in-Law) and I made a decision to try Salsa Lynda on the way out (blink) of Blvd. A menu full of Mexican food led me to order what I was in the mood for. A cheeseburger & fries. Frozen pattie and all. Surprisingly good and the "get ur own chips and salsa" bar stemmed the hunger 'til the food arrived.

    A fun ride, friendly group.

  2. Gbus Crisis and I headed a little East & South from Lake Jennings park & ride. Sorry you couldn't make it Joe. Mostly graded dirt road with views forever. Had one "hmmmm, this looks familiar" moment when we rode in a complete circle. There, I said it.

My first dirt with the DL650....the additional 200 lbs over my WR is VERY noticeable. Especially when there's 5.8 gallons up top. The ride went well with both bikes upright all day. Had a giant sandwich at the Bravo Cafe (94-Campo & Steele Canyon) next to the Greek Sombrero. Good food and not shy on the quantity.

  3. I have an '05 DL650 and it hasn't hit dirt yet. There are a lot of them that have. From all of the reading I've done, it will do what's already been covered here. Check http://stromtrooper.com/ for more info. Also, California Scientific http://www.calsci.com/ for add ons. I put a skid plate/guard combo on mine for dirt when it finally gets there. I also added a removable backrest for my wife's comfort.

The easily adjustable rear preload is nice (knob on right side) and I consistantly get 50 mpg.

I think the recently posted archived photos prove we all are spoiled and if you wanted to muscle a Strom thru stuff more easily handled by more dirt worthy equipment, you could.

  4. Nice to meet Shwinn and Chief Gunner and ??? (RSDwr maybe). It's too bad we couldn't talk and get to know each other better. The was no talking over the music. But, the band was really good I thought!

Yes, RSDWR & wife Laura. Agreed, loud but good. We left after the drunken Harley burnouts started (not long after you).

  5. Anyone else who would like to meet up and go chime in, I live down the hill in Lakeside, nice easy cruise up to Ramona to the 79 and then west on the 78...anyone want to go for a cruise Sunday and stop in at the Hideout?

I was thinking of stopping by and then contiuing down to Borrego via montezuma and then back up the mountain to Julian to either Sunrise or the 79.

    Chief,

Up for a ride. I'm in Rancho SD and can meet for a run to the Hideout. Let me know time & location.

  6. After reading all the comments on Marc's intro, I'm probably in the right place. I took a 13 year break from the dirt, starting back last season. Started with mini buggies until I rode a friends bike. Had a '06 WR450 a week later. I've been (casually) riding street for 4 years, currently on a '05 V-Strom 650.

I'm not here to win any trophies but will try and keep up (within my sanity parameters). I enjoy the scenery and a technical ride. Been riding Pine Valley/CC lately and enjoy the openness of Superstition too.

I'd like to include my family as much as possible but that will probably be reserved for desert trips or "non-tent" overnights. My oldest son (WR250) and son-in-law (DR650) will join in when the Marines aren't altering their lives.

Glad to be here and look forward to meeting anyone from this group.
