SDAR member AFRY - Arnie has passed

Arnie Fry's celebration of life will be September 30th at the Ramona Fairgrounds located at 421 Aqua lane at 2 pm. Come and celebrate the life of the man who celebrated the best of everything. Smiles and tears, stories and hugs, thoughts of the great times shared with Arnie and Christie and the friends and families who love them so. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town. Please consider supporting a positive guy who gave himself to everyone.
  2. A gaggle of DR650 riders from ADV rented a house in Ouray, CO for the week and got after some of the loops. I picked up a used kayak and tossed the fishing gear in the back. I fished my way to CO over a few days and am mixing the two while in CO. Still here but wanted to get this started before my brain locked up. View from the deck of the rental house. Fishing is outstanding! We've had trout for dinner twice. We did Engineer and Cinnamon Passes and the scenery doesn't disappoint. Moving on to Imogene Pass at 13,100 feet. A group of wheelers from TX had a BBQ going at the top and we got to join in. Moving quickly at that elevation will throw your brain off a bit. The scenery just can't be described well enough. A few more days to go.

    TPI Valve = More Air

Carbs, mixtures, elevation, etc. I live at 300' and regularly ride to 5000 - 6000. I've read enough to know the DR650 will tractor along at the higher elevations and have hosted RTW riders who say the same. With a bent toward helping the DR just a little without needle/jet changes - and with some 13,000+ elevations in my near future - I sought advice from a DR650 rider who actually lives in rarified air (7200 ft) and rides up from there. I installed the TPI Low Boy Adjustable Intake on the airbox cover today in preparation. Simple enough. Line up TPI, draw some lines, cut, mount. Adjust tension of screws to friction hold the slide. Things I did wrong: should've set it back toward the center more - ended up with one screw positioned to enter the cover seal area. This does not impact the "friction sliding" of the "sliding door" but it frustrated me. I'm usually more careful about these things. I wanted the opening to be basically parallel to the ground, thinking the door may rattle open while riding. Non-issue. The friction applied by the screws would hold it anywhere. If done again, I'd run the thing parallel to the door edge. Anyway, this adjustable opening along with the adjustable mixture screw should suffice for some high passes in the next month or two. http://thunderproducts.com/product-category/intake/air-filters/ Position, draw some lines... Dremel, trim, test fit. I put some black RTV/Adhesive around the edges after this pic Test operation with cover on. Notice the bottom left screw is missing from the TPI because I'm an idiot. I debated with myself (always a good time) about putting some sort of pull/push closing rod extending past the side panel but there's enough flexibility in it to get ur digits in there. The TPI opening sits behind the massive high velocity air intake on the panel, obviously designed for such things.

    TPI Valve = More Air

Just follow up on this after CO. Was it needed on a stock DR650 with unmolested carb/airbox - No Did it help when I opened it at 11,000 feet and rode to 13,100 - Yes The opening on the DR's airbox snorkel is about the same size as the opening on the TPI. Opening it basically doubled the air input. That was helpful at those elevations but the DR tractored up everything on other days up to 12,800, so not an absolute necessity for the bike. A worthwhile experiment/addition IMO.

So Far, So Good. CO Loops.....

Plenty of info on ADV and I have tracks if needed. Also, the area draws a lot of tourism for the local towns - good info and maps available at stores/gas stations, etc. Acclimate to the altitude (our rental was at 7700 feet) and drink lots of water.

Thx - Combo of IPhone and Nikon Coolpix. I wouldn't know how to operate anything more sophisticated.

  13. Good report. We went up there 2 weeks ago and I'll be going back through at the end of Sept. The June Lake Loop is outstanding.

    Light weight rain gear?

I've tossed my Frogg Toggs on a few times. Once just for a wind break as the temp dropped. Worked well. Can't comment on abrasion resistance. Not a budget buster. Frogg Togg I got the All Sport Rain Suit

    Do you have any regrets???

This for sure. Like giving up a ride with my son, or time with my wife on our anniversary.

    New owner of a 2016 Enduro r!

I don't have any info on the bike, but Congrats! ADVRider will most likely have a good info thread.
  18. 2 DR650's. 1 young Marine, 1 idiot. We didn't go for the ridge trail or gold..?? but we got worked. Just a guide, Dan.
  19. Good scenery! I haven't been up there in 40+ years. Maybe it's time. Hitch pin - the one holding the ball to the truck? Damn lucky. I went with a locking one after reading of those who don't want us in "their" woods stealing them to cause problems. Re the battery - I'm guessing not holding a charge as it should've been getting juice on the drive up (if hooked up that way). I got a solar trickle charger just to help a little. Solar Charger - comes with the controller built in.
  20. Great stuff. My CO loops start Aug 19 with a gaggle of mostly DR650 riders but we chose Glamping by renting a house in Ouray for the week as a base camp. Look forward to more of the story.

Bike Tech day Escondido - Sat July 22

Don - great to see a post from you. Hope all is well. We have four generations of b-days within 2 weeks in July and that celebration is happening the same day as this. Shame to miss it but upsetting 4 generations of women - including my wife - is going on my "Not Smart" list.

    New Guy in Clairemont

There's a maintenance day on the 22nd - good time to meet some folks. Welcome. Plenty of KLR and other mid-sized bikes on here. Don't hesitate to post up a ride, even if ya don't want to lead. Riders here know a lot of mild dirt to get you comfortable. I primarily ride my DR650 and need to get out more.
