  1. Always start with checking the ground connections. And on a bike with no key, that the Kill switch is clean and the contacts are open. Wiring that has rubbed or pinched can short to ground. Any fuses popped?

It is just physics, not magic.  You will get it.  😎

  2. These off-road bikes are truly amazing in what they will drive you through. That said, there is a different dynamic when you try to drive a 4-500lb bike over obstacles at low speed. In my experience with the 990, once you get out of shape on a bouncy track, it is quite hard to save the day. It is going down and you just need to get out of the way. Also, these 60/40 bikes have different geometry which are more prone to knifing the front end. I would be interested to know if any of you have successfully added more rear sag and pushed the forks down far enough ( on an adventure bike ) to have sufficient trail to relax in the deep sand and rough stuff. When I was riding the 990 in Anza Borrego Desert State park, my understanding of suspension was very limited. I would drop that bike three times in three hours. Later with the 690, I experimented more with setup, but there were still limits in what could be done.

Once I rode a real dual sport bike in the sand there was no going back. The downside is no more riding out of the garage. I am OK with that.

  3. When I find myself on this type of road, the thought occurs to me, “Why am I here?” Is this a good workout? Is someone watching, that I can impress with my endurance? The answer that comes to me is that this road is a test of mental discipline and control of terror. There is another route nearby that is a much lower risk to body and equipment. Oriflamme road is like doing push-ups. How many can you do?  Then you ask yourself, Is that why I am out here?

Personally, I prefer a route that has a flow and allows the mind to take in the view, absorb the environment. Save the workout for the gym and track. And yes, I have ridden the O many times on everything from a 990, 690 to a 350. The sand at the bottom is much more fun than the rocks above.

  4. Yes, That is what the sign said leaving Ocotillo.  Figured, well heck I am this far,,,

There we’re about ten Sand Bars a couple of inches thick on the way to Border Patrol checkpoint. Also a couple of 1ft steps at the edge of the downstream side of pavement. Cal trans was wrapping up grading. They had pushed a lot of sand off.

So. Carrizo and Indian Canyon.  The clay was just drying, the sand totally dry. Most everywhere had been wiped clean, most hard pack, some already deep and loose.

This was totally in the park, on roads. On what had been roads. 75-89F at 11:00 when I loaded up.  Had to get away for a few hours,,,

  5. “ all purchased in the last 12 months “

Comments following offered in the best of humor,

Firstly, It matters what the quality of the mic and earphones.

    Second, the antenna for range

Third, I have found that it is important to have a face shield down to quiet the wind noise.

    Examples of Worth Wildness:

Six on a twisted, dusty route:

#5 gets a flat.  Six Immediate calls out “ mechanical”.

#6 Rips a Digger and hits hard.  Barely conscious calls out “Man Down”.

#7  If the conversation is tedious, change your group.

           😬

  6. Thanks Nick for the thoughtful discussion.  Reminds me of the days of a teenage tuner, when cost controlled every decision.  One of the luxuries of being old and over the horizon of a working career, is to use the best quality short of bling. Some of my friends love a deal no mater what their resources.  We all push the button that works for us. These bikes are a never ending puzzle that demands our attention.
