HH,
The best description I have read is:
Neduro, "When the bike bike goes away, it is much harder to bring back than a smaller bike."
i.e. starts to get away from your control.
-
HH,
That is funny, "two up in deep sand." Ha, ha.
I have quite enough trouble one up thank you.
-
Crawdaddy,
Head over to MotoWorld: They have a 690 and 950 Enduro and a 990 Adventure, little gas in tanks.
Role them out to an open space and lay them down three times each and...pick 'em up. Decide.
Think what you want to put up with out on the trail.
The 990 screen begins to be abusive after an hour or so; remove your helmet visor.
On the Street
The 990 works pretty well with TKC front and D908 rear. With street tires it kicks butt.
I have one bike. the 990 Adventure. It is a compromise everywhere, but I can go everywhere. For anyone other than an expert, it is tough climbing rock stairs or big steep whoops.
Be my guest to ride it if you like.

Capt,
I am working on a permission slip to join you camping. Here is hoping it comes through. I am looking forward to hear details of your Trans America Trip.

The Rock Obstacle and Randy's attack show just how deceiving pictures on the web can be. Despite Randy's comment about not carrying enough momentum, I'd bet the event was tougher than the photo appears to show. Looking closely, it appears there is a 90 degree vertical step at the start of the rock face and a small oak tree obstacle requiring a quick turn at the top. So you don't want to slam through at a high rate of speed, one to avoid mashing the front rim, and two to have a pace allowing the quick turn after you clear the rock. The long wheelbase and, did I mention weight, limit the ease with which one can lift the front on the "pig" to clear the step. To you 450 riders, this probably seems way too much analysis of the approach, but my limited experience teaches that planning and careful execution help save the day with the big bike. Personally, I only have so many "pick-ups" of the beast in me each day, therefore only so many mistakes allowed. So Randy approaches at moderate speed and bounces over the step, then tries to recover, maintain momentum and turn. I would give Randy a Silver Star for clearing on the second attempt and a Gold Star for taking the 950 on the trail in the first place. It is nice to have Randy showing the way on Godzilla. I just need to decide how crazy I am in following.
Thanks again to all on the ride for the warm welcome.

The Second Group,
What can I say but, "What a nice group of people." (It is OK, I won't let the secret out) Thanks for welcoming me and my Beast along for the ride.
You know, these rides are NOT as easy as they look online! Hard Duty today, but big fun. You folks are quite skilled. It is great to see it up close.

KTMrad,
See you @ 0715 in Rancho San Diego, Hwy 94 @ the turn.

KTMrad,
Yeah, that Deer Park area is not bad on a big bike.

hey Dave, just out of curiosity, have you considered getting another bike thats smaller for technical day trips?
Brad,
A wise man might make that choice, but that kind of leaves me out!
But really, when my ship comes in, that would be a fun concept. Until then, I will operate with a handycap. That EXC of yours looks like it can handle just about anything the desert can dish out. KTM has so many choices; 5 speed, 6 speed, close ratio, wide ratio 245lbs. That would be a cool 200lb weigh savings. If you were to get another KTM, which would it be?
Another option for me may be the 690 in one of it's future formats. 305lbs
Dave
PS, I know some of you love your Huskys

What is this man thinking; The Good, The Bad and the Ugly?
Mmm, This could be a Good workout; A Bad memory or an Ugly push up the balance of this hill.
PS, A good time had by all.

Brad,
Hey, a big thank you for posting the ride. Ken, Brad, Alex you were champs helping push the Bison up the the last 20ft of that whooped out top and for staying calm when the new guy shows with a monster bike.
A good day to play in the desert
A little shade a the Mud Cave in Arroyo Tapiado
Clayton, Zina and Brianna, pleasure to meet you and I hope to have spelled you names correctly.
You ladies are inspiring! It was great for me to see the KTM 450/505s? and the TE510 in action with such accomplished riders. I was reminded how Bone Headed I am riding the big 990 in places were it is not the appropriate tool. Great to do the Drop and make a good run at Diablo.

OK, looks like I will try for next week. I will take advange of the unexpectedly nice desert weather one last time. One inch of rain in the mountains the last two days.
Save a placemarker for Lost Valley for the next ride.
-
I meant to say Mud Hills, which you mentioned earlier. If I have a problem, I can dump out Fish Creek and head to Rodriquez. Doesn't matter to me, I just want to ride...In Warners or the Dez.
-
Carguy,
Are you there? What do you think? I am trying to decide whether to join Spaugh in the Dez or stick with my plan.(Because of the possible rain) I am happy to show up at Lost Valley and ride the route if you are in.
Talk to me.
-
supposed to rain tonight, be clear tomorrow, high temperature 80F low temp 60F. I guess everyone rather ride fire roads???
Nothing wrong with your route,
Your ride looks like a kick. I scheduled a ride Saturday out of Warners Spring, running north. Because of the rain prediction, I'm wavering on that. If it is raining in the morning, I will haul down to meet you at the Pinyon/S2 jct. I'm on a "big bike" but won't hold you up, "much". I may take a pass on the Mud Hills, but have done the rest of your route.

Explore??
What time?
Carguy,
You've probably seen the other post but for any others:
Depart from ample parking across the street from Lost Valley and Hwy79 0900
Saturday, May 24. Gas available in Warners Springs. Anyone else?

Craig,
Yes, the Google Map confirms this is the connection shown on Mapsource. The wash is as I saw it.
Thanks, Dave
I haven't been out the the camp in over 30 years. Do you suppose there is a gate along that main road these days, or do you think it would go through? Would love to take a look out there sometime.
Craig,
Re Gates: The Tom Harrison Map shows two locked gates going in and out of ABSP just north of the Scout Camp. At the easterm most boundary of ABSP, there was an open gate Wednesday (SDSU Research Center) I'd guess on Memorial Weekend all the gate will be open.
I have posted a ride over @ http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=344155
for Saturday. You are more than welcome to join me in exploring points north of Warners Springs. Could go as far as Toro Peak.

This is a point before the 4 mile post, 3.5- 3.75miles from the Chihuahua pavement.
Have fun out there. The weather was fabulous today. Unfortunately, I was in the truck.

Check out these pictures and tell me if this looks like the connection back from Lost Valley to the Boy Scout Road.
Thanks
PS, There was a gated road farther west, but it was posted no Motorized Vehicles.
TEST RIDE KTM 690
in What Bike to Ride
Posted
Schwinn,
Thanks for the report. Good to hear the enduro handles the desert surfaces well. A 690 is of interest to me if I thought it would be usable riding on the pavement for any length of time. I am really waiting for the Adventure version with some kind of road wind protection. Would you ever consider riding from Ramona to Mission Valley on the 690?
Enjoy the ride
