  1. DidDug,

Thanks for the "Adventurous" display of riding skill. Your crew sets a high standard. I have a question on hill climbing technique. On the video of you climbing the long hill, you seem to be picking your route very carefully as opposed to just carrying a lot of speed and plowing over obstacles. At the top you were not moving all that fast. You appear to to be driving around the obstacles. Is that your strategy?

    Dave, still learning

  2. "The 990 just not letting you take on as gnarly stuff as you'd like Bagstr? You take that things places where I never thought to see one "

    Jaynen

What can I say? I drank the kool aid and thought I could be Master of the Universe. The bike is killer on the pavement (with street tires), and reasonable two track. As my explorations in the Anza continue, the multiple pick ups put my back at risk. Plus, I would join in more SDAR Adventures with a smaller ride, which would cause less alarm when seen on the trail. Funny conversation out near Vista del Malpai, "Where did you come from, Alaska??" That about sums it up. Shock and Awe.

Schwinn has a good setup going, a good compromise. A little up on weight, no cooling issues, long maintenance intervals, 150lbs less than the 990.

  3. Crawdaddy,

Thanks for the update. Gaud, there seems to be a lot going on with that tank. As happy as I am to see a solution, a two gallon tank would have been more than enough! (five total) It looks like the tank would help protect the radiators. Maybe the stock plastic prettys it up some.

By the fall, one way or another, this will be the next ride. My mind is thinking of ways return the 990 to stock condition, pending a sale.

C/D, do you want to start a 690 Club? I know how you like the "Magic" button.

  4. Doug,

    Impressive.

"The trail kept climbing ridges, bashing over rocks, then dropping back into sand washes between the ridges. You ride up the steps, wishing for level ground, only to be greeted by more rocks on top of the ridge, then having to ride down dropoffs. About that time you're wanting flat terrain only to be greeted by DEEP, SOFT sand:"

OK, so other than 5MOH, would you ride any of the routes on the 950. I know the answer, but must ask. There is this mythology that a good rider can take the twin almost anywhere. Not being a mythological rider, I am hoping to move to a "much smaller" single by next riding season.

    Congratulations!

  5. Hi folks,

The Adventure Bike and I are headed down the Dez Saturday to enjoy the cool weather while it lasts. The plan is to do the big washes in a loop starting from the Valecito W trail head near Canebrake on S-2. Not withstanding the "Funny 800GS discussion elsewhere," my riding buddy Captcham and I have had great rides in the borrego. I'm thinking of: View of the Badlands W, Tapiado to Arroyo Seco del Diablo (I love that name) and Canyon Sin Nombre plus whatever. I just stay away from the ledges/steps on the Orange Monster. Julian Coffee and Tea is usually my first stop @ 0800 for their good brew as I trailer the bike down. Park and ride 0900/0930 S-2 & Vallecito Wash.

Some of you know, the majority of my chatter is over on Advrider, where fools do stupid things on over sized playthings. Most of that talk is from L.A. in this region, so many of them need to ride long distances on freeways to get to their riding opportunities. Which may explain why there is a lot of big bike action. I have benefited from the info here on SDAR, so I thought to post up and see what interest it would generate.

The Tom Harrison Map shows the road up Plum Canyon stops @ 2.2mi. The Hiking Only trail continues at what I estimate to be 8 miles to Blair Valley. A good hike.

Junction of Jasper Trail and California Riding and Hiking Trail.

That's the junction of Jasper and Grapevine - CA Riding and Hiking Trail is another name for OriFlame/Rodriguez as it comes up from Baner Grade

In this picture with my bike and the tower of rocks, there is a sign post behind my bike. Unless I read it wrong, it stated the CA Riding and Hiking Trail and it pointed in the northern direction.

Another question? Is it legal to ride on the CA Riding and Hiking Trail after it crosses the 78? From the map I have, it looks like it goes all the way to Blair Valley. It also looks like Plum Canyon (just east of this) terminates at the CA Riding and Hiking trail but I don't know if you are allowed to continue on. That is probably a great hike to Blair Valley.

  7. Interesting...What time where you standing taking photos on Font's Point? I was at the top of Rainbow Wash taking photos of people just to the west of Font's Point about 12:00.

That track up Borrego Mtn Wash would be tough. Or are we looking at the Texas Dip/San Felipe Wash to Borrego Spring Rd.?

Our group must have gone through the same area just a bit earlier.

  8. Anybody knows how far Rockhouse Trail go and if it is worth of checking?

    Alex,

Me thinks the trail goes about 11.5-12.0 miles. But you probably know that by now. Captcham and I were out there about 3 weeks ago and turned back at 11.0 miles just at the last left turn before the Hidden Spring Trailhead. At that point the two track was appearing and disappearing in and out of the wash.

We were out in the Borrego Badlands today but didn't see your group. Such a place, how could we miss you??

  9. Dirtdiver,

That screen name is quite apt.

My friend, I know where you are coming from. A year and a half ago, I started on the same quest. Each ride out, the bike would hit the deck a couple of times. I soon learned that the "picking up a big bike is easy with the correct technique", is crap. (Now I face the bike, grab the handlebar and pick it up from the squat position) RAD is right that time will do the trick. What he didn't include is, "If you survive." If you are coming off a street ride with little offroad experience, a big bike is a hell of a way to learn. Not realizing my error in choice of Adventure Offroading moto, I persevered. The SDAR gang are totally great at being inclusive and not batting an eye when you show up on a big ride. They will do everything possible to help you through. Learning two up!!! I would not recommend it. The people here are too polite to tell you, but you will be risking serious injury to your wife. If you are like me, you are willing to take your own risk. But your passenger?

You can get to the goal of Offroad Adventure on a big bike. I have been lucky to find a riding pal that is in tune an patient with my learning slope. Yesterday, we retraced a trip I made about 18 months ago with Papa and Dirt Dame up Rockhouse Canyon (North of Borrego). In '07 I dropped the bike about four times and was totally intimidated. I felt lucky to get out alive! Yesterday, we had a great ride, pushing in 11 miles from the pavement. Gravel, rocks and deep sand. High speed (45mph) sand washes and walking pace deep sand punctuated with 12" rocks. No drops and Big Fun.

My point is to be careful in your quest. It Will be tough, but you can do it. You and I are not the first to be captured by the idea of the big power offroad KTM. But like most, but a very few that read those glossy pages, the road is long and hard.

    Good luck my friend

  10. I'm running a tube in a tubeless TKC-80 on my 950 Adv and I think most people do... The only caution I've heard is that if you're going to do alot of high speed riding, avoid the heavy duty tubes as they heat up more and can cause failure..

    DD,

What would you consider to be "High speed"?

  11. Thanks to Kirk and Ben for getting me off the sofa Sunday. You are a couple of classy guys. Fun to see you two glide down the Rocky Rodriquez Canyon.

So, if the 690 is not the perfect Dual Sporter, maybe the ATK 605?

KTM Rad, Joliet, Spaugh, Crawdaddy: I suggest you hookup with Kirk (and Ben if he is still in town), as they have serious skills. Plus, they have good people skills.

Black Canyon, slip and slide; Rodriquez/Oriflamme, rock garden and Mason TT, top out. No photos as I was concentrating keeping the anchor (Orange Monster) weighed.
