    2012 500EXC

Spaugh - Yeah, I'm in the fondling phase of the relationship. The left / right inertia of the 350 in Intoxicating, vs the 690R. Just returned from Vey's Grand Opening where two 350EXCs came off the truck. If I wasn't worried about maintaining my relationship with the WW ( wonderful wife ) a transaction could have evolved. Looking to 2012 to move to the next level, probably the 350 just to do the Full Monty. 'Til then must suffer through with the 690. PS - I have it on good authority that men of a certain age start to loose their upper body strength. Taking this to heart, it would seem a lighter bike could extend the riding career of this group ( of a certain age). Covered in Lust

    New guy from Rancho Bernardo

Steve, Welcome Some of us have traveled to this site from ADVrider. You will find a separate philosophy. "Break off the plate." is apt.
  7. Yet another entertaining moment here @ SDAR. Much of our fascination with dualsport / offroading is that we are "Out There" riding by our whits, physically and mentally. Rocks, drops, sand wash to negotiate. Suspension, tires, gps etc. to manage. The largest decision of all, "What Bike to Ride." Operating under the illusion that there is one perfect cycle, we strive for perfection. New, old, 350, 990, 2 or 4 stroke, DOT, bling a blizzard of choices. Which provides us with the distraction from normal life we crave. Over the last two weeks, I have been around two broken bikes and two sets of broken bones. Living by our whits is tough! Props to Chris for sucking it up and taking responsibility, whether the fault is his or not. My advice...wait for it...Love the One You're With. Apologies to Buffalo Springfield.
  8. Chris, Just to add one more bit of info to discussion: What is the gearing on the moto; Where you @ 3/4 throttle or 100% at failure? That gas dump soo soon before failure is certainly suspect. Sure you didn't use brake fluid?
  9. OK, so it wasn't a loose spark plug. I was just hoping it was something easy. Not!
  10. Shock is on Suspender's work table for re-build. This bike is Almost maintenance free,, but not quite. Keep up the good work - Slacker.

    Greetings from a NOOB

Welcome, So, you've been around long enough to learn how to write well. See you at the trail head.
  14. While visiting GP today, they had a 350XC lined up next to a 690R. Tiny and his big brother! Later out at MotoWorld, they have a 500EXC. Both feet on the ground, at least front of. Surprised to see PDS rear on EXC and Link system on XC. On the 500 EXC, the rear subframe is of interest. Looks like a composite aluminum and non-metallic molded piece. Nice to grab on and pick the rear wheel up.
  15. Equipment inspections are becoming a frequent aspect of riding in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park. If you want to enjoy the 500 miles of two track out there in the 600K acre Park, know the rules. Recently, two riders in our group were asked to not ride inside the Park because of Non-DOT tires. We headed over toward Plaster City to remedy the situation. The Park Staff are focused on Plates, Mirrors and DOT Tires. In an effort to keep our organization in good standing, please be mindful and respectful of the fact that the ABDSP is one; a shared resource with other folks that appreciate the peaceful quite surroundings, and two a beautiful, fragile environment not to be degraded. This is not an Open Riding Area, which means that in order to protect the park we ride on the roads and Do Not cut trails. In the event that you get corrected for breaking Park rules, please do not go off on the staff. They have a responsibility to protect and serve. As we work with the staff we improve our image in the community and maintain access to a unique environment. As a sometimes ride leader, I try to remind everyone to Park as close to the roadway and off vegetation, ride legal equipment and avoid cutting roads. Bear with me as I state the obvious. I remain your humble servant. Feel free to PM questions you may have. Bagstr
  16. Personally, the performance difference between DOT and Offroad is unimportant. Greeting Park staff with a legal bike and legal attitude makes for a much more enjoyable day in the Dezert. Additionally, nice to not worry about folks in the group. If land managers want to monitor a public website and show up at the mapped trailhead, I enjoy chatting them up and sharing our shared love of Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Not productive to discuss out of specification issues here on the site.
  17. Well done. Love Edited video!

  19. Thus the Good Sam Award goes to Beta450. Thanks for giving the guy a second chance, whether he wanted it or not. In our initial conversation I offered to have the group push him out. They were more interested in finding their friends supposedly camped nearby. ( By walking across the open desert ) Have you ever seen more conflicted decision makers? I loved Kug's comment,"Whatever you do, you have five minutes to decide." Still hard to believe he dropped into that sand hole with a two wheel drive Explorer. Possibly, the thought of seven Off-roaders laying hands on his rig put him off.

    My new Motovan

Pasta, Looks Good. May I suggest, just to finish the thing, a 40" Flat Screen hanging in front of the refer. With a sound system of course. Riders could enjoy after hours image review.
