  1. Escaped the heat for a four day ride through the Northern Mountains of Utah. I know there are a lot of pics of southern Utah, but have not seen to many of northern so I thought Id share these. In total we traveled just over 600miles - about 90% dirt roads - mostly nice condition roads with a few atv trails thrown in. We headed up past Mirror Lake then cut through the mountains to Flamming Gorge and down through Red Cloud Loop to Current Creek and into Heber.

    whats your line of work?

Right now: Student, Masters of Architecture at Newschool of Architecture and Design. Looking for work. History: Grew up in Utah. Just a little over a year ago I sold everything I owned, dragged my wife and three little girls to San Diego to pursue the degree. Blessedly they have adjusted well and love San Diego. Ridding History: six years ago a neighbor sold me his wr426 and took me down to the San Rafael Swell in the Utah deserts for my first ever motorcycle ride. He and others proceeded to baptise me by fire by leading me through a series of amazing trails, including Five Miles of Hell. The bike took quite a beating as It shot out from under me many times and I watched as bounced into trees and rocks. It made it home no worse for ware, I however, geared with only helmet, leather work gloves, and hightop tennis shoes, returned home looking like the walking dead with countless scrapes and bruises and two blown knees. Regardless of the wifes protest I was hooked on dirt biking from that point on. Because school takes up most of my time (and money), I sold my dirt bike (06 TC510) and bought an 08KLR which I commute to school daily on and try to visit the trails as much as possible.

    Microsoft Live Maps

I was looking around for some good trails with live maps and I downloaded the beta 3d version and found it extremely fun to play around with. You can zoom right down to trail level in 3D and follow an entire trail. I know google earth is popular and this is probably old news to most of you, but if you havent checked out this technology and you have some time, check it out. Here is a link if your interested... http://maps.live.com/ I am looking for a fun, mostly dirt road, path from Poway to Joshua Tree Ntl Park for Thanks Giving Weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun) if anyones got suggestions. Here are some clips of fish creek wash from Live Earth.
  6. Cancled for thanksgiving weekend - family plans have prevailed I would like to check out Joshua tree some other time however... stay tuned
  7. Headed out to do the Ramona Loop but ran into one closed road after another - gave up and went home. Still enjoyed the ride however Gotta love coming up to these signs! At the start of Santa Ysable Truck Trail, this Gate was locked - not sure of motorcycle protocal, so I scanned the gps for alternate routes and it looked like the Mesa Grande Truck trail would get me over the hide out and on my way, so.... and then... just after some old cabin sites couldnt figure out another way over so I'll have to hit the upper part of the loop some other time.
  8. Going to take a ride up through ramona around 10am and explore as much of Bagstr's Ramona loop as time allows. I'll be stoping for gas in Ramona if anyone is interested in joining me there.

  12. I was all geared up for a 3-day trip around the Grand Canyon with a friend from Utah, but he had to cancel at the last minute - so I grabbed a map and decided to check out a couple of the trails I've heard you all talk about. I left Sabre Springs around 1:00 and headed down the I-15 (had to make a stop in clairmont) to the 8 and out toward Pine Valley, at the top of Pine Valley I headed down S1 to Mason Valley, but that and all other trails I could find cutting over to the S2 were closed for recovery, so I took the 78 around to the Pinyon Mountain Road. I made camp at the top of Pinyon Mountain Road and headed out through Pinyon Drop Off then Split Rock and out through fish Creek Wash. I had planned to check out some of the trails north of the 78 in the desert but fish creek wash and the high winds on the 78 really took it out of me. At one point on the 78 I hit a micro burst wind that damn near pulled me off my bike, it seriously felt like someone grabbed a hold of my visor and yanked me backwards, I almost lost it! my Knees were week for a good hour after that. Everything I had acquired for the trip from the Tech2 boots to the Lowrance XOG gps to the Bike Accessories from SW-Motech worked awesome and I'll post a write up under their respective catogories for those who are interested. The one thing I know that would have made the dirt roads a lot funner is an upgradded suspension - I'll have to research that one. Here are some pics along the trail... Start of the Alpine Valley Trail - I was hoping the bike was going to look this good at the end... Top of Alpine Valley Trail Pinyon Mountain Road Camp at the top of the Pinyon Mountains MMMmmm... peach cobler in a bag One of three places I decided to drop the cases before attempting two.. a little late three - pinyon drop off Pinyon drop off looking up. Its a lot worse looking in person, thats slick rock coated with loose gravel, made for slick trip down, I was hoping that I wasnt going to need to come back this way parts of the trails like these that would have just been fun on the Husky proved to be challenging on a fully loaded KLR end of Pinyon Mountain Road and the begining of Fish Creek Wash near the end of Fish Creek Wash - Wash is an understatment - this was miles of loose deep dirt. Total trip 217miles
