  1. I just got back to the forum after a brief several-month hiatus dealing with other stuff. I want to go Terribly bad, but already tentatively committed to a trip with my non-plated buddy. Has anyone looked into offroad-only routes? I haven't screened the tracks yet. On another note, I'm hopefully going to be a late entry to this event either way and if anyone has some extra room in their group I'd like to tag along. I come packaged with a radio I don't know how to use (licensed though), a GPS that works most of the time, a keen sense of direction for use when the GPS craps out, and my own tubes, tools, etc. My preferred riding style is to go fast (relatively speaking) but stop often to look at stuff and recover from crashes. That said, I know beggars can't choose what gift is in the horse's mouth so I'll play nice with whoever will take me in. I'll probably be stealth "RV-camping" inside my camper shell in the parking lot so I can provide limited fire watch out there if necessary. I'd be willing to pay someone for shower privileges though. IF I can make it.

    Radios and bike-to-bike com systems

I finally took and passed the test too. I did fine on element 2 so without studying I went ahead and tried element 3, at the VEs' suggestion...failed miserably. I was kinda pissed that I didn't pass the first time so I went back yesterday and passed element 3. So I guess that's just one more drop in the bucket of proof that even a moron can pass these tests and be legal. SDLineman, thanks for the offer of your book...I'm sure it would have helped me a bit with the studying.

Great deal on a TomTom GPS

Dang it, too late. I was looking for a TomTom, too. Good heads-up, Strega

Does anyone have study materials that I could borrow? I've got my VX-170 with CT-91, and helmet kit is on order. I'm determined to get legal before I transmit, and I've been looking at the question bank for a couple weeks now. I know I can memorize 400 questions eventually but I'm not really looking forward to that approach.

    Air Filters

No complaints with the Uni on my XR650L. I just wash and oil it every once in awhile and it sits in there and leaves me alone. I can't say I noticed any difference in performance when I switched over, but I did notice that whenever the bike sits for awhile there is a little bit of filter oil leaking out of the airbox. I just don't park it on the bedroom carpet anymore. Hope this helps.

    Lost Garmin GPS

Ya, but so do I, so I know it's actually really easy. A lot of times, I take off then just set the cruise control and catch up on sleep. There's probably some sort of warning or buzzer or something if anything bad were to happen. Actually most airplanes have Hansel and Gretel functions too so he's just going with what he knows. Pastapilot, don't listen to these naysayers. I support you.

    Lost Garmin GPS

You can have my old eTrex Vista for free if you want. I was having problems with it and after sending it back to Garmin for replacement twice I upgraded to a 60Cx which is awesome. The only issue with the 60Cx is it falls off it's Ram mount about every time I wipe out...but I digress. Anyway, I think the only issue with the Vista is that it occasionally (rarely) turns itself off. It may have been because I was canoeing with it in the rain for 2 weeks and moisture somehow got inside, or it may be a faulty unit. I've moved on so if you or anyone else wants to play with it then let me know. I also have cables for it, etc but it sounds like you're good in that department already. Oh, I almost forgot the most important part...screen is not color but the case is silver so it goes with everything.

    Slide

It seems legit - I'd try it.
  9. Yeah...it's true...I don't think I even turned at all. Pretty much just rode straight into that giant, very sturdy fence. What can I say...I never claimed I was a good rider... But more importantly, what is that fence's purpose?? I might not have been seeing straight at the time, but I don't recall seeing any cattle or whatever being contained by it. Somebody just decided to put a big, painful fence right where I was trying to ride. Have it removed, please. Seriously though, it was a great ride. HUGE thanks to Bikeslut, because as far as I can tell he drove all the way out there just to help me do a tire change at 6am. I definitely used up all his soapy water, and probably most of his patience too.
  10. I take it back...I'd like to come out, but it looks like I'll have to catch you guys next time. Have fun!
  11. I'll ride if I can roll my butt outta bed early enough to make it up there.

    XR650L Overheating Issue

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the advice. Especially yours, FakeName. After reading your posts, I'm not so worried about doing anything too drastic right away, but I'll search around and see what I can find on the cheap. I know that the engines are designed to operate without oil coolers, etc. but having worked on large slow-speed diesels and various other things in the past I know how significant the effects of harsh environmental conditions can be on the useful life of mechanical equipment. And most of all, modifying things is fun (even though sometimes it feels like I take 2 steps back for every step forward).

    yeah, I know it's hot

I'm in. Yeah...I'm also the tard that can't change his own tires.

    XR650L Overheating Issue

Haha, excellent point. Sometimes I get wrapped up in projects a little too much. I'll try pulling the clip, too. Thanks. I can't remember the oil I'm running exactly. I think it's TTR 4-stroke synthetic something. I started using it at Chief Gunner's suggestion, so whatever he runs (not that that helps necessarily). I think it's a pretty high-quality oil. Really? That's definitely reassuring to hear. It seemed awfully high to me, but I guess with only 1500 miles between oil changes anyway, maybe you're right. I don't hear any tinks (from my bike, anyway. I know what you mean though). I also don't ever notice any power loss, which was a telltale sign on an old truck I used to have. That thing ate itself alive though. Anyway, thanks for the tips, guys. Guess I'll hold off on the oil cooler and see what happens.
